Aroma of brown malts, roasted nuts, caramel, tonka beans and vanilla. The flavour is not as sweet as I feared, the sweetness is fairly well balanced. 1929 | Salikatt Cardinal's Brown Ale | Norway | Brown Ale | 4.0
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 On tap at Cardinal. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Pleasant aroma and flavour of moderately roasted malts, roasted nuts, dark chocolate and mild coffee, and enough bittering hops to make the beer very moreish. This is more of a porter than a brown ale in my book, but I don't mind, as I love porters. |

1933 | Beer Here Kama Citra | Denmark | Brown Ale | 4.3
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9 At Copenhagen Beer Festival. Brown colour. Lovely aroma and flavour of brown and lightly roasted malts, caramel, rye bread and a little chocolate, mixed with distinct fruity (apricot, melon, citrus) hops. I was sceptical how well Citra hops would fit in a brown ale, but Beer Here have succeeded. Good stuff! |

1937 | Mack Brown Ale | Norway | Brown Ale | 3.2
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 6.0%. Brown colour, huge off-white head, some sediment in the bottle. Fruity and sourish aroma with farmhouse notes, nearly gueuze-like, quite pleasant. The flavour is fruity and slightly sourish, possibly infected, but the beer is still not ruined for me. Distinct bitterness in the finish. Not your usual brown ale, but drinkable. |

1938 | Lervig Betty Brown | Norway | Brown Ale | 3.9
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 Shared bottles at the release, Lervig’s tent at Gladmatfestivalen, Stavanger. Dark brown colour, creamy beige head. Moderate aroma, notes of malts and chocolate. The flavour has strong notes of chocolate malts, also hints of caramel and nuts, but is never too sweet. Balanced by distinct notes of NZ Pacific Gem hops, which, with their blackberry-like character, is an interesting choice for a brown ale. As Betty Brown is very flavourful and has a decent mouthfeel, you’d easily believe it was stronger than it actually is. This is definitely a beer I’ll buy frequently. In Norway, only Nøgne Ø Brown Ale can compete. |

1939 | Mo Eventyrøl Mørk | Norway | Brown Ale | 3.3
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6 Sample on tap at Gladmatfestivalen 2011. I spoke to Bjørn Moe, and he confirmed that his two Eventyrøl varieties were NOT identical with Glad Laks and Mørk Suldøl - but as I was in a bit of a hurry, I forgot to ask if they were bottom fermented or top fermented. My guess is that they are both top fermented, which would imply that brown ale is the nearest style for Eventyrøl Mørk. Amber to copper colour, low off-white head. Moderate aroma, notes of brown bread, hints of caramel and toffee. Fairly decent flavour, some caramel and noticeable hops. |

1940 | Berentsens Skumrings Ale | Norway | Brown Ale | 3.3
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7 On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. A very dark brown ale with an off-white head. Aroma of lightly roasted malts and burnt caramel. Same elements in the flavour, but the beer is not sweet (I think I’d like a little more sweetness).. The hops are moderate, as in most brown ales. Clearly related to Rav Amber Ale from the same brewery, but darker, roastier and far less hoppy. |

1941 | Storm Bronze Ale (Red Dawn) | Indonesia | Brown Ale | 3.2
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 330 ml bottle, in Bali, as Storm (Beer) Bronze Ale. ABV is 5%. I bought two bottles with slightly different labels and barcodes, but it was said to be the same beer, the brewery is just in the process of changing labels. Bronze colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma, some malts and caramel, a hint of spruce. Medium dry flavour, light bodied, a hint of caramel, some bitterness in the finish. Not impressive. |

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 Cask half pint at the Dick Whittington, Gloucester. Brown colour, small beige head. Moderate malty aroma. Lovely sweet and malty flavour, with some caramel and a hint of roast malts and nuts, but also a nice fruitiness which makes the beer very drinkable. One of the best English brown ales I’ve had in a long time. |

1948 | Braunstein Næsgaarden Økologisk Brown Ale | Denmark | Brown Ale | 2.6
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4 500 ml bottle, bought at Superbrugsen, Skødstrup. The dusty bottles on the shelf testified that this was not the store’s most popular beer. Sampled 06.07.10, bought just a couple days earlier - "best before"-date was 14.06.10. Organic beer, ABV is 6%. Dark brown colour, hazy. Moderate off-white to beige head. Nice aroma of fruity hops, also notes of caramel and nuts. The flavour was fruity and acidic, nearly lemony. Definitely past its prime. |
