2011 version - bottle 366. This is my Christmas eve beer shared with family. Thick 22 ounce red waxed bottle pours a light black with a frothy off white head. I am immediately decked with wafting aromas of GOOD bourbon. Further investigation yields a light fruit note - cherries. The major drawback of most of the Eclipse variants is the thin mouthfeel of the base beer but the barrel really shines in this one. Flavors of burnt wood, vanilla, brown sugar and caramel. This is a superb, albeit pricey, beer.

22oz bottle, bottle 1385/2011. Pours dark brown / black with a bit creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is oaty chocolate malts with some dark fruit, black licorice and light bourbon. There's some alcohol as well. It's a bit more subdued than expected.
The flavor is sweet sugary (honey?) chocolate malts and dark fruits and some grain that leads to a bitter warming alcohol finish. The mouthfeel is full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, some harsh boozy bitterness early on, but it mellows and becomes pretty well balanced. As it warms up all the way, it becomes a bit boozy again. -

Imperial Eclipse Stout (2010 Four Roses Single Barrel version) Tasted at the 5th Annual Bistro Barrel Aged Beer Fest on 11/13/2010. This Imperial Stout pours a deep black color from the tap. Small to medium sized tan foamy head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and dark fruit, with lots of bourbon and wood. A full bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are chocolate and coffee, with touch of dark fruit, a hint of vanilla and a very nice warm and smooth bourbon flavor. The hops are earthy. Very smooth and rich tasting Imperial Stout. A lot of wood and bourbon flavor without being overly boozy. There is a hint of alcohol at the finish. Very nice beer. A very good example of just how good barrel aging can be in a beer.

Better than the Evan Williams in 2010 - still a stretch for the price, though. We split a bottle in SF. This was a sweet, bourbony beer that highlighted the dark chocolate aspects of the beer and a touch of vanilla from the wood. delicious.
