6051 Søgaard Fort Dansborg IPA Denmark IPA 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, bought in Denmark (Føtex or SuperBest, Aalborg). ABV is 6.6%. Cloudy dark brown colour, big to moderate creamy head. Lovely aroma of American hops, notes of citrus, fir tree forest and flowers, also notes of caramel malts. Refreshing flavour, the hops dominate with notes of resin and grapefruit, but there is also a noticeable sweetness of caramel malts. Some hints of roastiness and chocolate too. Fairly bitter finish. Good beer!

6052 Søgaard Gækkebryg Denmark American Pale Ale 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Festival. Served too warm, but I should not complain, as it was a free sample. Deep golden colour, huge white head. Floral and mild hops in both aroma and flavour. Drinkable, but not remarkable.

6053 Søgaard Madam Weizen Denmark Hefeweizen 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, bought at Føtex or SuperBest, Aalborg. ABV is 4.8%. Hazy pale golden colour, big to moderate white head. Typical hefeweizen aroma of ripe bananas, bubblegum and cloves. The mouthfeel is a bit thin. The flavour has first a slight acidity, then the usual h.w. characteristics of cloves and citrus, but not as pronounced as in the best beers of its kind. Some "dusty" notes too, bland finish.

6054 Søgaard Stout Noire Denmark Stout 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, at the Dalane Brygghus restaurant in Egersund. ABV is 6.3%. Includes some peat smoked malts. Some sediment in the bottle. Black colour, big tan head - good looking. Aroma of liquorice, chocolate and coffee. Roasty flavour with notes of peat smoke, English liquorice, tar and coffee. Good stuff!

500 ml bottle, bought at Føtex or SuperBest, Aalborg. ABV is 5.1%. Hazy orange to amber colour, big cream-coloured head. Lovely aroma of citrus and tropical fruits (Cascade hops). The mouthfeel is maybe a bit thin. The flavour has notes of fruity American hops, but the grapefruity bitterness is rather moderate. Fairly dry beer.

6056 Søgaards Jomfruhumle Denmark Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Sample on tap at the brewpub. Typical pilsener colour. Moderate flowery aroma with hints of honey. This is a light bodied and pleasant pilsener, amount of hops seems just right.

6057 Søgaards Julebuk Denmark Bock 2.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Sample on tap at the brewpub, on the day of its release for the Christmas season 2005. I think the waiter might again have screwed up the samples here ... Golden colour, much paler than the description. Hints of vomit in the aroma, not very pleasant. Tastes like a reasonably hoppy pale bock / premium lager, nothing Christmasy about it.

6058 Søgaards Klosterbryg Denmark Dunkel / Dark Lager 3.7

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Rerate, 500 ml bottle, bought at Føtex or SuperBest, Aalborg. ABV is 5.5%. Dark reddish brown colour, big cream-coloured head. Aroma of spices, malts and caramel. The flavour is malty with plenty of caramel, moderate spicy notes, hints of honey. Low bitterness, the finish is a bit bland. Still a drinkable beer. Original rating:Sample + full size glass on tap at the brewpub. I think the waiter must have mixed up things here - the sample was deep golden and spicy, while the full size was copper coloured (like their IPA), hoppier and less spicy. Comments sample: Aroma of incense and Christmas spices (ginger, cardamom, cloves). Spicy sweet flavour, unusual, interesting.

6059 Søgaards Naverbryg Denmark Vienna / Amber Lager 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Sample on tap at the brewpub. Amber colour. Very moderate aroma, hints of honey and caramel. Just a little fuller mouthfeel and flavour than their Jomfruhumle, seems reasonably well hopped.

6060 Søgaards Shotgun IPA Denmark IPA 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Sample on tap at the brewpub. Also known as "No. 1 IPA", waiter said it’s the same beer. Menu said it was "brewed by the craft brewers of Skagen". The waiter might have screwed up the samples, the one I got was deep copper coloured. Moderate hoppy aroma with notes of caramel. Flavour is reasonably hoppy but not really impressive. Relatively dry.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Sample on tap at the brewpub. Black colour, no head, moderate carbonation. Roasty aroma with notes of tar, liquorice / aniseed dominates. Distinct heavy roastiness from start to finish, bitter and dry, notes of strong coffee. Mouthfeel could have been fuller.

750 ml bottle, unlabeled, many thanks to yngwie! Orange to amber colour, huge off-white head. Lovely hoppy aroma (Styrian Goldings), notes of spices, hints of oak. The flavour is fairly sweet and fruity with notes of oranges, apricot, brown sugar and spices (notably coriander). Some bitterness in the finish. Good beer!

6064 Søkildegaard TV2 Øst Denmark Brown Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Sampled bottle, RBNAG 2007 in Grimstad. TV2 Øst Bryg No. 17, ABV was 7%. Dark brown colour. Malty sweet aroma and flavour, hints of oak. (AFAIK, this beer was brewed when a regional TV channel, TV2 Øst, made a program about this tiny micro brewery.)

6065 Sørlands Julebrygg Norway Vienna / Amber Lager 2.5

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

(330 ml bottle). A "klasse D" Yule brew for the grocery store market, made by Arendals Brewery, which is one of the few local breweries in the Ringnes portfolio that hasn't been shut down (yet...). This beer can't make anyone happy, colour is transparent brown, aroma and flavour have some malts and caramel and are not offensive - but watery, watery, watery! Just too little of everything you want from a Christmas/Yule brew. Metallic bitterness in the finish.

6066 Spar Cerveza Spain Pale Lager 2.1

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

330 ml can, bought in a SPAR store in Tenerife. ABV is 4.8%. Ingredients include maize and stabilizer E-405. Very pale straw coloured beer, big to moderate white head. Sweetish, grassy and dusty aroma, hints of maize, not good. Boring flavour, "dusty" with just a little hops, but not totally undrinkable when cold.

6067 Spar Cerveza Sin Spain Reduced Alcohol 1.6

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 2 | Mouthfeel: 2 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

330 ml can, in Spain. ABV is less than 1%. Golden colour, moderate white head. The usual sickly n/a beer aroma of maize, over-boiled vegetables and stale grain. The flavour is somewhat better than the aroma - a boring pale lager flavour without being totally undrinkable.

6068 SPAR Pilsner (Denmark) Denmark Pale Lager 2.0

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

Danish discount pils, brewed for the Spar grocery store chain. Can''t tell the difference between this beer and Star Pilsner + Neptun Pilsner. Are they possibly the same beer with different labels? Anyway, all of them are drinkable only when you''re broke and price is all that matters. (Yes, that HAS happened to me!)

(500 ml bottle, European version, bought in Denmark). Pale golden colour, like a pils. Good to moderate head. Pleasant fruity aroma. Flavour is smooth, mellow and clean, hops are subdued. Easy drinking. Nice beer, but hardly worth a fest in its own right.

500 ml bottle, at a pub in the Nordstan shopping centre, Göteborg, as "Spaten München - Original Munich beer". ABV is 5.2%. Pale golden colour, moderate head. Pleasant aroma of flowery hops. The flavour is fairly bland and boring, but there are no unpleasant off-flavours.

6071 Spectrum Black Buffle United Kingdom Stout 4.2

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Cask conditioned at the 32nd Cambridge Beer Festival, gravity dispense. (Not mentioned in the festival programme, as far as I could see - must have been brought in last minute as an extra beer.) Pitch black colour, nearly impenetrable for light. Some natural carbonation. Dark chocolate aroma with some roastiness. Smooth roasty flavour with coffee and chocolate notes. Medium dry. Nice.

Cask conditioned at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004. Black (= very dark brown) colour. EXTREMELY fruity aroma and flavour for a stout. Notes of dark chocolate and coffee too. Interesting beer, very good. And it’s vegan, for those who care.

6073 Spencer Trappist Ale United States Belgian Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, from Det Bette Ølhus, Aalbæk. ABV is 6.5%. Muddy brownish-golden colour, moderate to small white head. Aroma of malts, old jam and mild spices. Soft carbonation. The flavour has malts and Belgian ale yeast, peppery notes of mild spices, hints of dried dark fruits, there is a slight sweetness but the beer is quite refreshing. Would buy again.

Shared 330 ml bottle. Golden colour, white head. The aroma has slightly stale orange marmalade and piney hops. Distinct spicy, piney and bitter hops in the flavour. The malts in the background are a bit too sweet.

6075 Spendrups Fifty Fifty Sweden Scottish Ale 2.5

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

(500 ml can, bought in Sweden). This is a 50/50 mix between an ale and a lager. Golden colour, low head. Hardly any aroma at all. Tastes more like a lager than an ale, not very pleasant bitterness.
