The French are mostly known for their wine but northern France, along the border with Belgium, is barley and beer country. Boscos Biere de Garde is a farmhouse style ale traditionally brewed in Nord Pas-de-Calais. Garde is from the French “garder”, meaning to keep or store. These beers were brewed strong in the winter and spring then stored for consumption in the summer. The beer’s crisp, refreshing and flavorful character, complimented by its strength, was essential to sustaining the farm hands during a hard day’s work in the barley fields.
