Sour flavour, lactic acid and loads of star anise, nothing else. Drainpour. I can't believe I paid good money for this crap.

330 ml bottle, from SPAR Jørpeland. ABV is 4.5%, IBU 20. Overcarbonated, my slim pilsener glass fills completely by white (or slightly off-white) foam, a hazy and brownish-golden beer appears only very slowly. Unusual aroma of tea and lemon juice. Fizzy and citric mouthfeel. Dry and weird herbal flavour of tea, hints of lemon rind. One of the least successful beers I've had from Nøgne Ø.

330 ml bottle, from BilkaToGo, Skalborg. ABV is 5.8%. Slightly hazy pale golden colour, huge to moderate white head. Aroma of birch sap / birch leaves, pine needles and sprucetips, a hint of bog myrtle / sweet gale. The flavour is moderately citric and medium sweet, with the same elements as the aroma. Interesting beer, without hops.

Jan. 2018: 500 ml bottle, from Ales By Mail. ABV is 4.7%. Malts are Golden Promise, Malted Wheat, Roast Barley. Hops are Admiral, Northdown, Phoenix (all UK). Ingredients include orange peel, molasses and spices. Dark amber to copper colour, moderate head, slightly off-white. Aroma of spices, cloves, allspice and nutmeg come through. There might also be some cinnamon and ginger in there. Also hints of orange peel and caramel. The flavour is malty with a hint of caramel, but is not very sweet. It is also distinctly spicy (said spices, also hints of white pepper), with fruity notes of orange peel and dark dried fruits. Earthy English hops. Good beer.

May 2014: 650 ml bottle, from the Norwegian importer. ABV is 7.5%. Ingredients include lemongrass, coriander, kaffir lime, lemon and grapefruit peel. Hazy golden colour, moderate white head. Aroma of lemongrass, coriander and citrus fruits / citrus peel. Spicy and citrussy flavour, with distinct notes of said ingredients. Hoppy and spicy finish. Refreshing and enjoyable. Would buy again.

April 2020: 330 ml can, from Vinmonopolet (Kvadrat or Nettbutikken). ABV is 7.5%. Orange to copper colour, slightly hazy. Moderate white head. Aroma of mint, citrus and chili. Peppery flavour, again with chili, mint and citrus, not too sweet. Moderate but fairly distinct bittering hops.

March 2014: 500 ml bottle, from the Norwegian potential importer. ABV is 4.3%. Chestnut coloured beer, moderate to low off-white head. Dryish, dusty and spiced aroma, hints of coconut and orange peel. Fizzy mouthfeel. Medium dry flavour, "artificial" notes of coconut, orange peel, dust and unpleasant spices, minimal hops. Very unbalanced. Sorry, this one did not rock my boat.

500 ml can, probably from Bunnpris Sauda. ABV is 4.5%, IBU 25. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Large to moderate beige head. Aroma of Christmas spices and gingerbread: cardamom, coriander seeds, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. I feared the flavour would be too sweet, but it is not. Fairly light bodied, with just enough malts to support the distinct notes of said spices. A moderate hop bitterness in the aftertaste.

500 ml bottle, ABV 4.0%, from Joker Vatlandsvåg. Also sampled on numerous occasions previously. I still think this "beer" should be unrateable, but apparently it is. Best served over ice, this alcoholic soda has a nice ginger flavour and "burn" throughout. Golden colour, pours sparkling with a large white head. Sugar, fruit soda esters and ginger - a lot of it. A nice drink when I want something else than a beer.

330 ml bottle, from Bunnpris Sauda. ABV is 4.7%. Hazy orange to brown colour, moderate head, slightly off-white. Aroma of malts, juniper berries, cloves and liquorice, can't detect the vanilla. The flavour has the same elements, distinct cloves and juniper berries, a hint of vanilla. Quite good and interesting, even though the various spices might be said to be less than perfectly balanced.

Extremely rich mouthfeel. Powerful malty sweetness in the flavour, with an abundancy of Christmas spices, anise and English liquorice. Hints of juniper berries and burnt caramel. Lots of liquorice in the long aftertaste.

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.5%. Dark brown colour, moderate beige head. Moderate but fairly nice aroma of caramel malts and some vegetal notes (the pumpkin, I assume). Soft mouthfeel. Flavour of caramel malts and slightly roasted malts, moderate notes of pumpkin with some acidity. Slightly burnt aftertaste. Not difficult to drink and like.

500 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. ABV is 4.2%. Clear deep golden colour, small white head. Sugary aroma of soda / pop, sweetish malts and ginger. Moderate carbonation. The flavour is way too sweet and soda-like - what is the point? The nice ginger burn in the finish can't save this beer from the "won't buy again" category.

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.0%. Beautiful deep reddish brown colour, moderate off-white head with good retention. Nice aroma of caramel, also mild spicy notes. The flavour is spicy and complex with notes of caramel and dark dried fruits, esp. raisins. Some hoppy bitterness in the finish, slightly sharp in the aftertaste. Overall very good - I am astonished that it is not rated higher.

Cask half pint at The Justice Mill (JDW), Aberdeen. 6.0% ABV. Dark brown colour, beige head. Moderate but nice aroma, hints of chocolate and chili. LOADS of chili in the flavour, nearly too much, burning mouthfeel, on a background of smooth and fairly sweet malts with some chocolate and caramel.

Fairly crisp flavour with a little citrus in first sip, unfortunately followed by sweetish millet and weird hints of plastic.

Aroma of Belgian ale yeast, white kandij sugar syrup, stewed fruits and bog myrtle / sweet gale. Flavour of surprisingly distinct bittering hops, bog myrtle, medium sweet malts and sugar.

355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.0%. Deep golden colour, large white head. Aroma of grapefruit and pine. The flavour is distinctly hoppy throughout, like the "normal" Sculpin, but with the grapefruity and piney notes from the hops enhanced by added grapefruit. Good stuff.

The flavour is malty and sweet, but not too much. Distinct notes of sprucetips, also notes of caramel and brown bread, hints of prunes, whisky, smoke and salt. Unusual and interesting.

Shared 750 ml bottle, imported to Germany by BraufactuM. Bought at Citti-Markt Flensburg. Orginal bottle No. 42311. German bottle No. 313. ABV is 9%. Cloudy orange colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma of honey and herbs. Plenty of carbonation. The flavour is not nearly as sweet as I feared, but has distinct notes of heather honey and various herbs. Unusual and interesting.

500 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgaard. ABV is 5.5%. Deep brown colour, large to moderate beige head. Unusual and interesting spicy and malty aroma, also notes of brown bread and caramel. The flavour is is also distinctly malty, medium sweet with some caramel, and a combination of exotic and "dusty" spices and hops that I’ve had in no other beer. More of a beer I’d like to have on a dark autumn night than on this hot summer’s day.

341 ml bottle, from a Quebecois co-worker. ABV is 5.9%. Pinkish colour, slightly hazy. Very small and shortlived off-white head. Fairly strong wheaty, floral and fruity aroma, notes of lemons and hibiscus, hints of spices. Medium sour and lemony flavour, very refreshing. Mild spices in the finish.

341 ml bottle, merci to my Quebecois colleague Louis. ABV is 5.3%. Brown colour, minimal off-white head. Aroma of malts, caramel and over-ripe fruits, just a hint of pepper. Low carbonation. The flavour is distinctly malty, with plenty of caramel, but is not too sweet. A moderate bite of pepper in the finish, becomes very distinct in the aftertaste, and leaves a warming mouthfeel. Moreish.
