1426 | Carlsberg Carls Dark | Denmark | Dunkel / Dark Lager | 2.9
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5 (330 ml bottle, bought in Denmark). I knew Carlsberg added pure refined sugar syrup to this beer (it’s on the label), and that made me sceptical and maybe a little prejudiced even before opening the bottle. Beautiful copper colour, moderate head. Aroma has a nice maltiness which unfortunately is overwhelmed by sugary and syrupy notes. Flavour is not quite as sweet as I feared, still something is wrong: the syrup, no doubt. To think that Carlsberg actually retired Tuborg Rød and introduced THIS in stead ..... Idiots! |

1428 | Carlsberg Carls Lager | Denmark | Vienna / Amber Lager | 3.0
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 Bottles, bought in Denmark. Historically interesting recipe, but this is not a beer I'd choose for daily consumption. Rerate: I generally like Münchener dunkels (which is what Carls Lager is supposed to be), but this one is too bland, despite some caramel in aroma and flavour. Would profit on a higher ABV. |

1430 | Carlsberg Carls Porter (Gammel Porter/Imperial Stout) | Denmark | Baltic Porter | 4.7
Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10 After a rough start, this beer is pure velvet - sweet, robust, rich, malty and roasted with lots of coffee in the flavour. Nice bitterness in the aftertaste. Just the right strength. A beer I'll never grow tired of - one of my definite favourites. |

1432 | Carlsberg Christmas Brew | Norway | Lager | 2.2
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4 500 ml can. ABV is 4.6%. Deep golden colour, large head. Weak sweetish and "unfresh" aroma with notes of boiled vegetables, hints of cinnamon. Moderate carbonation. The flavour is like one of Ringnes’ other uninteresting and sweetish "modern" lagers, with some cinnamon added. Drinkable, but not a beer that will bring much happiness to your Christmas, that’s for sure. |

1433 | Carlsberg CopenHagen 56°N | Lithuania | Light / Lite Lager | 1.3
Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 2 330 ml clear bottle, arbitrary sample. Extremely pale yellow colour, moderate white head. Sweetish and sugary aroma, some grassy notes. Nearly void of flavour, just a little sweetness. No aftertaste (at least no GOOD aftertaste), as intended by the brewers. Who the hell LIKES this beer? Calling it "piss" would be an insult to any active human kidney. |

1434 | Carlsberg Crown | Denmark | Strong Lager | 2.7
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6 Bottle, bought in Denmark. "Danish malts, GLUCOSE SYRUP, Tasmanian hops" .... hmmm. Carlsberg’s attempt to make a beer with champagne-like qualities ... hmmm - I’m not a big fan of real champagne (price considered), but I’d definitely prefer real champagne for a celebration, if Carlsberg Crown were the best beer on offer. Fruity but not very strong aroma, bubbly/fizzy fruity flavour, not offensive but far from interesting. Alcohol is well hidden (behind what??). I am not a monarchist, but I think the happy couple deserved something better than this. |

1435 | Carlsberg Elephant Beer | Denmark | Strong Lager | 3.3
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 A strong lager with an aquired taste. Not bad! - at least better than its reputation. Great accompaniment with a Danish "sildemad". I've had this one mainly from can or fresh bottles in Denmark, thus avoiding the skunkiness some of our American friends report of. Rerate German brewed version, (brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot), ABV 7.5%: The extra 0.3% alcohol certainly doesn't bring anything good to the beer. 7.2% is plenty for a beer with a body as light as this. Stick to the Danish original! |

1436 | Carlsberg Hvede (Wheat) | Denmark | Hefeweizen | 3.9
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 Draught at a Turkish restaurant in Odense (had it also later on two other occasions in Denmark). Served too cold. Surprisingly dark colour, orange to brown, cloudy. Moderate but nice hefe aroma and flavour, tolerable hops. Went nicely with the Turkish buffet. Pleasant cloves aftertaste. |

1437 | Carlsberg Ice | Denmark | Pale Lager | 1.4
Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3 Bottle, at the Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen. Like all pale "ice" swill lagers: They are brewed to be very drinkable for people who really don't like beer at all. Carlsberg Ice is not even the "best" of the lot. For all people who actually LIKE beer: Avoid the "ice" swill style by all means, and Carlsberg Ice in particular. |

1438 | Carlsberg Lager (Export) | Denmark | Lager | 3.0
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 "Probably the best beer in the world" - NOT!! Over-hyped and over-advertized international lager. The versions sold in Denmark and Norway are a little weaker (4.6 - 4.8%). Must admit I used to have a soft spot for this beer when served fresh in Copenhagen. It's really just an average pale lager, unoffensive and drinkable but not very special in any way. |

1439 | Carlsberg Light | Denmark | Reduced Alcohol | 1.9
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4 Typical "light" (which in Denmark and Norway previously always meant "low alcohol") beer. Little more to add. A 2.5% version was made for Norway. Golden colour, moderate head. A very watered down pale lager, but with some malt and very moderate hops in aroma and flavour, not totally undrinkable when you have to drive afterwards. |

1440 | Carlsberg Lite | Denmark | Light / Lite Lager | 1.7
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3 500 ml can, "license brewed" in Norway by Ringnes (which is 100% Carlsberg owned). ABV is 4.1%. Pale yellow colour, big to moderate white head. Moderate carbonation in the glass. Sweetish aroma, notes of candy, grass, grain and cooked vegetables. The very bland flavour has some very moderate malts and not much else, hardly any hops in the "empty" finish. Not awful enough to be undrinkable, but utterly boring. |

1442 | Carlsberg Non-Alcoholic | Sweden | Reduced Alcohol | 2.1
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 3 330 ml green bottle, from REMA 1000. ABV is 0.5%. Crystal clear pale yellow colour, moderate but lasting white head. Heineken-like "skunky" and grassy aroma, which is a good thing, compared to other n/a beers. Sweetish notes of pilsener wort too. Thin and watery mouthfeel, as expected. Very moderate flavour, a little sweetness, a little hops. The good thing is: there are no really offensive off-flavours. If you have to drive, this beer might help you avoid dying of thirst. |

1443 | Carlsberg Nordic 0.0% Pilsner | Denmark | Reduced Alcohol | 2.4
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5 330 ml can, from BilkaToGo, Skalborg. ABV is 0.0%. Clear golden colour, moderate to small white head. Citric aroma, a hint of plums too. Citric and thin mouthfeel. The flavour is citric and fairly dry, very moderate hops. None of the unpleasant off-flavours that many n/a beers have. |

1444 | Carlsberg Nordic Alkoholfri Ale | Denmark | Reduced Alcohol | 1.6
Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 2 330 ml can, from BilkaToGo, Skalborg. ABV is 0.5%. Clear deep golden to brown colour, moderate to small white head. Aroma of malts, wort and bread. The flavour is first citric, then bready, with metallic bittering hops in the finish. Won't buy again. |

1446 | Carlsberg Pivo | Denmark | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.1
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7 Bottle, bought in Denmark. Golden pils, moderate head. Good Saaz aroma. Light bodied, but decent bitterness in the aftertaste. An ABV of 5% would be more appropriate. The Czechs do it better, but all in all this is not a bad try of Carlsberg. A beer for the summer days. |

1447 | Carlsberg Semper Ardens Abbey Ale | Denmark | Abbey Dubbel | 4.2
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9 (700 ml bottle, bought in Denmark). Copper colour, slightly hazy, moderate head that doesn’t last very long. Lovely aroma of dark fruits and spices. Malty and slightly spicy flavour, could have been more complex but is still very good. Pleasant aftertaste. They have used Saazer hops for this beer, nothing wrong with that, but additional hop varieties would probably have brought the beer closer to "perfect". Still, quality is of course lightyears ahead of what most people know as "Carlsberg". |

1448 | Carlsberg Semper Ardens Christmas Ale | Denmark | Strong Ale | 3.2
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 (700 ml bottle, bought in Denmark). Murky brown colour, large tan head. Surprisingly weak initial aroma - Hallertauer with faint notes of malts, spices and brown sugar. Improves a bit as the beer warms up. Flavour is much stronger, fuller and richer - but unfortunately also too sweet. Spices (coriander, aniseed, cardamom and more?), molasses and plenty of malts. The brewers have obviously used far too much brown sugar. They have also missed the target completely with their choice of hops - Hallertauer Mittelfrüh in a strong Belgian ale, WTF? I’m not a hops expert, but this beer obviously needs hops with more character, and in larger quantities. And PLEASE, less sugar to get rid of that syrupy mouthfeel!! Acceptable as a dessert beer, but not with the main Christmas meal. Incredibly, Carlsberg claim (on the rear label) that this beer has a "DRY(!!) and light ACIDIC structure". Who wrote that? Winnie the Pooh? Better luck next year, Carlsberg! |

1449 | Carlsberg Semper Ardens Criollo Stout | Denmark | Stout | 4.0
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 (700 ml bottle). Pours very dark with a moderate head. Aroma and flavour of liquorice, dark chocolate and roasted malts. A bit too much liquorice in my book. Still, this is a very good stout, but not a taste experience that much better than Carls Porter - not enough to live up to the price difference IMO. I guess some of the point with the Semper Ardens range is that Carlsberg want to show the world: "Hey, we can brew good beer too - but that is VERY expensive!" Price aside, you have to give them props for trying. After they killed Wiibroe Imperial Stout Porter, Carls Porter is the only surviving moderately priced quality Carlsberg beer - innovation is reserved for the Semper Ardens range, just pay and be happy! |

1450 | Carlsberg Semper Ardens Easter Brew | Denmark | Bock | 3.1
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 660 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. ABV is 6.5%. Allegedly a Carlsberg recipe from 1907. Hops are Spalt and Saaz. Beautiful amber to copper colour, big off-white head with an orangey hue. Flavour of over-boiled vegetables, baby porridge and caramel. The flavour has notes of malts and caramel, but is not too sweet. As the beer warms up a little, a very moderate fruitiness comes through. However, the amount of hops used is far too moderate to make this a really great drinking experience. The beer is drinkable though, but I expect more from a Semper Ardens brew. |
