4576 Southern Tier Iniquity United States American Black Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, kindly shared by gunnar. Dark brown colour, nearly black. Low beige head. Nice aroma of moderately roasted malts, tobacco and some citrus. Flavour also of moderately roasted malts, and fruity and slightly resinous hops. The alcohol is well hidden. Good, but does not blow my socks off.

4577 Deschutes The Abyss United States Imperial Stout 4.7

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Bottled, as Deschutes The Abyss Reserve 2009, kindly shared by gunnar. Pitch black colour, excellent brown head. Lovely and complex aroma of dark malts, chocolate, coffee, tobacco, liquorice and leather, also some oaky and vinous notes. The flavour has notes of heavily roasted malts, balanced by a suitable sweetness, coffee and liquorice, hints of sandalwood. Superb!

4580 Harviestoun Mr SnoBalls United Kingdom Bitter 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, bought at Vaaland, Bryne. ABV is 4.5%. Deep golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate carbonation in the glass. OKish aroma of herbal and citric hops, hints of toffee and caramel, also a touch of blackcurrant leaves. Crisp flavour, not too sweet, with notes of toffee and hops, hints of blackcurrants. A moderately grapefruity bitterness in the finish. Quite enjoyable.

4581 Boliarka Svetlo Bulgaria Light / Lite Lager 2.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

500 ml bottle, a gift, BB date 25.08.08. Pale golden colour, moderate but lasting white head. Moderate carbonation in the glass. The aroma has first a whiff of grassy hops, then notes of cooked vegetables and undefined chemicals. Soft mouthfeel. The flavour has some hops and is first fairly refreshing, then the "chemical" notes from the aroma disturbs the tasting process too much.

4582 Shumensko Spetsialno Pivo (Premium Beer) Bulgaria Pale Lager 2.0

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 2 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

500 ml brown glass bottle with tear-off cap, as Shumensko Premium Beer. ABV is 4.6%. A gift, BB date seems to be 13.12.08. Extremely pale yellow colour, huge white head. Sweetish aroma with strong "chemical" notes, vile stuff. Soft mouthfeel. Bland and boring flavour with just a hint of sweetness and minimal hops, but not totally undrinkable.

4583 Holbæk Lillevang Pale Ale Denmark English Pale Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

500 ml bottle, thanks to Tom. ABV is 6.5%. Golden colour, big white head. Fairly strong aroma of Saazer hops, grassy and herbal notes. The flavour has a distinct bitterness from start to finish (Target hops?), but not much else, neither maltiness nor hop flavour other than the bitterness. Not my favourite pale ale this one.

4584 Holbæk Brown Ale Denmark Brown Ale 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, thanks to Tom. ABV is 6.5%. Deep brown colour, big off-white head. Moderate aroma of lightly toasted malts, brown bread, caramel and biscuits. The flavour has much the same elements as the aroma, with some caramel sweetness. Minimal hops. The alcohol is well hidden. A fairly nice and drinkable brown ale.

4585 Holbæk Fjord Beer Denmark Blonde Ale 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

500 ml bottle, thanks to Tom. ABV is 3.5%. Pale golden colour, big to moderate white head. Smells like an industrial pale lager, some grassy hops, hints of honey, metallic notes. The flavour is somewhat better than the aroma, light bodied of course, but there are fairly decent hops thoughout. Bitter and slightly metallic aftertaste.

4586 Ægir Saison Norway Saison 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Cloudy brownish golden colour, moderate white head. Very nice aroma of spicy and fruity Belgian saison yeast, sweetish malts and fruity hops. The flavour is moderately sweet with fruity and spicy notes, and with a distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish. A bitter "bite" remains throughout the long aftertaste.

4587 Carlsberg Carls Jul (Christmas Beer) Denmark Vienna / Amber Lager 3.4

330 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. Amber coloured Christmas brew of moderate strength. Malty aroma and flavour, some caramel, fairly good beer, but not outstanding.

4588 Carlsberg Carls Lager Denmark Vienna / Amber Lager 3.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Bottles, bought in Denmark. Historically interesting recipe, but this is not a beer I'd choose for daily consumption. Rerate: I generally like Münchener dunkels (which is what Carls Lager is supposed to be), but this one is too bland, despite some caramel in aroma and flavour. Would profit on a higher ABV.

4589 Carlsberg Carls Påske Denmark Vienna / Amber Lager 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Bottles, bought in Denmark. An acceptable reddish amber Easter brew, some caramel in aroma and flavour. Rerate: Fairly bland beer compared to the stronger Carlsberg Påskebryg 1847.

4590 Carlsberg Crown Denmark Strong Lager 2.7

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Bottle, bought in Denmark. "Danish malts, GLUCOSE SYRUP, Tasmanian hops" .... hmmm. Carlsberg’s attempt to make a beer with champagne-like qualities ... hmmm - I’m not a big fan of real champagne (price considered), but I’d definitely prefer real champagne for a celebration, if Carlsberg Crown were the best beer on offer. Fruity but not very strong aroma, bubbly/fizzy fruity flavour, not offensive but far from interesting. Alcohol is well hidden (behind what??). I am not a monarchist, but I think the happy couple deserved something better than this.

4591 Carlsberg Light Denmark Reduced Alcohol 1.9

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4

Typical "light" (which in Denmark and Norway previously always meant "low alcohol") beer. Little more to add. A 2.5% version was made for Norway. Golden colour, moderate head. A very watered down pale lager, but with some malt and very moderate hops in aroma and flavour, not totally undrinkable when you have to drive afterwards.

4592 Carlsberg Master Brew Denmark Strong Lager 2.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Bottle, bought in Denmark. Golden colour. Way too much alcohol for any body this brew might have. Sweetish aroma dominated by alcohol. Sweet and alcoholic flavour, not a beer for me.

4593 Carlsberg Capo Denmark Fruit Beer 2.3

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Bottle, bought in Denmark. Looks like a pale raspberry soda. Strong initial carconation, but hardly any head. Very light fruity aroma, light bodied despite the high ABV, refreshing but no real substance or aftertaste. No, Carlsberg - this is not what the world needs. Let's have Wiibroe Imperial Stout Porter* back, you m******f*****s (*which we eventually had).

4594 Carlsberg Påskebryg 1847 Denmark Doppelbock 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Botle, bought in Denmark. You really feel the power of spring (or resurrection, if you're religious) in this strong Easter brew. Sweet, but still well balanced. One of Carlsberg's better products.

4595 Carlsberg Pivo Denmark Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Bottle, bought in Denmark. Golden pils, moderate head. Good Saaz aroma. Light bodied, but decent bitterness in the aftertaste. An ABV of 5% would be more appropriate. The Czechs do it better, but all in all this is not a bad try of Carlsberg. A beer for the summer days.

4596 Mikkeller Nelson Sauvignon Denmark Belgian Strong Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Bottle, kindly shared by my beerpal Christian. Deep golden colour, moderate white head. Spicy aroma of brettanomyces and Nelson Sauvin hops. Effervescent spicy flavour, notes of gooseberries, white grapes and brettanomyces.

4597 Ribe Jubilæums Ale Denmark Spiced Beer 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, kindly shared by my beerpal Jan Magnus. ABV is 6.0%. In addition to barley malts and hops it is brewed with rye malts, wormwood, juniper berries, rowan berries and liquorice root. Deep golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma of caramel with some unusual spicy and herbal notes, hints of berries. Fairly dry flavour, moderate notes of spices and rowanberries. Decent beer, but with all these interesting ingredients I kind of expected a stronger herbal "punch" in the flavour.

4598 HaandBryggeriet Merry NewYear (2008) Denmark English Barleywine 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, UK style barleywine, vintage 2008, kindly shared by my beerpal Christian. ABV is 10.6%. Beautiful ruby colour, big off-white to beige head. Strong vinous and oaky aroma, notes of dark dried fruits and caramel. Sweet flavour but not extreme, notes of dark dried fruits and oak again, hoppy bitterness in the finish. A good beer from the (now sadly defunct) Danish HaandBryggeriet.

500 ml bottle, kindly shared by my beerpal Christian. ABV is 11%. Brew #20, "brewed 2006, bottled 2007, drinkable from 2008, good at least until 2012"". Very dark ruby colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Lovely aroma of dark dried fruits (incl. raisins), oak, dark malts, vinous notes. The flavour has much the same elements as the aroma, with tolerable hops in the finish.
