Situated at opposite ends of the California Trail, pioneering breweries Sierra Nevada and Boulevard have embarked upon a journey into the unknown, to a land where adventures in brewing and flavor await. Terra Incognita is, fittingly, an earthy beer, celebrating the unique terroir of the two locations. Beginning with Sierra Nevada’s estate-grown pale malt, and combined with amber malt, wheat, and malted wheat, it is then assertively hopped with Bravo and Styrian Goldings, dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings, and finally barrel aged with Brettanomyces in Missouri oak. Originally brewed for and released exclusively at SAVOR Fest 2012. Re-released to the general public on 6-18-13.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Pours dark brown with a great light tan head that faded into a lasting film. Mellow nose overall with notes of citrus hops. Pretty light overall. Flavor is full of dark fruits, red fruits, and mild citrus in the finish. Lightly sour but mellow overall. Carbonation is fluffy, body is medium, and the mouthfeel is fairly smooth. Overall I enjoyed this but it wasn’t that memorable.

750 ml corked & caged bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 8.5%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black, with a huge beige head. Aroma of red wine vinegar, brettanomyces and oak. The flavour is not vinegary, but very oaky and moderately spicy, with a warming mouthfeel.

Dark berry fruitiness, oak, whiskey, funk all in equal measure. This rather dark ale is both mellow and incredibly complex at the same time. lively carbonation. Another that exceeded expectations. Love the whiskey/sour combo with a malty fruitiness that just brings it all together. Could have easily drank the entire 750 myself (though I did not).

Pours an dark, black-amber color with a large off-white head that takes quite a long time to go down. Scent is packed with Brett-like funkiness up front. Tart, earthy aromas, chocolate and hops are noticeable.Taste is tart up front with brett-like flavors that immediately turn to boozy whiskey notes. strange blend between a very funky saison and a barrel aged stout/porter. Funky yeast and slightly tart flavors with peppery spice and dark chocolate. Some oak flavor with boozy whiskey, especially as it warms, finishes with a spiciness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, very fizzy, and well carbonated. Overall i liked it.

Be careful if you open a 750 ml bomber - the one I got popped and fizzed like a bottle of New Year’s champagne. When it settles down, it pours an opaque coffee brown with a thick light tan head. Aroma is not particularly strong, but it does have malty and fruity notes. Flavor, fortunately, delivers more than the aroma promises, yielding roast malt and sour fruit notes along with subtle wheat and hops hints. Sourness is not overpowering - I have had sour beers that caused my face to do gymnastics, and this ain’t one of them. Smooth texture is not too fizzy, but it leaves a nice malty and fruity finish that is just sour enough to please.
