A beer style made famous because of Catherine the Great’s visit to England where she enjoyed the local stouts. She had batches of stout shipped to the palace in St. Petersburg, but in the long voyage the beer spoiled. Catherine was not amused! So some industrious British brewers made a super stout with a high alcohol level and lots of hops (a natural preservative) and lo and behold… Imperial Stout!
