5479 Weltenburger Klosterbrauerei Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel Germany Dunkel / Dark Lager 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger, as (Marke) Weltenburger Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel. ABV is 5.3%. Despite using the "Marke Weltenburger" label of the Bischofshof-brewed beers, and not the "Weltenburger Kloster" label of the original monastery brewery, the rear label claims that this bottle has actually been brewed and bottled in the Klosterbrauerei. BB date 21.02.08. Hazy brown beer, huge off-white head. The moderate aroma has a strange combination of brown bread / bakery and citrussy notes, hints of cloves. The flavour has malty and bready notes, again combined with citrussy / lemony notes. Relatively light bodied and easy drinking. I had it on its own, probably nice with a light meal.

Lovely typical Hefe-Weissbier aroma, notes of cloves and banana / bubblegum. The flavour has also banana and cloves, hints of lemons, light bodied, minimal hops.

5484 Gledelige Lervig Juleøl 4,7% Norway Vienna / Amber Lager 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Rerate, 2005, 330 ml bottle: This is the first year that this beer is actually brewed by Lervig in Stavanger, but they haven’t changed the recipe much since it was contract brewed by Mack/Trio. "Gledelige" has been added to the name. It is still a very unpretentious "klasse D" juleøl, but I somehow think the hops are slightly better this year. Easy drinking, not offensive, OK with a meal, but not a "big" beer in any way. Original rating, 2003: (330 ml bottle). Norwegian "klasse D" Yule beer. Copper coloured, good head. Malty aroma with hints of caramel and oak. You don’t expect much from the grocery store versions of "juleøl" - and (at least in this case) you don’t get much either. Nothing offensive about it, just a one-dimensional beer with some maltiness (but not too sweet) and just a hint of toffee and oak - hardly any spices. Okay to wash down a meal, but for Christmas you want something better than this!

5486 Berentsens Jule Avec 2007 Norway English Barleywine 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

330 ml green bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Intended to be 12% ABV - the brewery had printed labels and all, but the beer stopped at 7.5%! The brewery had to make additional stickers with the new ABV. Very dark reddish brown colour, nearly black. Nice and creamy tan head. Sweetish malty aroma with notes of coffee, leather, liquorice and oak. Very sweet flavour, bordering on "cloying". Roast malts, coffee, oak, liquorice. Some more hops in the finish would have been nice. It will be interesting to see if the brewery can brew a better fermented beer next year, and achieve their 12%.

5487 Meteor Bière de Noël France Biere de Garde 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

650 ml green glass bottle, entirely covered in very "christmasy" plastic foil. Courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. Also available in Norway at Vinmonopolet, bestillingsutvalget. ABV is 5.8%. Clear and deep golden colour, large and lasting head. Fruity and spicy aroma with notes of farm kitchen, quite nice. The flavour has some of the "spritziness" of other bières-de-garde, but is sweeter, with caramel. Artificial "aroma" (whatever that may be) has been added, hmmm ... That is probably what I get some candy / pear drops notes from. Moderate hops in the finish. Not your typical Christmas beer, but drinkable.
