Three times the malt bill and five times the hops of a normal strength beer, this Barleywine tests the limits of our brewhouse and our backs! But the real struggle is in getting this massive brew to completely ferment, a true test of our skill and the vigor of our yeast. Consisting of 98% Pale Malt (with a bag of CaraMunch thrown in for color) and just one hop variety, Columbus, this beer showcases these two basic ingredients in their most concentrated state. Enjoy this very special beer young, but save a few bottles for future winters. Enjoy not too cold, say about 13C! Barleywine will age indefinitely, like wine; thus the name. Food Pairings: Rouquefort, Gorgonzola, and washed-rind cheeses like Oka or Port de Salut. Dried fruits, and sweet nuts such as Brazils.

RBAG 2012. First beer of the night, I guess we’re starting off small........ Light clear browny amber complete with a good tan crown. Wood, rubbing alcohol, some sweet cherry and orange zest all show up in the nose. Strong bitter wood in the taste, mild pine, sweet fruits, something bordering on floral but not really. Taste is very medical and not really winning me over but still a good brew.

From ichorm!!! By far the best showing I have experienced from Driftwood to this point. NOT deep and thick and syrupy and even oily like barleywine can be, this is more lively than the average BW, lighter in body as well. Colour is dark brown, but translucent, skiff of head but not tons. Retained in small colonies around the sides of the glass till about halfway down. Taste seemed to hint at cherry, perfume, only the faintest hint of anise (in a perfumey kind of way), malts are supple, the beer is alcoholic but seems to avoid being hot. Rich, like a brandy chocolate is the feeling I get in my mouth at times, definate fruit associations at times, but not the raisin... well ok maybe raisin, but not as dark and thick as one would normally experience. Very wet tasting, even watery (not in lack of flavour or body, but just that same clean sensation of good water). Very nice. I will finish with just a hint of plum....

Watching my sister try this was quite entertaining. She quickly reverted to a three year old who just put something gross in her mouth. Admittedly, she's a wine drinker. Oh yeah, review... a hoppy sweetness, malty, perfumey ~~~ maybe it's my glass, but no head, or lacing. Great barleywine, great colour. I can't even imagine the grain bill, nor can you imagine how long this has taken to be written. Trying to review this while watching hockey and doing beernog shooters is a challenge. 'Tis the season...

From Libations. Poured a clear and dark amber beneath a foamy, tan head. Aroma was gentle, perhaps some malt and a healthy amount of alcohol, too. Taste was delicious, malt and the high ABV. Mouthfeel was thick and rich, with a strong finish. Great stuff.
