1551 Föroya Bjór Ydun Rabarbubjór Faroe Islands Fruit Beer 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml clear bottle, at Etika, Torshavn. ABV is 4.6%. Rosé coloured beer, moderate pinkish white head. Fresh aroma of rhubarb and citrus. Light bodied. Refreshing flavour of rhubarb and hints of citrus, not sweet, but the hops are too moderate. Goes well with sushi though.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, at Etika, Torshavn. ABV is 5.8%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Large creamy tan head. Moderate but nice spicy aroma, also notes of caramel. Smooth and pleasant mouthfeel. Malty flavour, notes of mild spices, hints of caramel, not too sweet. The best beer I’ve had from Føroya Bjor so far.

330 ml can, at Etika, Torshavn. ABV is 5.8%. Red colour, moderate beige head. Nice hoppy aroma (American hops?), hints of orange marmalade. The flavour has moderate but pleasant American hops throughout. A nice surprise from Okkara!

1554 Föroya Bjór Ekta Maltøl Faroe Islands Reduced Alcohol 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

500 ml clear plastic bottle, from a grocery store in Vestmanna. No ABV mentioned on the label, and yeast is not mentioned as an ingredient, but if the locals say it is 1.8%, so be it. At least it contains malts and Bavarian hops (and sugar). Dark brown colour, minimal beige head. Strong sweetish aroma of malts and caramel, a hint of smoke and seaweed. The flavour is very malty and very sweet, like a Danish hvidtøl, with loads of caramel. Good enough to drink if you have a sweet tooth, and have to drive ...

1555 Okkara Portari/Porter (5.8%) Faroe Islands Porter 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, from the brewery store in Velbastaður, where you are allowed to buy single bottles. ABV is 5.8%. Dark brown to ruby colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Roasty aroma, notes of cold coffee, distinct smoke and ashes, hints of liquorice. Relatively light bodied. Dry roasty flavour, some smoke, too moderate hops, hints of liquorice. Not bad, but could have been better.

1556 Okkara Ljósa Faroe Islands Reduced Alcohol 1.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml bottle, from a grocery store in Klaksvik. ABV is 2.6%. Antioxidant E300 and E223 added. Golden colour, low coarse white head. The aroma has notes of pilsener wort and citrus. Medium dry flavour, light bodied of course, boring, but some hints of malts and hops make the beer not undrinkable if you have to drive. Sourish finish.

1557 Föroya Bjór Paskabryggj Faroe Islands Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, sixpack from the brewery store in Klaksvik. ABV is 5.8%. Deep golden to amber colour, moderate white head. Aroma of caramel and citrus. Smooth mouthfeel. The flavour has notes of malts and some caramel, but is not very sweet. Very moderately hopped. Clearly drinkable, but not particularly interesting.

1558 Okkara Pilsnari Faroe Islands Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

On tap at the Faroe Islands tent at the ONS fair, Stavanger. Golden colour, moderate creamy white head. Moderate aroma of floral and grassy hops. The flavour is fairly malty for a pilsener, and the hops are noticeable, if not as plentiful as desired.

1559 Okkara Klassik Faroe Islands Vienna / Amber Lager 2.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

On tap at the Faroe Islands tent at the ONS fair, Stavanger. Served too cold for a Classic, but I fear a slightly higher temperature would not have helped much. Brown colour, moderate creamy white head. The aroma has notes of grassy hops, hints of caramel. Bland flavour, dry and "dusty", just a hint of caramel but not very sweet. Very moderate hops in the finish.

1560 Föroya Bjór Sct. Brigid Blond Faroe Islands Belgian Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. This might be the first beer I’ve had with angelica as one of the ingredients. (In the Nordic countries, this herb was not uncommon as a flavour ingredient in farmhouse beer and spirits in the olden days.) Hazy pale golden colour, big white head. Interesting and pleasant aroma of herbs, spices and Belgian ale yeast. Light bodied. Fairly dry flavour with moderate notes of herbs and spices, but the mouthfeel is too thin. Slightly fruity / acidic finish, very moderate bitterness. Could have been better, but well worth sampling.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. Deep golden to amber colour, moderate white head. Decent aroma of grassy and herbal hops (Hallertauer), hints of syrup and caramel. Refreshing flavour with a moderate malty sweetness and decent Hallertauer hops throughout. Much better than I feared.

1562 Föroya Bjór Green Islands Stout Faroe Islands Stout 3.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Moderate aroma of dark malts, hints of chocolate and mild coffee. Light bodied, thin mouthfeel for its strength. Lacks the full and creamy mouthfeel of a good stout. The flavour is quite dry, notes of roasted malts and thin coffee. The dusty bitterness in the finish is too moderate. Drinkable of course, but very far from the most impressive stouts I’ve had.

1563 Föroya Bjór Gull Faroe Islands Pale Lager 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. Ingredients include cane sugar and ascorbic acid. Typical pilsener pale golden colour, big to moderate white head. Fairly fresh and nice aroma of sweetish pilsener malts and grassy and herbal Hallertauer hops. The flavour has a moderate fruity sweetness and tolerable hops throughout. Not exceptional in any way, but much better than I feared.

1564 Föroya Bjór Portari Faroe Islands Baltic Porter 3.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, bought in Bier Spezi Hamburg. My first Faroese beer. Closest style for this bottom fermented beer would be Baltic Porter, but it's a rather poor example of the style. Deep reddish brown colour, large light tan head. Very moderate aroma, some lightly roasted malts, hints of plums. One-dimensional flavour of roasted malts and coffee with a strange sourish and slightly metallic finish. Coffee and sourish metal (does that make sense? - battery acid?) in the aftertaste too. Weird. No masterpiece this one, but they have been trying.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

On tap in the Faroe Islands tent at the ONS 2008, Stavanger. Served too cold (= minimal taste). Amber colour, low head. Moderately malty aroma and flavour, hints of caramel. Not offensive, but boring.

1566 Föroya Bjór Pilsnar Faroe Islands Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 2.0

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

On tap in the Faroe Islands tent at the ONS 2008, Stavanger. Served ice cold (= minimal taste). Golden colour, low head. Moderate sweetish aroma. Fizzy mouthfeel. Bland pale lager flavour, nothing particularly offensive, but nothing to make you happy either. The Faroese singer Hanus G. Johansen made my day, the beer did not.

Bottle, RBNAG 2009 in Vatlandsvåg. Dark brown colour, nearly black, low head. Strange aroma and flavour of smoked beef, peat and tar. The flavour has also some roastiness and a very moderate sweetness.

750 ml clear screwcap bottle, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 11.5%. Pale yellow colour, sparkling, no head. Aroma and flavour of bitter cider apples and sweet eating apples, notes of sulphur and oak. The alcohol is noticeable in this strong cider. Fizzy mouthfeel. Not too bad.

1569 Laitilan Kukko Pils III Finland Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 2.8

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

500 ml can, kindly provided by yngwie for an informal tasting. The ABV was 4.5%. Type pale lager golden colour, moderate head. Fairly sweet aroma, fruit and malts. Standard pilsener flavour, fairly bitter finish, slightly metallic aftertaste. No masterpiece, but I’ve had worse pilseners. And the name is quite amusing in Norwegian!

(330 ml can, bought in Finland). Golden lager, low head, some hops in the aroma but not much, slightly sweet, at least some malts are detectable in "the best Finnish ground water". Drinkable (not offensive), but far from great.

1572 Lapin Kulta Premium Lager (2007-) Finland Pale Lager 2.4

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger, as Lapin Kulta Premium. Was said to be 4.5%. Golden colour, low white head. Moderate floral aroma, not bad, not remarkable. Crisp and fairly dry flavour, but far too modest on the hops. This is a beer you’d drink on a tropical beach, rather than in the wilds of Lapland.
