626 Aarhus Sommer-Hvede (Filtered) Denmark American Wheat 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

600 ml bottle (summer 2010), from Voldby Købmandsgård. ABV is 5%. Crystal clear pale golden colour, the bottled beer is apparently fitered (the draught version is unfiltered). Moderate but lasting white head. Ingredients include wheat malt, unrefined cane sugar, orange peel and coriander. In other words, kind of a hybrid between Belgian witbier and German Kristallweizen. Spicy aroma, notes of Belgian ale yeast, citrus and green apples. Refreshing flavour, tolerable hops with hints of coriander and citrus, some less pleasant dusty and metallic notes in the aftertaste.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

355 ml can, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.5%. Cloudy golden colour, large white head. Distinct aroma of pineapple juice, more traditional wheaty notes in the background, a hint of cloves. The flavour is wheaty and refreshing, with distinct notes of pineapple juice again. Minimal hops (18 IBU). Okay as a summer refreshment.

628 Boulevard Wheat Beer United States American Wheat 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Shared 355 ml bottle, as Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat Beer, from the Norwegian importer. No ABV mentioned on the label. Sand coloured beer, moderate white head. Moderate wheaty aroma, just a hint of banana and cloves. Light bodied, plenty of carbonation. The flavour has distinct notes of cloves, hints of banana and bubble gum. Not too sweet. Drinkable, but the Germans do it better.

629 Windswept Brewing Marooned United Kingdom American Wheat 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Cask halfpint at The Granite City (JDW), Aberdeen Airport. Red colour, off-white pinkish head. Fruity aroma, blackcurrants and other dark berries. Tart flavour of blackcurrants, lemon peel and bittering hops. I have possibly also a bottle or two of this one in my stash, but will most likely not buy again.

630 Westbrook White Thai United States American Wheat 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

355 ml can, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5%. Very pale yellow colour, only slightly hazy, moderate white head. Strong aroma of lemongrass / lemon and ginger, a hint of dill. Wheaty flavour with distinct notes of lemongrass and citrus, also ginger, with a hint of dill in the very moderately bitter finish. Nice and refreshing, definitely a beer I’ll have again - especially in summer.

375 ml bottle, vintage 2021, at Cardinal, Stavanger. ABV is 5.8%. Slightly hazy and very pale straw colour, small white head. Aroma of lactic acid and mild spices, some yeasty notes, fruity hints. The flavour is medium sour and citric, quite refreshing, low bitterness.

633 Cairngorm White Lady United Kingdom American Wheat 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, from Gulating Ølutsalg, Stavanger. ABV is 4.7%. Allegedly a Bavarian style wheat beer, but it is brewed with orange peel and coriander, like a Belgian witbier. Nearly clear deep golden to amber colour, small white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, brown bread, hints of over-ripe red fruits. The flavour is moderately malty and fruity, with red and dried fruits more than citrus. Moderate hops. Pleasant to drink. Tastes like a decent English bitter more than anything wheaty. I rate beers on a hedonistic scale, and liked this one - if I rated by style, it would fail.

April 2014: 500 ml bottle, from the Norwegian importer. ABV is 4.3%. Clear golden colour, moderate to low head. Weak floral hops in the aroma, a hint of honey. The flavour has some citussy hops, and is quite refreshing (yes, I was thirsty), but otherwise rather bland and boring.

636 Sierra Nevada Wheat United States American Wheat 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

12 fl. oz. bottle, bought at Damsgaard Supermarked, Frederikshavn, Denmark, as "Sierra Nevada Unfiltered Wheat Beer". Pours very fizzy with a fairly large head. The beer is pale golden, slightly hazy. Pleasant sweetish aroma with strong notes of honey and flowers. Light bodied and refreshing with a distinct hoppy bite in the finish, but not much else going on. Still much better than some of the other ratings here made me fear.

637 St. Peters Wheat Beer United Kingdom American Wheat 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Bottle, at Haket, Göteborg. Amber colour, low head, looks like a bitter. Leather and dusty attic in the aroma, some fruit too. Taste of lager with some caramel, nothing spectacular, some hops in the finish. Not bad, but not worth the price.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Cask conditioned at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004, gravity dispense. Orange aroma. I suppose orange peel has been added to the brew. Decent wheat flavour, but not outstanding.

639 Pardubický Porter 19% Tmavé Pivo Czech Republic Baltic Porter 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, bought at Pivni Galerie, Prague. Dark reddish brown to ruby colour, large & thick tan head. Aroma is surprisingly moderate: some malts, porridge, hints of roastiness, caramel. Flavour is more impressive: an immediate malty sweetness hits the tongue, followed by a pronounced roastiness with coffee elements. A robust & warming mouthfeel, alcohol is evident but not unpleasant. Roasted malts and quite a bit of hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste. Not bad.

640 Sinebrychoff Porter Finland Baltic Porter 4.9

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

(Bottle). Pitch black porter, even held against the light. Tan head. Complex aroma of coffee, cocoa, dried fruits, ensilage(!) and oak. The full and rich flavour has coffee, bitter chocolate and loads of roasted maltiness. Not too sweet, just the right bitterness in the aftertaste. This must be a world class porter!

641 Aldaris Porteris Latvia Baltic Porter 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

(500 ml bottle). Dark ruby colour. Good light tan head. Interesting vinous aroma of raisins, blackberries, ensilage, seaweed and some coffee. Full, rich and smooth flavour - but unfortunately too sweet. Like a good cup of coffee with too much sugar. Syrup battles with a nice roastiness in the aftertaste. Still, an interesting Latvian aquaintance - well worth sampling.

642 Ceres Royal Stout Denmark Baltic Porter 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

The brewery claims this one to be "the best porter in the world". I don't think so - but it sure is a very decent, smooth and rounded Baltic porter. Fairly sweet, but not too much. A beer I always come back to when in Denmark. The best from Ceres / Bryggerigruppen.

643 Thisted Limfjords Porter (Double Brown Stout) Denmark Baltic Porter 4.3

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

A heavy mouthful from one of Denmark's few independent regional breweries, which I'm always happy to support every summer. A nice region with nice people who make several acceptable beers - this is their very best one. However, I have to admit that Gl. Carlsberg Imperial Stout Porter is slightly better. RERATE: Characterized as a 'double brown stout' by the brewery, this stout / (Baltic) porter (in Denmark that's more or less the same thing) is really so different from Gl. Carlsberg Imperial Stout Porter (now called Carls Porter) that it's a bit unfair to compare the two. The smoked flavour of the Limfjordsporter is really something out of the ordinary. I've never had a rauchbier (*I have now!), but I guess this one has some elements in common with that style (* i.e. it's smoky, but not smoked meat like the Aecht Schlenkerla, thank God). I highly recommend a sample of Limfjords-Porter! RERATE 2: Hey, this beer grows on you! Black (okay, extremely dark brown) as the deadliest of sins, moderate thick tan head, aroma and flavour of tar, resin and midsummer bonfires. Overwhelming smoked bitterness. Tastes like it's been stored in a Viking ship through seven battles and a round-the-world tour. Simply outstanding.

644 Balik Beer Switzerland Baltic Porter 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Allegedly brewed according to an old Russian porter recipe, with kvas/kwas as one of the ingredients! Contract brewed by Brauerei Locher "im Auftrag der BALIK Räucherei im Toggenberg AG", website www.balik.com . The Räucherei even supplied the smoked salmon I had with this beer (330 ml bottle) at the Seafood Bar at Stansted Airport, London (Norwegian salmon, smoked in Switzerland, sold in England, eaten by a Norwegian - a well travelled fish!) According to the BALIK website the beer should be served cool at 12 degrees C, but I got it served fridge cold. While the coldness must have taken away some of the flavour details, it probably made the beer more drinkable with seafood, taking the edge off the heavy sweetness. The beer has a brown colour with a slight haziness, low head. Aroma and flavour are more like a port wine than a "normal" beer. Very sweet, warming mouthfeel (no surprise at 11% ABV!), spicy, a bit alcoholic, but interesting. Decent hops in the finish.

645 Carnegie Porter Sweden Baltic Porter 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

I had the 2001 'vintage', it probably would have developed its character if it had been cellared a few years like the brewery recommends, but as I personally have an extremely weak character, I was unable to wait! Even as fresh as this Carnegie is a fine porter. It may be tiresome repeating that porters have coffee-like qualities - actually, a good porter like this one has a lot better flavour than any cup of coffee! The aftertaste is moreish, this is definitely a beer I'll buy again. Good to experience that Pripps are able to brew something far better than their shitty lagers. Same recipe since 1836, great! Now if I just could find someone with an iron will and a huge padlock who would cellar a few bottles for me...

646 Carlsberg Carls Porter (Gammel Porter/Imperial Stout) Denmark Baltic Porter 4.7

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

After a rough start, this beer is pure velvet - sweet, robust, rich, malty and roasted with lots of coffee in the flavour. Nice bitterness in the aftertaste. Just the right strength. A beer I'll never grow tired of - one of my definite favourites.

647 Zywiec Porter Poland Baltic Porter 4.1

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle. Very dark ruby colour, large thick tan head. Malty aroma with smoked notes, elements of espresso coffee, tar and old woodwork. Flavour is initially a tad sweeter than I appreciate, roasted malts with tar, coffee and prunes. A distinct bitterness from the hops and roasted malts takes over, and lasts through the long aftertaste. The high ABV is well hidden. A solid Baltic porter, but not as good as Sinebrychoff.

648 A. Le Coq Jouluporter Estonia Baltic Porter 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

(0,5 liter bottle.) Whooa... an Estonian Christmas porter, available in Norway, even! This one is 1% stronger and more spicy than their ordinary porter , to obtain a "real" Christmas character. Dark brown colour, low head, lightly roasted spicy coffee aroma and flavour, decent bitterness in the aftertaste. Lots of delicious flavour and sufficient alcohol here, still a slightly thinner mouthfeel than some other porters (probably because it's bottom fermented) - which, however, will not stop me from buying this goody again. I had it on its own, must also be a great accompaniment with Nordic Christmas fare in the rougher end of the scale. Sweet, but not too much. All in all a Christmas beer to be recommended.

649 A. Le Coq Porter Estonia Baltic Porter 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

(500 ml bottle). Reddish brown colour, decent head. Aroma of caramel and leather. Not as sweet as I expected. Malty caramel flavour with just a slight roastiness, in a blind test I would surely classify this beer as a strong dunkel, not a Baltic porter. Relatively thin bodied, not nearly as good as their Jõuluporter (Christmas Porter). Disappointing for its style, if disregarding style you may find this as a decent and drinkable beer.

650 Utenos Porter Lithuania Baltic Porter 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. Deep reddish brown colour, not as dark as many other Baltic porters, large light brown head. Malty sweet aroma, hints of roastiness, dried dark fruits and bakery. Very sweet and malty flavour, verging on "cloying" but is not over the hilltop. Just enough hops to keep my interest. Mellow and rounded mouthfeel, again associations of something out of a bakery. Faint hints of roastiness and coffee in the background. I’m not quite sure what to make of this beer - maybe too sweet, but still pleasant enough to convince me to buy it again on a day my "sweet tooth" needs to be satisfied.
