5826 Corsendonk Agnus (Abbey Pale Ale) Belgium Abbey Tripel 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, named Corsendonk Agnus - Tripel. ABV is 7.5%. Courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Very pale clear golden colour, huge head. Sweetish and fruity aroma, both fresh and fermenting fruits, slightly yeasty, hints of spices. Flavour is moderately sweet and spicy, there’s an unusual element of saltiness / sea water. Light bodied for its strength, but the alcohol is noticeable. Low bitterness.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

355 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Imported to Europe by www.bierenco.nl . ABV is 4.8%. The beer starts gushing out of the bottle when opening. Deep golden to amber colour, decent head. Nice aroma of fruity hops, malt and raisins, hints of bakery and oak. Low carbonation in the glass, soft mouthfeel. The flavour is malty sweet with caramel and some crisp hops. Decent hoppy bitterness in the aftertaste. Uncomplicated, but okay.

5828 t IJ Natte Netherlands Abbey Dubbel 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. The beer is quite clear reddish brown when poured, a slight haziness may occur if the sediment is disturbed in the end, decent head. LOVELY aroma with intense fruity an vinous notes, spices are very much present too. The flavour is also fruity and spicy but not very powerful, hints of caramel. Moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness. A slightly salty finish. Light bodied, the ABV is well hidden. Easy drinking. The aftertaste is not remarkable.

5829 Mo Glad Laks Norway Light / Lite Lager 2.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

On tap at the brewpub / farm "gasthof". Served by the brewer himself, I also had a brief look at the brewery. ABV is 3.75%. The only beer on at the moment, but "Mørk Suldøl" is also a regular and the low ABV "Slåttøl" is a summer seasonal. The farm / brewery is situated next to one of Norway’s best salmon rivers. "Glad Laks" (= Happy Salmon = Jolly Fellow) is a golden lager, slightly hazy with a moderate head. Pleasant but moderate malty aroma, hints of butterscotch, toffee and melons. Flavour and mouthfeel are rather weak, with too modest hops. Some "dusty" / "dry" hops in the aftertaste. I expect the "Mørk Suldøl" to be better than this.

5830 Young's Old Nick United Kingdom English Barleywine 4.0

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 7.2%. Brewed at the Ram brewery, shortly before closing, BB date 20. Sep. 2007 (will probably be good much longer than that). Code L6263 07:57 Y. Hazy deep brown colour, large and lasting tan head. Nice aroma of malts and hops (no surprise), hints of vanilla, chocolate, raisins and leather. The flavour is perfectly balanced between the malts and hops, both elements being present in generous amounts. Notes of caramel, toffee and oak. Sweet, but not too much. I drank it colder than the recommended room temperature, and don’t regret that. A hoppy bitterness + oak in the aftertaste. A very nice beer - I hope "Wells and Young’s" will keep it in their portfolio.

5831 La Trappe Tripel / Koningshoeven Tripel Netherlands Abbey Tripel 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. Pours with an enormous head. Colour is deep golden to brown (amber), slightly hazy. Very nice aroma of fresh and dried fruits, spices, oak and exotic wood. Flavour is slightly spicy and peppery on a malty sweet basis with brown sugar and oaky elements. Not bad.

5832 Berentsens Økologisk Pils Norway Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml green bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Pale golden colour, moderate head. Moderate aroma of fruity and floral hops. Clean pilsener taste, not very different from Berentsens Rogalands Pils (but this one is organic). Light bodied, tolerable hops.

5833 Woods Hopping Mad Bitter United Kingdom Bitter 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Bottle conditioned. Hazy golden brown colour, moderate head. Unusual sweetish aroma, jam, cooked vegetables, hay. Malty flavour with a noticeable sweetness, some caramel and fruit, and a distinct "bite" from the Progress hops in the finish and aftertaste. Not bad at all!

5834 Wickwar BOB United Kingdom Bitter 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

500 ml brown bottle, BOB Original, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 4.0%. Brown colour, slightly hazy (bottle conditioned - the non-b/c version is called "BOB Sparkling"). Moderate off-white head. Pleasant fruity aroma with notes of English malt vinegar and leather. The flavour is slightly acidic with light malty and fruity notes. Low bitterness, soft mouthfeel, easy drinking. Light bodied. No masterpiece, but nice enough.

5835 Cwmbran Plum Porter United Kingdom Porter 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 4.8%. British porters often have an aroma and flavour reminiscent of plums, but this one is actually made with real plums. Dark brown colour, moderate tan head. Pleasant aroma of roasted malts, plums/prunes, bakery and mild coffee, hints of smoke. Rounded, smooth and mellow flavour with a very subdued bitterness, notes of gently roasted malts, just a hint of plums. Nice.

5836 Tuborg Lite 4,5 Norway Light / Lite Lager 1.2

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 2 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 3

500 ml can, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Very pale golden colour, fluffy head of moderate retention. "Artificial" sweet aroma, unpleasant. Incredibly boring flavour with "plenty of nothing". Even the new "Ringnes Lite" is slightly better than this. This is a low carb beer to forget!

5837 Ringnes Lite 4,5 Norway Light / Lite Lager 2.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

500 ml can, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Pale golden colour. Decent head. Sweetish "artificial" aroma, maize and some fruit, not very pleasant. Very light bodied, a little sweetness in the flavour with minimal hops, but not quite as bad as I expected from a low carb beer.

5838 Munkholm Münchener Norway Reduced Alcohol 1.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

500 ml can, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. This is not a "dark" n/a beer like the label says, it is a golden n/a beer, deep golden if you like. Fluffy white head. The aroma has some of the same sweetish and "boiled" notes of the other Munkholm beers (bad), but there are also some flowery aromatic hops around (good). Flavour is pretty sweet with some weak caramel notes, but there are just enough hops around to make the beer drinkable if cold. Hell, it’s a n/a beer, and you don’t expect much, but if you HAVE TO drive, or avoid alcohol of other reasons, this is the "best" Munkholm beer I’ve had so far.

5839 Ringnes Fatøl Norway Pale Lager 2.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

500 ml can, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Pale golden colour, decent head. Moderate sweetish and sugary aroma, notes of grass and boiled vegetables, not very attracive. Moderate sweetish flavour, minimal hops. Another boring beer from Ringnes.

5840 Ringnes Jubileums Pilsener Norway Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 2.9

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

500 ml can. Golden colour, decent head. Sweetish flowery and fruity aroma, not unpleasant. Flavour has more sweetness than most pilseners and is not "crisp", but the hops are not very distinct. Not too bad though.

5841 Ringnes Bayersk Lager Norway Helles / Dortmunder 2.5

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

500 ml can, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 4.5%. A new beer from Ringnes - I thought this was supposed to be a Münchener dunkel, but it is more of a Münchener helles. Deep golden colour, decent head. Very moderate aroma, some fruity hops and boiled vegetables. Flavour has some dusty hops and a hint of caramel - and is otherwise utterly boring.

5842 Ølve Jubileumsøl Steinkjer 150 år Norway Blonde Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Brewed for the 150th Anniversary/Jubilee of Steinkjer town. Unfiltered and unpasteurised, bottle conditioned. ABV is 4.7%. Pale yellow colour, slightly hazy, moderate white head. This beer is not "something completely different" to the degree of the "ordinary" Ølve på Egge (the latter is a presumed "Norse homebrew style" beer). This one is more like a British blonde ale, but notes of juniper branches in the moderate aroma and somewhat more distinct flavour still reminds you of its Norse heritage. Faint hints of smoke, tar and woodwork too. Light bodied, moderate hops in the finish. Worth a try.

5843 Westons Herefordshire County Perry United Kingdom Cider 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Had a taste of this perry (my first) at the Wear Valley CAMRA beer festival. Room temperature. Pale, hazy colour. Ciders and perries are not beer, but I must admit that this one was interesting. Very sweet, distinct pear flavour.

5844 Gourmetbryggeriet Barley Brew Denmark English Barleywine 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

660 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Also available in Norway at Vinmonopolet. ABV is 10.5%. Deep copper colour, large tan head. Interesting aroma, sweet and malty, but also notes of various berries, esp. blackberries, and molasses, caramel and bakery. Intense flavour, very malty and sweet with loads of caramel, partly balanced by a distinct hoppy bite. Spices and alcohol are present too (alcohol maybe more than I appreciate). Quite good, but not easy drinking - the bottle is for sharing!

5845 Fosters Twist Australia Fruit Beer 1.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml clear bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Brewed in the EU. ABV is 4.5%. Contains 1.1% lemon juice and 0.3% lime juice. Pale golden colour, large and lasting head. Weak aroma, just a whiff of citrus. Flavour is citrussy sweet, in an artifical way. Not really offensive, but not very good either. No bitterness nor any "real beer" character. Minimal aftertaste. Blindfolded I wouldn’t be sure that this was a beer at all.

5846 Aass Jule-Uten Norway Reduced Alcohol 1.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 2 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml brown bottle. The beer looks impressive - amber colour, with a huge and creamy long lasting head. Sickly sweet aroma of over-boiled vegetables and unfermented wort, typical n/a beer. The flavour is actually better than many other n/a beers (like the Munkholm range) - there is a certain maltiness with some caramel, and tolerable hops in the finish. If you MUST have a n/a beer, this one is at least (nearly) drinkable, if you can stand the smell.

5847 Glutaner Sorghum-Based Premium Pilsener Belgium Pale Lager 1.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Also available in Norwegian grocery stores. ABV here is 4.7%. Probably my first beer ever brewed without any barley malt at all. They call this is a "Premium Pilsener", so you’ll know what they’re aiming at. But it’s a poor "pilsener", and there’s only one reason (but for those affected, a very good one) to drink this beer: if you suffer from coeliac disease and need to have a completely gluten-free diet. Pale golden colour, moderate white head, leaves a nice lacing. Weak grainy and slightly fruity aroma, with some of the "boiled" notes that you find in n/a beers and industrial pale lagers. Flavour is bland and boring, but the beer is not totally undrinkable, and has some very moderate hops in the finish.

5848 Teme Valley Wotever Next? United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Bottle conditioned, ABV is 5.0%. According to the label, the beer is now available only in bottles. The beer gushes out of the bottle when opening. Hazy reddish brown colour, huge, creamy and long lasting off-white head. Vinous aroma with notes of moderate malts, barnyard and balsamic vinegar. Flavour is distinctly hoppy throughout, but there is also a moderately sweet maltiness with hints of caramel. Moderate carbonation in the glass. Bitter aftertaste. I get a "homebrew" feeling with this one. I like it!

5849 Otter Head United Kingdom English Strong Ale 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 5.8%. Reddish amber to brown colour, low off-white head. Minimal carbonation, nearly flat. Moderate but nice aroma of caramel, toffee, berries and dried fruits, with some oak in the background. Flavour has plenty of caramel, and a substantial bitterness in the finish and aftertaste, and a sweetish reminder of the relatively high ABV, but little else than that. Not an easy-drinking ale this one, and not particularly interesting either. Still better than many run-of-the-mill ales.

5850 Otter Bright United Kingdom Blonde Ale 3.2

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 4.3%. Pale golden colour (probably the palest British ale I’ve ever seen), slightly hazy. Moderate white head. Moderate fruity aroma. Flavour has some some citrussy notes and fairly decent hops, light bodied, dry bitter finish. In a blind test I might have guessed that this was a kölsch, or even a well-hopped pils. The lager malt used may explain that. An okay beer for a hot summer’s day, but I wouldn’t mind having some noticeable malts around, to balance the Fuggles hops.
