The appearance is a murky brown color with white head. Aroma is nutty with some peat and caramel. Flavor is malty with some caramel and toffee. Some alcohol shows through in the finish. Overall this is a nice beer.

Aromas of vanilla, oak, sweet malts, and alcohol, body is slightly murky brown/ amber color, the head is thin and fizzy. Flavors are centered on the dry woodiness, vanilla hints and some burbon on the back end. Not very exciting, and I had high hopes for this one, but... eh.

It pours a dark-brown and burnt-orange with a thick light-tan head and copious lacing. A peppery aroma including caramel malts, hops, citrus, bread, and mildly spicy. The mouthfeel is thin and watery. Flavors of caramel malts, hops, citrus, bitterness, bread, and spiciness. Flavorful, but the mouthfeel is poor.

Had a sudden, sweet, sharp alcohol aroma on the pour. Not much foam. Dark ruby-brown color. Caramel flavor, grainy, with some yeast-like flavors. Apple and banana. Body is rough and fizzy. Complex flavors, but I didn't particularly care for this beer. I don't understand the high reviews compared to what I'm drinking.

Comes out of the tap a nearly opaque chocolaty brown with a minimal light tan head. Malty, woody aroma has a hint of caramel. Rich, malty flavor has woody, yeasty and caramel tones as well as a hint of horehound. Texture is fizzy, edgy and tingly.

Sampled on 3/19/2011. This scotch ale pours a slightly hazy dark amber brown color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet. A medium bodied scotch ale. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Nice carbonation. Nicely balanced. Touch of peat at the finish. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

From Pt Roberts (WA) Marketplace. Poured the darkest yet still clear amber beneath a creamy tan cap. There was a faint scent of malt, and nothing more. Mouthfeel was smooth and creamy, perhaps the best thing about this beer. Taste was lackiong, really, mostly malt, although it did improve towards the end. There could've been a hint or the bourbon. Or not. Pretty average scotch ale, and not inexpensive, either.

you get the feeling this was a textbook scotch ale before the barreling. no frills, but spot om for the style, and tasty if you like peet. the barreling softens things up just a little (still less than 7%) and gives it an extra layer of sweetness, vanilla, and oak, but the smokiness still is the key player in the aroma and flavor. a nice ale.
