1177 Goose Eye Mild Goose Chase United Kingdom Bitter 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Cask conditioned at the North Riding Hotel, Scarborough. The ABV was 3.8%. Copper coloured beer, creamy light tan head. Malty aroma, notes of toffee. Malty flavour, smooth mouthfeel, some caramel, dry hops in the finish. Okay. I suppose the name of the beer suggests that this is a mild, but to me it’s a typical Northern English malty bitter.

1178 York Stonewall Bitter United Kingdom Bitter 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Cask conditioned at The Last Drop Inn, York Brewery’s first pub. Deep golden / amber colour, creamy head. Pleasant malty aroma with some fruity hops. Flavourwise this is a decent standard bitter with a smooth mouthfeel and decent hops in the finish. Okay.

1179 Stonehenge Ales Sign of Spring United Kingdom Bitter 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Cask conditoned at The Lord Rosebery, Scarborough. ABV was 4.6%. The barman asked me: "Are you SURE you want this beer? - it’s GREEN!" - even though I ordered merely a half pint. He also offered me a free sample of a few centiliters first, to see if I liked it. Of course I insisted on trying it, and asked if he by "green" meant that the cask was too "young" and shouldn’t have been put on yet. But no, green was indeed the actual colour of the beer - poisonous green, you might say. Creamy white head with a greenish hue. Moderate aroma where nothing stood out. Moderately fruity flavour with a dry finish. Drinkable, but the green colour is just a gimmick - I would rather have a beer with a more pronounced aroma and richer flavour.

1180 Flowers IPA United Kingdom Bitter 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Cask conditioned at the Aidensfield Arms, Goathland. This is a standard English bitter, not what you would think of as a well-hopped "IPA". Deep golden brown colour, low creamy head. Nice hoppy / fruity aroma. Smooth mouthfeel and flavour. Not very bitter at all.

1182 Badger Fursty Ferret United Kingdom Bitter 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Rerate, 500 ml brown bottle, at Cardinal, Stavanger. ABV is 4.4%. Clear and reddish brown colour, moderate white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, brittle, burnt breadcrumbs and earthy hops, hints of forest, moss and dark berries. The flavour has again malts, caramel and burnt breadcrumbs, followed by earthy hops. Bitter and roasty aftertaste. I'm upping the score a little. Original rating: 500 ml bottle, from the fridge (= too cold) at Arnie’s Coffee Bar / Bistro, Whitby. ABV was 4.4%. Brown colour, fizzy, minimal head. Reasonably hoppy aroma with some "boiled" malty notes. Brown ale flavour, some caramel and toffee. Oct. 2016: Cask half pint at The Eel Pie, Twickenham. Deep golden to copper colour, small white head. Toffee and fruity aroma. Fruity flavour, hints of currants, medium dry. Very moderate hops.

1183 Isle of Skye Hebridean Gold United Kingdom Bitter 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. Full name is "Isle of Skye Hebridean Gold Porridge Oat Ale". ABV is 4.3%. Deep golden colour, creamy and lasting off-white head. Pleasant fruity hops in the aroma. Smooth mouthfeel. The flavour has moderate malts and acceptable hops, hints of nuts and maybe some toffee. The porridge oat is just there as an airy notion in the background. Dry hoppy finish. Easy drinking, nice enough.

1184 Durham Cloister United Kingdom Bitter 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. ABV is 4.5%. Bottle conditioned. Deep golden colour, huge white head. Lovely hoppy aroma with notes of citrus / grapefruit and pineapple. The flavour is also distinctly hoppy throughout, with grapefruity notes, but there is also a tolerable malty base. Refreshing, even though I drank it a bit too warm. The excellent Durham Brewery proves they can brew good beers with a moderate ABV too.

1186 Nethergate Red Santa United Kingdom Bitter 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Bottle conditioned, ABV is 4.2%. Brewed with rye, and Boadicea as single hop variety. Deep brown coloured beer, low off-white head. Nice and perfumed aroma of butterscotch, treacle, red fruits (esp. cranberries) and mild Christmas spices. The mouthfeel is quite thin for a Christmas ale. The flavour is fairly fruity with moderate hops and Christmas spices in the finish. Okay beer, but for Christmas I want something with a fuller mouthfeel than this one.

1190 Copper Dragon Challenger IPA United Kingdom Bitter 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.8%. Deep golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate but pleasant fruity aroma of Challenger(?) hops, also notes of butterscotch and fudge, hints of candy. Light bodied, thin mouthfeel. The flavour belongs to a standard bitter (in a blind test I would probably have guessed that the ABV was closer to 4.0% than 4.8%), moderate malts and hops, slightly fruity - but the hops are certainly not plentiful enough to justify the label "IPA". The troops in India in Victorian times would probably not recognise this as an IPA - but the average bitter drinker in a modern English pub will probably be satisfied with this one as a "somewhat-stronger-than-average" session bitter.

Cask 1/3 pint, gravity dispense, at the 16th Twickenham Beer & Cider Festival, Golden colour, white head. Moderate malty aroma, some toffee, a little fruit. The flavour is nice enough, but not very special - probably got the Gold award in the CBoB 2016 for not being offensive in any way.
