Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

2016 Edition, in a bomber from Total Wine (Scottsdale, AZ). Wax dipped bottle; these are always such a challenge (for me) to uncap. Clear amber pour, creamy ivory head. Malty aroma, with boozy undertones. Solid mouthfeel. Caramel flavour, along with dark fruit and alcohol. Nicely balanced and not too sweet. A pleasing effort. Hardly the ideal beer for a 28 degree C July day, but what you going to do, with no IPA in the house?

Pours out clean clear copper color with medium tan head. The aroma is pretty mild and smells like sweet alchol. The mouthfeel is solid but not what I call thick. The taste mild, clean, and not as sweet as most Barleywine. Taste does improve when the bottom sediment it shaken and poured out.

Hearty aroma has robust notes of brown sugar, roast malt and spices (cloves & cinnamon). Comes out of the bottle (Was that bloomin’ wax really necessary? Makes it a pain in the arse to open!) a clear chestnut with a nice dirty wheat head that is not thick but hangs around. Flavor is - WHOA NELLIE! A powerful alcohol bite like the chomp of an angry pit bull, with brown sugar, nutty, caramel and malty notes and a hint of clove. Smooth texture has plenty of fizz, if not the firmest body. A killer penguin indeed!

2011 edition with a year in the cellar. Clear amber pour with a decent sized head. Some fruitiness, a bit of spice, candy sugar and faint alcohol in aroma and taste. Other reviewers have said this is a simple beer and I guess I agree but it is still an excellent sipper that leaves you feeling pretty warm and fuzzy after 22 ounces.

Pours a murky brown, good foam .. . raisins, cherry skins, and peppered caramel steaks .. . easy to drink but down to its simplicity .. . pretty good .. . Why must you people insist I learn your names?

This poured a copper color with a white head. The aroma contains some kind of berries, citrus, caramel, and cherries. The flavor is rather sweet with some oak, vanilla, cherries, and alcohol. Overall this was a pretty good barleywine.

A deep amber colored beer. A small frothy textured off white head rises above. Settles fairly quickly into a thin soapy ringlet. Sweet, alcoholic nose. Sweet, fruity taste with a warming on the palate. A good medium bodied, smooth beer. Just not as intense as better Barleywines.

this stolen from kinger's review (which is spot on) "Sweet caramel and nutty malt aromas followed up by more of a candy sweetness, fairly one dimensional. Smooth and medium to lighter in body for the style, damn drinkable. Malt forward flavor of caramel, toffee, mild nuts and a residual sweetness. Seemed more akin to a Strong Ale in it's simplicity." definitely a one dimensional barleywine...just a touch of hops and candy fruit sweetness, but for me, it worked. very very drinkable for a 10% beer. nice sipper, nothing more or less.2012 a little hot.

Amber/brown body with a small, lasting head and tiny spots of lacing all around. Sweet caramel and nutty malt aromas followed up by more of a candy sweetness, fairly one dimensional. Smooth and medium to lighter in body for the style, damn drinkable. Malt forward flavor of caramel, toffee, mild nuts and a residual sweetness. Seemed more akin to a Strong Ale in it's simplicity.

Poured a clear amber color with good head that didn’t last. Aroma was of pine hops and caramel. Flavor was much the same but weaker then the aroma. Unbalanced for sure. Nice try.
