500 ml test bottle from the brewery. ABV is 4.5%. Hazy golden colour, large white head. Lovely and fairly complex aroma of hops - notes of grapefruit, tropical fruits, pine and spruce - some mild spicy notes too. Very hoppy flavour throughout, with the same elements as the aroma, and a sharpish bitter finish. The mouthfeel is better than I feared for a 4.5% beer. This is a beer I expect will sell well.

440 ml can, from Det Gode Brygg, Kvadrat. ABV is 4.5%. Slightly hazy golden colour, small white head. Aroma of mango and piney hops. Good body for its strength. The flavour has also notes of mango and distinct piney / resinous hops, with a distinct bitter finish. The mango nearly drowns in the bitterness.

Sample from can at HaandBryggeriet tasting, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.8%. Pitch black colour, small tan head. Aroma and flavour of roast malts and chocolate, hints of cherries and raspberries. Very sweet flavour, too sweet for me, really - even if this is a sipping beer and not a refreshment beer. Hints of liquorice. The flavour is also fairly alcoholic.

Up to 2017: 500 ml bottle, batch #991, from Det Gode Brygg, Sandnes. ABV is 4.5%. Golden colour, moderate white head. Fairly nice aroma of German(?) and/or Czech(?) hops, grassy and herbal notes. Bland flavour, dry and "dusty", easy to forget. 2018 onwards: 440 ml can, from Bunnpris Sauda. ABV is 4.5%, IBU 10. Hops are Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe and Eukanot. Malts are pilsener, wheat and oat. Very cloudy pale yellow colour, moderate white head. Aroma of various citrus fruits and tropical fruits. Fizzy and citric mouthfeel. Flavour of fruity (citric, tropical fruits) and piney hops, the bitterness is moderate, but seems higher than 10 IBU.

440 ml can, from Vinmonopolet Herbarium, Stavanger. ABV is 8.0%. Hazy orange to brown-ish colour, moderate white head. Aroma of piney hops, caramel and orange marmalade. The flavour has some malty sweetness with caramel, balanced by fairly distinct piney / resinous hops. Nice beer.

On tap at HaandBryggeriet tasting, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Cloudy pale yellow colour. Both aroma and flavour have a well hopped character, with notes of citrus, tropical fruits and spruce. Moderate but sufficient bitterness.

Shared bottle at hotel room tasting, thanks to OleR. Black colour, low tan head. Moderate roasty aroma, oaky notes. Dry flavour, oaky and roasty. Decent enough, but I can’t say it is better than the "ordinary" Dark Force - on the contrary, I’d rather say.

Original rating: 500 ml bottle, as HaandBryggeriet Dobbel Dose IPA, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Bottle conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurised. Batch #108, brewed Nov. 07, BB Nov. 09. ABV is 8.5%. Very cloudy orange-brown colour, big off-white head. Nice hoppy aroma, notes of flowers and orange marmalade, a hint of oak too. The flavour is sweet (too sweet) and somewhat alcoholic, with a substantial dominance of hops (as expected from a Double IPA), but not quite as extreme as I feared. Bitter finish. When pouring the last sediment in the glass the beer becomes extremely muddy, but the flavour also becomes more complex and interesting.

440 ml can, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.5%, IBU 10. Hops are Csacade, Citra and Mosaic. Cloudy reddish brown colour, surprisingly dark for something called a "golden ale". Moderate white head. Aroma of citrussy hops, also notes of spruce. Citric mouthfeel and flavour. Resinous hops in the finish, but the bitterness is moderate.

Intense aroma of Citra hops, citrus and tropical fruits galore, some catty hints too. Very hoppy flavour on a slightly sweet background, notes of grapefruit and resin, hints of tropical fruits, medium bitter finish. Maybe not perfectly balanced, but a decent beer all the same.

Pine needles, sprucetips and grapefruit in the medium dry flavour, more resinous bitterness than expected from alleged 10 IBU. Not bad, but there are many competitors in this field.

Nice aroma of American hops (Citra and Mosaic), notes of citrus and tropical fruits, a hint of spruce, also banana and cloves. Light bodied. Dry and citric flavour, banana and cloves again, a hint of sprucetips, low but noticeable bitterness. Refreshing and enjoyable.

Low carbonation. Sour but not extreme flavour, typical brettanomyces character. Appetizing. Original rating: Shared bottle at hotel room tasting, thanks to OleR. Hazy deep golden to orange colour. Fresh and vinegary / lemony aroma, notes of brettanomyces, farmhouse and fruit. Medium sour flavour, brett notes. Better than I feared.

Sample from can at HaandBryggeriet tasting, Cardinal Pub & Bar. ABV is 7%. Black colour, creamy tan head. Pleasant aroma and flavour of roast malts, dark chocolate and coffee. I tend to prefer stouts where the roast malts alone deliver the coffee flavour, but here the coffee addition is moderate and well balanced. A very good stout!

330 ml can, as Amundsen Super Santa Choco Shake Stout, from Vaaland, Bryne. ABV is 4.7%. Black colour, moderate beige head, Sweetish aroma of vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and lactose. The flavour is not as sweet as the aroma made me fear, but has otherwise the same elements as the aroma. Moderate hops in the finish.

375 ml bottle, batch #1377, as Lervig Off the Rack No.1, at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 14.5%. Pitch black colour, moderate tan head. Distinct aroma of dark malts, molasses, Jack Daniels whiskey, vanilla and oak, a hint of toasted coconut. Rich and warming mouthfeel. Sweet flavour, with the same elements as the aroma.
