27 | Engelszell Gregorius Trappistenbier | Austria | Abbey Quadrupel | 3.7
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8 Dec. 2012: Shared bottle at local tasting. Hazy dark brown colour. Moderate malty aroma with a hint of smoke. Rich and pleasant malty flavour. This is a doppelbock, not a Belgian strong ale! Not very sweet though, and the high ABV is well hidden. Hints of salt and smoke. |

30 | Schloss Eggenberg Samichlaus Bier | Austria | Doppelbock | 1.4
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 2 (Bottled 2003). Deep golden/amber colour, moderate head. Aroma of sugary alcohol and hay. Grossly over-hyped and over-rated beer, mostly by people obviously fascinated by the high ABV. Sorry, I have difficulties respecting the ratings of people who actually LIKE this crap. Flavour is cloyingly & revoltingly sweet, alcohol, molasses, syrup, syrup and more syrup. And alcohol. Did I mention syrup? And alcohol? This is gross. This is REALLY gross. Half of it went down the drain. And I paid nearly US$10 (in Norway) for this bottle! (Sob!) Cellaring it for 30 years might have helped A LITTLE, but why cellar crap? A real drainpour, if I ever saw one. Thank God I drank it in November - "Samichlaus" would have ruined my Christmas completely. |

31 | Edelweiss Hefetrüb Weissbier | Austria | Hefeweizen | 3.9
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8 (500 ml bottle). Typical hefe cloudy golden, large head. Lovely strong aroma of ripe bananas, bubblegum and cloves. Cloves in the flavour too, light bodied, tasty but could still use some more "bite". Like most weissbiers not too much aftertaste. Good, not outstanding. |

33 | St. Bernardus Prior 8 | Belgium | Abbey Dubbel | 4.1
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7 750 ml corked (champagne style) brown silk print bottle, bought in Denmark. Brown colour with a slight haziness, pours with a large fluffy off-white head. Very nice aroma of oak, leather, yeast, brown sugar, dried fruits and spices, hints of barnyard. Flavour has plenty of brown sugar, malts, oak and figs, hints of sour berries. Some spices and a certain alcoholic bite in the finish. I had to struggle to finish the big bottle by myself, which means that the brown sugar sweetness combined with 8% ABV becomes a little too much in the end. The big bottles are for sharing! Still - this is another solid abbey beer. |

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8 Corked and capped "champagne" bottle, vintage 2002, RBESG 2005 Grand Tasting. Hazy red colour. Sour cherries and horseblanket aroma. Flavour is sour, oh so sour - very sour cherries dominate, but there are lemon and grapefruit notes too. Spritzy. Sour aftertaste. Moreish indeed - one of the few beers at the tasting I found hard to leave for the next sample. |

Intensely sour flavour, lemons with notes of raspberries and blackcurrants. Overpowering and delightful at the same time. |

40 | Watou Tripel | Belgium | Abbey Tripel | 4.2
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 750 ml silk-print corked (champagne style) brown bottle, bought in Denmark. Golden colour, slightly hazy, pours with an enormous, fluffy and lingering white head. Very nice aroma of yeast, oak, brown candy sugar, horse stable and cigars. Slightly spicy and peppery flavour with tolerable maltiness and hops, and a slight alcoholic bite. Aftertaste is okay, but does not last "forever". Not a particularly complex flavour, but a good beer all the same. |

41 | Abbaye des Rocs Grand Cru | Belgium | Belgian Strong Ale | 3.9
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 1.5 liter magnum bottle, RBESG 2005 Grand Tasting. ABV was 10%. Intense oaky and malty aroma. Flavour is also intensely oaky and moderately sweet. I probably drank it too warm, will need to rerate when available at cellar temperature. As it was, it’s not my definite favourite, but obviously a well crafted beer. |

45 | Rochefort Trappistes 6 | Belgium | Abbey Dubbel | 4.2
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9 330 ml bottle, at the 32nd Cambridge Beer Festival. Served directly from the fridge. Had to wait half an hour before I could drink it. Strange thing with British pubs and beer festivals - they’re very conscious that their native cask ales should be served at cellar temperatures, but foreign bottled beers are served ice cold, no matter what! Barnyard aroma with notes of dried fruits and oak, improves as the beer warms up. Flavour has much of the same elements as Rochefort 8 and 10, just on a more moderate scale. Dried fruits, brown sugar, tobacco, oak. |

48 | Dubuisson Cuvee des Trolls | Belgium | Belgian Strong Ale | 3.2
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 Draught at Den Tatoverede Enke, Copenhagen. Hazy golden / amber colour, decent head. Not very exciting aroma, just some faint notes of malts, hay and apples. Flavour has some malty sweetness and weak spices. Rather alcoholic. This is no masterpiece to offer a real Norwegian troll - and I should know what I’m talking about! |

49 | Dentergem Wit | Belgium | Witbier | 3.5
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 Draught at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. Cloudy pale yellowish colour, thick creamy head. Typical witbier aroma and flavour, coriander and orange peel, yeasty, a bit funky too. Light bodied, refreshing. Very moderate and bland aftertaste. |

50 | Celis White | Belgium | Witbier | 3.5
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7 Belgian brewed Celis White, allegedly also known under its alias "Ertvelds Wit". Draught at Den Tatoverede Enke, Copenhagen. Typical wit appearance. LOVELY aroma of burnt caramel / treacle and spices. Flavour is not nearly that exciting, this is a fairly watery and bland wit. |
