California Common’ beer is a hybrid style of beer brewed with lager yeast but at ale fermentation temperatures. This truly American beer style was first developed during the California Gold Rush when cold fermentation for lager yeast was not readily available due to lack of refrigeration, resulting in a highly effervescent beer. It is amber in color and medium bodied with a noticeable degree of caramel-type malt character in flavor and in aroma. Hop bitterness impression is medium-high and is balanced with a medium-low degree of fruity esters, hop flavor and aroma and malt character to give an impression of balance and easy drinkability.
