5476 Baltika 5 (Zolotoe) Russia Pale Lager 1.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

500 ml clear bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Pale yellow to golden colour. Fizzy beer with a big head. Industrial sweetish pale lager aroma, notes of maize, candy and some fruit. The flavour is fairly sweet with some fruitiness, hardly any bitterness at all. Not much to write home about here.

5477 Grans Mammut Pilsner Norway Pale Lager 2.1

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Slightly darker than Gran's other pils varieties, bland and uninteresting like all products from this brewery. Sold in 1.25 liter plastic bottles only.

5478 Grans Fatøl Norway Pale Lager 2.2

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

(500 ml can). Brewed "under licence" (my ass!) in Denmark, no doubt by Gran's Danish partner brewery Harboe. Very pale golden brew, decent head. Quite strong fruity sweet aroma, not really good but not offensive either. Flavour is typical Harboe = completely uninteresting, a bit on the sweet side, low bitterness. Little aftertaste - at least you don't get the normal Grans metallicness.

5479 Grans Sommerøl Norway Pale Lager 1.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml bottle. Norway's cheapest 'summer beer' (they are all very pale, thin and boring beers). Very pale colour, moderate head. Weak grassy aroma. Little or no taste. Forget it!

5480 Trio Supporter Pilsner Norway Pale Lager 2.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 3

500 ml can. Pale golden colour, decent head. Weak aroma of rotting grass and cabbage + boiled vegetables. Some malts in the flavour, otherwise this a boring and uninteresting pale lager. Boiled vegetables in the finish. Minimal hops.

5481 Chakra Premium Lager Beer Norway Pale Lager 1.4

Aroma: 2 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml clear bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. This "Indian" beer is a gimmick brew of Trio Bryggeri (50% Mack owned), Skien, Norway. The beer is brewed with "the purest Norwegian water", but claims to be a "Product of India - Chakra Brewery". There is no evidence on the internet to suggest that the "Chakra Brewery" actually exists. And even if it did exist, it would hardly brew with "Norwegian water", would it? The beer is extremely pale yellow coloured, with a low head that disappears rapidly. The "skunky" / fruity / lemony whiff in the aroma is actually the best thing about this beer. Flavour is very bland and dull with just a hint of lemons, hardly any bitterness. Fizzy mouthfeel. Ice cold it may serve as a thirstquencher, or to wash down a hot curry, but for people looking for tasty beers, this is one to pass.

5482 Glutaner Sorghum-Based Premium Pilsener Belgium Pale Lager 1.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Also available in Norwegian grocery stores. ABV here is 4.7%. Probably my first beer ever brewed without any barley malt at all. They call this is a "Premium Pilsener", so you’ll know what they’re aiming at. But it’s a poor "pilsener", and there’s only one reason (but for those affected, a very good one) to drink this beer: if you suffer from coeliac disease and need to have a completely gluten-free diet. Pale golden colour, moderate white head, leaves a nice lacing. Weak grainy and slightly fruity aroma, with some of the "boiled" notes that you find in n/a beers and industrial pale lagers. Flavour is bland and boring, but the beer is not totally undrinkable, and has some very moderate hops in the finish.

500 ml can, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Pale golden colour, decent head. Moderate sweetish and sugary aroma, notes of grass and boiled vegetables, not very attracive. Moderate sweetish flavour, minimal hops. Another boring beer from Ringnes.

5484 Taj Mahal India Pale Lager 2.6

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 4.5%. Brewed and bottled by Blossom Industries, India (trade mark owner: United Breweries, Bangalore). Imported to Norway by ITG. Golden colour, moderate head. Flowery aromatic hops, maybe some citrus too. Standard pale lager flavour without any offensive sidenotes, rather fizzy but with tolerable hops for the style. I’ll admit that my expectations were very low, but for an Indian pale lager this one is not too bad. At least it will be a tolerable accompaniment with your curry.

5486 Nydelige Lervig Sommerøl Norway Pale Lager 1.5

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml can. ABV is 4.7%. New (2007) "summer" (= pale and thin) lager, brewed by Lervig in Stavanger, canned for them by Trio in Skien. Pale golden colour, fizzy, moderate head. Weak and slightly fruity aroma. Fizzy and thin mouthfeel. Bland and boring flavour. Come on, Lervig - you can do better than this!

330 ml can. ABV is 4.5%. Pale golden colour, decent head. Sweetish aroma with notes of flowers and corn. Light bodied, moderate carbonation. Very moderate malts and hops in the flavour, but not offensive. By no means a great beer, but not as bad as I feared.

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

On tap at Flamingoland amusement park, Yorkshire. Pale golden colour, low head. Slightly yeasty and fruity aroma. Very fizzy mouthfeel, bad. The flavour is also slightly yeasty with some undefined sickly notes, and some unpleasant dry hops in the finish. Not good.

5490 Estrella Damm 5.4% Spain Pale Lager 2.6

Rerate, 500 ml can, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.4%. (Probably also had this on tap in Spain, without taking notes there.) Clear golden colour, moderate white head. Sweetish aroma of malts, boiled rice, newmown grass, hints of honey. Medium sweet flavour of malts, a hint of honey, moderate herbal hops in the finish. Not too bad.

330 ml bottle, bought in Norway at Vinmonopolet. ABV is 5.0%. Brewed by "Wells & Young’s Brewing Co. Ltd., Bedford, UK for and under license from Kirin Brewery Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan". Website www.kirineurope.com . Crystal clear very pale golden colour, large and lingering head. Fairly strong sweetish fruity and flowery aroma, notes of artificial candy, hints of grass and honey. 5492 Hansa Chill Norway Pale Lager 2.3

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

330 ml slimline can. "To be served at 0 degrees C" = on the verge of freezing, which says a lot about Hansa’s ambitions with this beer. Defiantly I drank the beer at normal fridge temperature - and it was somewhat better than I feared! Pale golden colour, head goes from huge to none. Moderate fruity aroma. Fairly clean pilsener flavour, slightly lemony, hints of alcohol, very moderate hops. Moderate carbonation, soft mouthfeel. I’ve had worse beers - at least this one is drinkable.

330 ml can, brought home from Cyprus by my wife. ABV is 4.5%. Very pale goldeen colour, fluffy head. Moderate citrussy and grassy aroma. Thin mouthfeel, moderate flavour with a touch of citrussy hops. Not great, but not offensive either.

5494 Salitos Cerveza Especial Germany Pale Lager 2.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml clear bottle, ABV is 4.7%. Despite being bought at ICA Gourmet in Oslo: this not a beer for gourmets, nor for people who love good beer. Crystal clear pale yellow colour, big to moderate head. "Skunky" sweetish aroma, notes of citrus. Soft mouthfeel. The flavour is fairly sweet with a hint of citrus, minimal bitterness. Boring as hell, but not repulsive when cold. May serve as a thirstquencher on hot days, for people who otherwise would buy Corona or Sol. My first bottle (which I actually paid for) will also be my last.
