The Auld Allance was an alliance forged between Scotland and France, lasting from 1295 until 1560 when the Treaty of Edinburgh was enacted. And it’s also the namesake of an ale that was collaborated on by two of Tampa Bay’s elite breweries. Cigar City Auld Alliance (Cigar City Brewing; Tampa, FL; Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy; ABV: 8.5) is a limited edition collaboration between the Tampa brewery and Dunedin Brewery. Described as a Biere de Scotch Ale, it has the characteristics of a wee heavy and biere de garde. Auld Alliance pours a deep chestnut brown color, with notes of sweet caramel and roasted malt typical of a Scotch Ale complimented by notes of sour fruit and grassy hops characteristic of a farmhouse ale. Very smooth and well balanced from start to finish, Auld Alliance also has a hint of nuttiness and spices in the backbone, making this ale as intriguing as it is enjoyable.

Rated in 2011. Pours amber with copper hues and tan head. The aroma is big fruitiness from prunes and dates and raisins and then a peppery note. The taste is similar with prunes, raisins and dates but adds a more fruity like plum juice and cranberry juice note. Nice stuff with pleasing fruitiness that doesn’t get too sweet or two odd. Dunedin? They still make beer?

June '13. Big, interesting brew. Reddish brown, big aroma and flavor of dark fruit, brown sugar, light somoke and alcohol. There is a faint tartness to the flavor that is different than the lemony astringency sometimes present in scotch ales. Bready notes on the finish as well. Lots going on in this one. Hard to get out here in the west, but i hope to try again.

Liked this one better than the Big Sound. Didn't seem as thick, alchohol masked more, and flavor/balance just worked better for me. Appearance is medium brown, decent off-white head with good lacing. Premium beer that is worth the try. This collaboration with Dunedin Brewery is limited, so grab it if you can instead of the Big Sound Scotch (which is a lot more readily available).
