Bottle, 8.5% ABV, as Beer Here Dark Hops Hoppy Black Ale, RBNAG 2009 in Vatlandsvåg. Brewed at Nøgne Ø, Norway. Pitch black colour, moderate brown head. Very nice aroma of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate, hints of liquorice. Distinctly roasty flavour, very dry, notes of strong bitter coffee, hints of dark bitter chocolate. Good, but I’d like a little more sweetness.

On tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. Very dark brown to black colour. Roasty aroma and flavour, with sharpish piney hops throughout, quite bitter. Not too bad.

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 9.0%. Nearly black colour, moderate beige head. Aroma of roast malts and piney and grapefruity American hops. The flavour is very well balanced between the malts and the hops, a slight sweetness but not too much, roasty notes with hints of coffee, dark chocolate and liquorice, followed by a distinct grapefruity and piney bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. Jolly good beer!

Aroma of fruity and piney hops, on a background of moderate roast malts. Medium dry flavour, piney and moderately fruity hops, moderate roast malts with notes of coffee, a hint of dark chocolate. Score: 3.2 Also sampled April 2023 on tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. New score: 3.6

500 ml bottle, batch #916, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.5%. Malts are pale, dehusked chocolate, wheat, cara.hell and crystal. Hops are Herkules, Tomahawk, Amarillo, Simcoe, Cascade and Centennial. Yeast is US-Ale. Very dark brown to black colour, large beige head. Strong hoppy aroma, notes of pine, spruce and grapefruit, hints of tropical fruits and chocolate. Hoppy flavour too, but not extreme. Piney and grapefruity notes, with a distinct hoppy and roasty bitterness in the finish and long aftertaste. Good beer.

500 ml bottle conditioned, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.5%. Black colour, moderate tan head. Lovely aroma of citrussy hops, on a background of moderately roasted malts, hints of dark chocolate. The medium dry flavour has again citrussy hops, blended with distinct roasted malts, notes of strong coffee, dark bitter chocolate and resin. The contradictory "Black IPA" style is beginning to grow on me, and this one is a fine specimen.

Lovely malty aroma, mild roasty notes, hints of dark berries, also fruity and piney hops. The flavour is slightly on the sweet side, with moderate roast malts and fruity and piney hops. Medium bitter finish.

Rerate, 355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.7%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Large beige head. Dryish roasty aroma blends in with some fruity hoppy notes, hints of liquorice and sea water. Medium sweet flavour with distinct roasty notes, strong coffee, hints of liquorice and chocolate, followed by a very hoppy finish with resinous and grapefruity notes. Original rating: Shared bottle at hotel room tasting. Black colour, beige head. Very good aroma and flavour, hoppy and moderately roasty. Will definitely buy again when / if I can find it.

Nice aroma of mildly roasted malts, tobacco and toasted oak, hints of mild spices.The flavour has also mild roasty notes, mild coffee, some liquorice in the finish. Decent hops in the aftertaste.

Aroma of piney American hops, the roasty notes are fairly subdued. Distinctly hoppy flavour, piney and grapefruity hops galore, dry roasty notes and bittering hops in the finish.

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9.1%, 186 IBU, 71 EBC. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Large and lasting beige head. Delightful aroma of American hops, notes of citrus (incl. orange marmalade) and tropical fruits, also pine, hints of coffee. The flavour is medium sweet with notes of chocolate and mild coffee, but first and foremost well hopped, with citrussy and resinous hops throughout. The bitterness is, however, not as extreme as I feared , but solid enough. Another fine beer from Midtfyns and home brewer Claus Christensen.

330 ml can, as The White Hag Magic Mist Juicy Pale Ale, from Voldby Købmandsgård. ABV is 5.0%. Slightly hazy pale golden colour, large to moderate white head. Aroma of citrus and tropical fruits, a hint of spruce. The flavour is moderately citric, followed by notes of melon and tropical fruits. Low piney bitterness in the finish. Decent, but not exceptional.

Keg halfpint at the River Bar, Dublin. ABV is 4.5%. Golden colour, white head. Moderate citrussy aroma. Distinctly hoppy flavour, apples(?, can’t read my own handwriting), very bitter, probably partly due to a lack of body.

Shared bottle at local tasting, as Ebeltoft Lust for Life Session IPA. ABV was 5.5%. Hazy pale yellow colour, moderate white head. Nice aroma of fruity hops, some pine too. Medium dry flavour of fruity hops, with a piney and bitter finish. Good beer. *Bought again in Denmark. "Session IPA" is no longer part of the name, and ABV is 5.2%.

Fizzy mouthfeel. The flavour has citric and spicy hops, hints of tropical fruits, decent malts, and pine needles and resin in the finish.

The flavour has also notes of citrus and tropical fruits, hints of pine needles, with a resinous bitterness in the finish. Not "thick" or "chewy" at all.
