151 Poperings Hommel Bier Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

250 ml bottle, bought in Frederikshavn, Denmark. Slightly hazy pale golden colour, large head. Nice hoppy aroma, some yeasty and wheaty notes too, hints of citrus and pineapple. Flavour has dominant hoppy notes but not much else, relatively tart and bitter finish. Alcohol is well hidden, a refreshing beer despite its strength.

152 Het Kappitel Watou Blond Belgium Belgian Ale 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, bought in Frederikshavn, Denmark, as "Kapittel Watou Blond". "Het" seems no longer to be part of the beer’s name, or have they different labels for different countries? Anyway, the beer pours hazy golden with a large head. Typical Belgian blond ale elements in the aroma: Yeasty, fruity, spicy, oaky, hints of barnyard. Flavour is mildly spicy and hoppy on a moderately sweet and malty background. Not a "big" beer, but nice.

153 Het Kapittel Watou Pater Belgium Belgian Ale 3.8

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, bought in Frederikshavn, Denmark, as "Kapittel Watou Pater" (no "Het" on the label anymore). ABV is 6.0%. Clear and beautiful reddish brown colour, large and lasting light tan head. Nice malty aroma with notes of caramel and bakery, hints of wood, Christmas spices and dark fruits. Flavour is malty sweet but also fruity and zesty, quite nice. Some spices in the background. Definitely not a bad beer, but a tad too sweet to make me ecstatic.

154 Bornem Double Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.8

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml stubby bottle, bought in Frederikshavn, Denmark. Pours with an enormous and lasting creamy greyish light tan head, underneath the head a reddish brown beer very slowly appears. Pleasant and quite strong fruity and yeasty aroma, notes of bakery, spices and ensilage too. Flavour is sweet and fruity, notes of caramel malts and mild spices too, slightly acidic finish. Good beer.

155 Marks & Spencer Bière Blanche Belgium Witbier 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, bought in a store at Cambridge train station, and drunk from the bottle (hidden in the paper bag, of course) just outside the station (I was not arrested). I still had time to notice that the beer was cloudy and pale, like a witbier should be. Aroma and flavour of a decent standard witbier, no worse than Hoegaarden.

156 Het Happitel Watou Dubbel Belgium Abbey Dubbel 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, as "Kapittel Watou Dubbel" (no "Het" anymore), bought in Frederikshavn, Denmark. Chestnut colour, large light tan head. Lovely caramel aroma, also hops and dark fruits, hints of sherry, spices and oak. Flavour has also caramel sweetness with lightly roasted malts and moderate oaky and spicy elements, nice. Moderate hops in the finish. A pleasant beer to drink, will appeal to people with a "sweet tooth".

158 Timmermans Tradition Kriek Lambicus Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.8

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Sampled RBESG 2006, bottle, as Timmermans Tradition Kriek Lambic. Beautiful red colour. Barnyard and cherry aroma. Funky cherry flavour. A decent kriek lambic, if cherries are the matter of the day.

159 Ename Blond Belgium Belgian Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV 6.5%. Pale yellow colour, high level of carbonation, large white head. Lovely and "typically Belgian" aroma with complex spicy notes, hints of fruit. The refreshing flavour has mild spicy notes, and is not too sweet. Moderate hops in the finish. I'm quite ready for another one.

160 St. Feuillien Blonde Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml stubby bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.5%. Clear pale yellow colour, huge and lasting white head. The aroma has distinct notes of anise and other spices. Light bodied and refreshing for its strength. The flavour is not too sweet, and has also strong notes of anise, quite unusual in such a pale beer. Unfortunately I am not a big fan of anise in beer ...

161 Lindemans Faro Belgium Faro 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

375 ml dark green bottle with silver foil top, capped and corked. ABV is 4.2%. Soon available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Golden brown colour, moderate to low white head. Aroma of malts, cellar, fruit and kandij sugar, hints of oak. The flavour is fruity, moderately acidic and quite sweet, sugary and oaky notes. Faro is maybe not my favourite beer style, but this is a nice "change of pace" beer.

162 La Guillotine Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml mock stoneware bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9%. The glass fills completely by a white foamy head, and the golden beer below appears only slowly. Strong and "typically Belgian" sweetish aroma with yeasty, spicy and fruity notes. The flavour is also spicy, medium sweet and "typically Belgian", with distinct hops in the finish. Warming mouthfeel. A few of La Guillotine, and you might lose your head completely ...

163 Liefmans Cuvée Brut Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

375 ml green corked and caged "champagne" bottle, wrapped in red paper, as Liefmans Cuvée Brut, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.0%. Dark red beer, large pinkish-peachy head. Strong and intense aroma of cherries, also notes of almonds and marzipan. The flavour is cherries all the way, medium sweet, not "brut" by any stretch of the mind. At least it is somewhat drier than Liefmans Fruitesse. Just a hint of hops and oak in the finish. Quite good, if you like cherries (and who doesn’t?), and don’t expect a "normal" beer flavour.

164 Lindemans Peche Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

375 ml green bottle, gold foil top, capped and corked, as Lindemans Pecheresse. ABV is 2.5%. Will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Golden colour, large white head. Nice aroma of peaches, peach candy and peach flowers. Sweet flavour with loads of peach juice (minimum 30%, actually) and peach candy - and not much else. Just a moderate acidity. However, peaches taste good ... But don’t expect anything near a "normal " beer flavour!

165 Delirium Red Belgium Fruit Beer 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

330 ml mock "stoneware" bottle, red foil top. ABV is 8.5%. Will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Ingredients include cherries, cherry juice, elderberry juice, sugar, flavouring and sweetener. Hazy red colour, large pink head. Strong aroma of cherries and elderberries, hints of almonds and marzipan. The flavour is sweet with strong notes of cherries and elderberries as expected, somewhat "unfresh", but also an unexpected sharpish bitterness in the finish. Not really great.

330 ml bottle, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8%. Very dark brown colour, huge beige head. Not too sweet. Minimal hops.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

750 ml stylish "champagne" bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Amber to brown colour, large cream-coloured head. Nice vinous aroma, notes of oak and "fruits of the forest", hints of farmhouse. Vinous, oaky and well balanced flavour with moderate but sufficient hops. Extremely drinkable for its strength.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, ABV is 6.7%. Will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Brown colour, huge off-white to beige head. Pleasant spicy aroma, notes of brown kandij sugar, dried figs and oak. The flavour has the same elements as the aroma, and is not too sweet. A very drinkable dubbel!

169 St. Bernardus Tripel Belgium Abbey Tripel 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8%. Slightly hazy pale yellow colour, huge white head. Strong and "typical tripel" aroma: notes of Belgian ale yeast, fruit, flowers, mild spices and white kandij sugar. The medium sweet flavour is spicy and moderately fruity, with decent hops in the finish. Has everything you expect from a tripel.

170 Adriaen Brouwer Dark Gold Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml stubby bottle, from Vinmonopolet Vika, Oslo. ABV is 8.5%. Brown colour, huge beige head. High (too high) level of carbonation, even in the mouth. Fairly strong aroma, very much a "typical Belgian dubbel": notes of brown malts, caramel, brown kandij sugar and mild spices. The flavour has the same elements as the aroma, but is not too sweet. The hops are very moderate, I’d like some more. Still a decent and drinkable beer as it is.

171 Roman Sloeber Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml stubby bottle, from Vinmonopolet Vika, Oslo. ABV is 7.5%. Pale golden colour, slightly hazy in the end, huge white head. Aroma of grassy hops and mild spices. The flavour is quite refreshing for its strength, not too sweet, some fruity notes and mild spices again, moderate hops in the finish. Fairly decent beer, might buy again - but a slight metallicness in the aftertaste makes me uncertain about that.

172 Oud Beersel Bersalis Kadet Belgium Belgian Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, from Fenaknoken, Oslo. ABV is 4.5%. Golden colour, huge and lasting white head. Fairly strong fruity and spicy aroma, "typically Belgian". High level of carbonation, even in the mouth. Light bodied. Moderately spicy flavour, fairly dry for a Belgian ale, moderate hops (some more would be desirable). Nice and refreshing, but obviously not one of the "grand crus" of Belgium.

173 Greens Bottle Refermented Blonde Ale Belgium Belgian Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, as Green’s Bottle Refermented Blonde Ale, new at Vinmonopolet. Gluten free beer (no special grains, only de-glutenised barley). ABV is 5.8%. Very pale yellow colour, slightly hazy. Huge white head. Strong "wheaty" aroma (though the beer contains no wheat) of cloves, coriander and ripe bananas. High level of carbonation, even in the mouth. The flavour is rather sweet, fruity and spicy, again with notes of cloves and coriander. Not bad for a gluten free.

174 Diabolici Belgium Abbey Tripel 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

750 ml corked bottle, new at Vinmonopolet, as Diabolici, "brewed in BeNeLux for Anthony Martin". Note that it is brewed FOR them, and not BY them, so who the actual brewers are, remains to be investigated. ABV is 8%. This is closer to a tripel, and definitely not a dubbel. Golden colour, huge white head. Moderately spicy aroma, maybe somewhat less sweetish than your average tripel. The flavour is distinctly spicy, with some kandij sugar and a little caramel, but not too sweet. The alcohol is noticeable, but not overwhelming. A quite decent Belgian, but isn’t the idea of another "diabolic" beer name a bit worn out now?

175 La Rulles Estivale Belgium Belgian Ale 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

750 ml dark green capped bottle, from Vinmonopolet Vika, Oslo. ABV is 5.2%. Golden colour, large white head.Lovely aroma of fruity American hops, also some piney notes. Fairly light bodied. The flavour is also dominated by American hops from start to finish, piney and fruity notes, bitter finish, but not overdone. Regarding style: Yes, the beer is brewed in Belgium, but the style is closer to an American Pale Ale than a Belgian Ale.
