2451 Flying Dog In-Heat Wheat United States Hefeweizen 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

355 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.7%. Also available in some Norwegian grocery stores. Hazy pale golden colour, big white head. Typical hefeweizen aroma of ripe bananas and cloves. The flavour also has notes of ripe bananas and cloves, medium sweet, soft mouthfeel, very drinkable, low bitterness. A good hefeweizen - no more, no less.

2452 Flying Dog Raging Bitch Belgian IPA United States Imperial IPA 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

355 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgård, Denmark. ABV is 8.3%, IBU 60. Clear orange colour, big off-white head. Lovely strong aroma of fruity and piney American hops, notes of oranges and slightly caramellized orange marmalade. The flavour is a hoppy explosion from start to finish, fruity (orange marmalade) first, very bitter in the end. There is a considerable malty sweetness that stands up to the bitterness. I don’t get many "Belgian" notes out of this "Belgian IPA", it is all very American to me.

2453 Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA United States IPA 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

12 fl. oz. bottle, now available in Norway at Vinmonopolet. ABV from 2008 is 7.1%. Clear orange colour, moderate white head. Pleasant fruity and sweetish aroma of American hops, distinct notes of citrus and blackcurrant leaves, also moderate notes of malts and toffee. The flavour is distinctly hoppy throughout (as expected from an American IPA), but the hoppiness is not overdone, which means that the bitterness is firm but not harsh. Furthermore, unlike many other IPAs this one is not too sweet, and seems pretty well balanced altogether. Definitely a beer I’ll buy again.

2454 Flying Dog Wild Dog Collaborator Doppelbock United States Doppelbock 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bottle, ABV 8.3%, at RBNAG 2009 in Vatlandsvåg. Dark brown colour, orange in the highlights. Low off-white head. Sweetish very malty and sugary aroma, hints of oak. The flavour is very fruity for a doppelbock, but also malty and somewhat sugary, with a noticeable bitterness in the finish.

2455 Flying Dog Wild Dog Dog Schwarz United States Schwarzbier 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Corked "champagne" bottle, as Flying Dog Schwarz Smoked Double Lager, ABV 7.8%. IBU 25. Kindly shared by gunnar. Black colour, low tan head. Moderate aroma of dark malts and smoke. Very smoky flavour, the smoke dominates a bit too much for my taste.

2456 Flying Monkeys Invictus Canada Imperial Stout 4.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Shared 473 ml bottle, as a nightcap at Bryne tasting. ABV is 18.4%. Pitch black colour, short-lived brown head. Intense aroma of roast malts, molasses, fusel alcohols, bourbon, caramel. Warming mouthfeel. Intense and sweet flavour with the same elements as the aroma, but less fusel. Rich and soothing. Jolly good.

2459 Föroya Bjór Black Sheep Faroe Islands Pale Lager 3.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

On tap at Hotel Føroyar, Torshavn. Beautiful chestnut colour, moderate off-white head, some lacing. Moderate but nice aroma of malts and caramel. Flavour of caramel and diacetyl, but not too sweet, with the "house character" metallic and slightly sourish finish.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

On tap in the Faroe Islands tent at the ONS 2008, Stavanger. Served too cold (= minimal taste). Amber colour, low head. Moderately malty aroma and flavour, hints of caramel. Not offensive, but boring.

2461 Föroya Bjór Ekta Maltøl Faroe Islands Reduced Alcohol 2.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

500 ml clear plastic bottle, from a grocery store in Vestmanna. No ABV mentioned on the label, and yeast is not mentioned as an ingredient, but if the locals say it is 1.8%, so be it. At least it contains malts and Bavarian hops (and sugar). Dark brown colour, minimal beige head. Strong sweetish aroma of malts and caramel, a hint of smoke and seaweed. The flavour is very malty and very sweet, like a Danish hvidtøl, with loads of caramel. Good enough to drink if you have a sweet tooth, and have to drive ...

2462 Föroya Bjór Green Islands Stout Faroe Islands Stout 3.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Moderate aroma of dark malts, hints of chocolate and mild coffee. Light bodied, thin mouthfeel for its strength. Lacks the full and creamy mouthfeel of a good stout. The flavour is quite dry, notes of roasted malts and thin coffee. The dusty bitterness in the finish is too moderate. Drinkable of course, but very far from the most impressive stouts I’ve had.

2463 Föroya Bjór Gull Faroe Islands Pale Lager 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. Ingredients include cane sugar and ascorbic acid. Typical pilsener pale golden colour, big to moderate white head. Fairly fresh and nice aroma of sweetish pilsener malts and grassy and herbal Hallertauer hops. The flavour has a moderate fruity sweetness and tolerable hops throughout. Not exceptional in any way, but much better than I feared.

2464 Föroya Bjór Jolabryggj Faroe Islands Lager 2.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

330 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgård, Denmark. ABV is 5.8%. Clear deep golden to brown colour, big white head. Weird aroma of "dusty" malts, loads of silage and grassy hops, a hint of caramel. Plenty of carbonation in the mouth. The flavour is medium sweet, with a moderate acidity, hints of caramel and grass. Not very good.

330 ml bottle, from a grocery store in Torshavn. ABV is 2.8%. Golden colour, pours fizzy with a short-lived white head. Very moderate grainy aroma. Bland and boring grainy flavour, watery mouthfeel, minimal hops, sourish finish. Not much to make you happy here.

2466 Föroya Bjór Organic Light Faroe Islands Reduced Alcohol 1.5

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml bottle, from a grocery store in Torshavn. ABV is 2.8%. Golden colour, pours fizzy with a short-lived head. Aroma of unhopped pilsener wort, notes of grain and cooked vegetables. Fizzy and watery mouthfeel. The flavour is grainy and dull, hardly any hops, sourish and metallic finish. One to forget.

2467 Föroya Bjór Paskabryggj Faroe Islands Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.2

330 ml bottle, sixpack from the brewery store in Klaksvik. ABV is 5.8%. Deep golden to amber colour, moderate white head. Aroma of caramel and citrus. Smooth mouthfeel. The flavour has notes of malts and some caramel, but is not very sweet. Very moderately hopped. Clearly drinkable, but not particularly interesting.

2468 Föroya Bjór Pilsnar Faroe Islands Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 2.0

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

On tap in the Faroe Islands tent at the ONS 2008, Stavanger. Served ice cold (= minimal taste). Golden colour, low head. Moderate sweetish aroma. Fizzy mouthfeel. Bland pale lager flavour, nothing particularly offensive, but nothing to make you happy either. The Faroese singer Hanus G. Johansen made my day, the beer did not.

2469 Föroya Bjór Portari Faroe Islands Baltic Porter 3.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, bought in Bier Spezi Hamburg. My first Faroese beer. Closest style for this bottom fermented beer would be Baltic Porter, but it's a rather poor example of the style. Deep reddish brown colour, large light tan head. Very moderate aroma, some lightly roasted malts, hints of plums. One-dimensional flavour of roasted malts and coffee with a strange sourish and slightly metallic finish. Coffee and sourish metal (does that make sense? - battery acid?) in the aftertaste too. Weird. No masterpiece this one, but they have been trying.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, at Etika, Torshavn. ABV is 5.8%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black. Large creamy tan head. Moderate but nice spicy aroma, also notes of caramel. Smooth and pleasant mouthfeel. Malty flavour, notes of mild spices, hints of caramel, not too sweet. The best beer I’ve had from Føroya Bjor so far.

2471 Föroya Bjór Sct. Brigid Blond Faroe Islands Belgian Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. This might be the first beer I’ve had with angelica as one of the ingredients. (In the Nordic countries, this herb was not uncommon as a flavour ingredient in farmhouse beer and spirits in the olden days.) Hazy pale golden colour, big white head. Interesting and pleasant aroma of herbs, spices and Belgian ale yeast. Light bodied. Fairly dry flavour with moderate notes of herbs and spices, but the mouthfeel is too thin. Slightly fruity / acidic finish, very moderate bitterness. Could have been better, but well worth sampling.

330 ml bottle, a gift. ABV is 5.8%. Deep golden to amber colour, moderate white head. Decent aroma of grassy and herbal hops (Hallertauer), hints of syrup and caramel. Refreshing flavour with a moderate malty sweetness and decent Hallertauer hops throughout. Much better than I feared.

2473 Föroya Bjór X-mas 1888 Faroe Islands Spiced Beer 3.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgård, Denmark. ABV is 5.8%. Copper coloured beer, big to moderate off-white head with an orangey hue. Strong sweetish aroma with loads of Christmas spices (nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom etc.), nearly "gløgg" (=mulled and spiced wine). Too much carbonation in the mouth. The flavour is not as sweet as I feared, but has loads of the above Christmas spices. Definitely drinkable, but not what you would call "well balanced". The finish is a bit "empty", could use more hops.

330 ml clear bottle, at Etika, Torshavn. ABV is 4.6%. Rosé coloured beer, moderate pinkish white head. Fresh aroma of rhubarb and citrus. Light bodied. Refreshing flavour of rhubarb and hints of citrus, not sweet, but the hops are too moderate. Goes well with sushi though.

2475 Fosters Lager Australia Pale Lager 1.6

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

(330 ml bottle, ABV 4.5%): Light golden colour, large head that doesn't last long. Initial fresh Heineken-like aroma that doesn't linger, bland watery flavour, aftertaste has a little strange and unpleasant bitterness in the end. So boring they could have named it "Neville Chamberlain".
