1852 | Christoffel Blond | Netherlands | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.9
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 (330 ml fliptop bottle, bought in Denmark). Hazy pale golden colour, moderate head, leaves some lacing. Aroma is yeasty like a blond ale and flowery (Saaz?) like a Bohemian pilsener. Flavour and aftertaste have a distinct hoppy bitterness, notes of pine needles, eucalyptus and grapefruit. Very nice. One small bottle is not enough! |

1853 | Veltins Pilsener | Germany | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.1
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 Rerate 500 ml can, May 2024, from Vinmonopolet Sauda. ABV is 4.8%. Pale golden colour, large to moderate white head. Fresh aroma of pilsener malts and herbal hops, a hint of citrus. Soft and slightly citric mouthfeel. Herbal hops in the flavour. Not bad. Rerate 2002: The bitterness of this pilsener (from a can) is more pronounced than I remembered it from draught. I'm taking off 1 point. Still, it's an acceptable beer. |

1854 | Budweiser Budvarceske (Czechvar) | Czech Republic | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 2.9
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 Rerate: 500 ml bottle, airborne from Praha/Prague, 5.0% ABV. Golden colour, large head disappears instantly, no lacing, bubbly. Some Saaz aroma, but not nearly as good as Starobrno or Staropramen. Flavour is rather malty for a pilsener, reasonable bitterness. Drinkable, but not my favourite pils. Original rating: I had this beer from a can in Norway, 4.5% ABV. The expiry date was 6 days ago, i.e. the production date was 1 year earlier, and the beer had not been stored cool at my retailer's. This must have impaired the quality, exactly how much I can't tell. A couple other raters had the same impression of the beer as I had, and they probably had a fresher can/bottle. Disappointment is the word, |

1855 | Emersons Organic Pilsner | New Zealand | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 4.4
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8 (500 ml bottle). Nearly gushes out of the bottle, pours with an enormous long lasting fluffy head. Colour is hazy golden. Pleasant hoppy aroma, heather, herbal, hints of cedarwood. Initially some notes of dirty socks too, notes which fortunately soon disappears in the glass. Lovely crisp hoppy flavour on a subtle malty background, hop character reminiscent of a very good golden ale. This is not a sweet beer, but the little sweetness there is reminds me of heather honey. Notes of rambutan and grapefruit too. Excellent mouthfeel, not fizzy. Long lasting hops aftertaste. This is a very good beer, regardless of style - and of course MUCH better than any industrial pilsener. |

1856 | Jever Pilsener | Germany | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.3
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 This is a crisp German pilsener with a considerable hoppy bitterness. Been a while since I had it, can't get it in Norway so far. Rerate on tap in Hamburg: Light bodied, but dominated by a distinct hoppy bitterness from start to finish. Typical Northern German pilsener style. |

1857 | Pilsner Urquell | Czech Republic | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.4
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 A pilsener as good as pilseners get. Rerate: Had it from can this time, still the benchmark of a good pilsener. Only 4.4% now, but I remember (I think!) that the alcohol content was about 5.2% when I first had it (in Germany) many years ago?! |

1859 | Karlsberg Karlsbrau | Germany | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 2.9
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 Draught in Nice, France. Golden colour, decent head. Moderate aroma. Tolerable hoppy bitterness in the flavour and aftertaste. Not a "big" beer, but a decent and drinkable pils, as far as I'm concerned. Some more aromatic hops would have been nice, though. |

1860 | Neumarkter Lammsbräu Edel Pils | Germany | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.6
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8 330 ml green bottle, now available in Norway (Vinmonopolet). Crystal clear pale golden colour, large and lasting head, leaves a nice lacing. Aroma has surprisingly much (for a pilsener, that is) malty sweetness, some aromatic hops too. Notes of grass, hay and honey. Flavour has distinct and very good hops, balanced by a mellow maltiness in the background. Bitter aftertaste. A very good pils in my book, as far as pilseners go. The multinational brewers of cheap pale lager swill have something to learn here! Like all beers from Neumarkter Lammsbräu, it is organic. |

1861 | Lindeboom Pilsener | Netherlands | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.1
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 300 ml bottle, now available in Norway (Vinmonopolet). Golden colour. large head. Fairly malty aroma for a pilsener, flavour is also relatively sweet for a pils, there’s some unpleasant cardboard / boiled vegetables hints in the background, tolerable hops in the finish. A drinkable pils after all, but it can’t match the best Czech and German pilseners. |

1867 | Atna Økologisk Pils | Norway | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.2
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6 330 ml bottle, bought at Ole Simon, Sandnes. Batch # 22. Unfiltered, unpasteurised and bottle conditioned organic pilsener (doesn’t that make it a Kellerbier?). Cloudy brownish golden colour (would probably be clearer if the sediments hadn’t been disturbed through transport). Moderate white head. Moderate sweetish aroma, some fruit, some aromatic hops, hints of leather and wet cardboard. Flavour is tolerably hoppy on a decent malty base, hints of citrus. Moderate carbonation. Acidic finish. No masterpiece, but not bad either. |

1868 | Gambrinus Desítka Svetlé 10° | Czech Republic | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.0
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 Draught at an "Irish" theme pub in Prague. Waitress said plato was 10 when I asked. Hope I’m rating the right beer. Golden colour, low head. Malt and fruits aroma. Moderately malty pale lager, low bitterness. Easy drinking, but unremarkable. |

1870 | Ödmans Tjeckopilsner | Sweden | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 2.8
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 On tap at Pannrummet. Golden colour, moderate head. Moderate grassy and floral aroma, some strange sidenotes of sweat too. Reasonably hoppy flavour, on a diffuse and somehow "unclean" background of malts and saltiness. Possibly not the right brewing water quality for a pilsener? |

Fairly strong grassy aroma, notes of fermenting fruits, hints of vomit. A tolerable pilsener / pale lager with at least SOME hops. Easy drinking. |
