This series celebrates the deliciousness of a bold, chewy stout that’s more than a little bit extra. Black Liquids are rich and chocolatey, with a toasty malt backbone and a generous dose of dessert-esque adjuncts. It’s essentially the beer version of saying “yes” to whipped cream on that hot chocolate. Volume 9: The latest volume in the Black Liquids series brings together the classic yet sophisticated combination of chocolate and oranges. The base beer received a generous dose of toasted cocoa nibs and was further conditioned on a big ol’ heap of orange peels — extracting the essence of the orange without the acidity in the name of keeping everything silky smooth. Does Black Liquids Vol. 9 bring forward fond memories of munching on a Terry's Chocolate Orange? Definitely. Did we melt several Terry’s Chocolate Oranges together in a pot in order to conduct a side-by-side taste comparison? Maybe later.

Tall can from the brewery. Pours a massive frothy, creamy looking brown head with some thick dirty soapy lacing and has a pitch black appearance, no highlights. Lively carbonation. Aromas of orange peel, chocolate, roasted malts, hints of coffee, barley malt, a bit nutty. Flavours of oranges mixed in with some chocolate, lots of barley malt, oats, some nutty notes, yeast, hints of vanilla. Slick and slightly oily mouthfeel. Lots of sweetness on the palate but doesn't overstay its welcome, not overly rich and heavy for 10%abv stout. Good stuff!
