A bottle-conditioned wheat wine, Ashnan displays great depth of character and complexity. It features bold tannic notes that integrate very well with the tropical fruit flavours. Aging in white wine barrels contributes wood and wine character to the noticeable alcohol presence, and enhances a dry finish. A beer with a wine-imposed identity crisis, Ashnan sits comfortably between, offering the best qualities of both. Ashnan was the Mesopotamian goddess of grain, an apt symbol for this barrel-aged wheat wine.

Batch 3074 packaged 2014/02/13. Pours a clean golden-amber colour with a small creamy-foam white head, disappearing quickly enough, but leaving creamy lace. Winy aromas with some sweet grapes, yeast and nutty notes. The taste has the same grapes-raisins combination, so sweet enough, but the malt finishes with a smokiness to it. Nice and bready overall with the fruits coming from the Chardonnay barrels and hints of sourness. Full bodied and smooth, with the alcohol well-hidden. A good wheat wine with the added touch of the wine barrel.

Pours a huge foamy bubbly off-white head and has a clear pale golden appearance. Aromas of wheats and earthy hops. Flavours of oranges, citrusy hops, slight sourness, a bit tarty as well. The alcohol is fairly well hidden. Not too bad, but a tad disappointing.

The beer pours a translucent golden-orange colour with a thin light tan coloured cap. The aroma is light wheat notes, grains, and spices, but nothing overpowering or even distinct. The mouthfeelk is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is grainy malt with weak hop notes. Certainly not a beer I would try again.
