500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. Deep copper colour, large beige head. Intense aroma of red fruits, dried fruits and jam / marmalade, also notes of cloves, oak and sherry. Flavour is moderately malty, slightly acidic with some vinous qualities, red fruits, caramel and rye bread in the background. Moderate carbonation, soft mouthfeel, smooth and pleasant to drink. A very nice rye beer.

500 ml bottle, bought in Bier Spezi Hamburg. ABV is 7.5%. Reddish amber colour, large orange to light tan head. Surprisingly alcoholic aroma, elements of molasses, caramel and syrup, hints of dried dark fruits, port wine and oak. Flavour is also rather alcoholic, malty sweet (a little too sweet for me) with plenty of caramel and molasses, a herbal spiciness and moderate hops in the finish. Not nearly as good as the much darker Weltenburger Kloster Asam Bock, but still a very powerful beer in any way. Definitely a "winter warmer".

500 ml bottle, at Cardinal, Stavanger. ABV is 5.2%. Pale yellow colour, crystal clear like the name says. Large to moderate head. Typical weissbier aroma, fruity with bananas and cloves, but the the aroma is not as strong as you’ll get from a hefe-w. Crisp and spritzy mouthfeel. Moderate cloves and tolerable hops in the flavour, but boring compared to the hefe. Why filter away the goodies? Short aftertaste.

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. According to the label, ABV is 4.8%, brewery website says 4.7%. Golden colour, minimal white head. Nice aroma of Saaz hops, floral, fruity and herbal notes. Minimal carbonation in the glass. The flavour is very sweet (too sweet) and sugary for a pilsener, notes of fruits and herbs too, decent hoppy bittterness in the finish. The excessive sweetness and minimal carbonation might be due to a production error, the beer has been retired from Vinmonopolet before it came for sale there. Still drinkable as it is.

(330 ml bottle). Beautiful deep amber colour, just slightly hazy. Great head. INTENSE aroma of spiced alcohol (nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon), hints of ammonium chloride too. Flavour is malty and spicy, but not as intense as you'd expect from the aroma. Sweetness seems just right. Aftertaste is good, but a bit short. An interesting beer, like so many Belgians.

330 ml bottle, in France. Deep brown colour, decent tan head. Flavour is malty with some caramel, fairly sweet. Smooth and nice to drink. Hardly any bitterness at all.

August 2014: Shared 330 ml bottle at local tasting. ABV is 9.6%. Dark brown colour, moderate beige head. Intense aroma of oak, molasses and alcohol. Distinctly oaky flavour too, but not as heavy and sweet as I feared. Warming mouth- and throatfeel. Not bad.

February 2021: 440 ml can, from Seven Cellars. ABV is 8.3%. Opaque dirty yellow-ish colour with yeast floaties, small white head. Aroma of citrus, tropical fruits and spruce. Rich mouthfeel. Fruity and medium sweet flavour, plenty of citrus and tropical fruits, hints of sprucetips and pine needles, but the bitterness is moderate.

Shared large corked bottle, brought home from France by my son Steinar. ABV is 4.5%. Golden colour, pours very fizzy with a large but short-lived head. Strong aroma of cider apples and oak, hints of sulphites. Moderate carbonation in the glass. Medium sweet flavour of cider apples and eating apples, hints of oak and sulphites. Père Magloire may be best known internationally for their Calvados, but apparently they make decent ciders too.

500 ml bottle, from LIDL Norway. ABV here is 4.7%, in Germany it is 4.9%. Very pale golden colour, moderate head. Sweetish aroma, some fruit and cooked vegetables, some grass too. Very light bodied, thin mouthfeel, minimal malts, but a tolerable hoppy bitterness, which is not quite as metallic as in most other LIDL beers. Easy drinking, not offensive.

330 ml green bottle, as Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%, from Coop Extra, Tau. Crystal clear pale golden colour, small white head. "Skunky" Heineken-like aroma, also sweetish notes of wort and baby porridge. Citric mouthfeel. The flavour has some citrus, and metallic bittering hops in the finish.

330 ml clear bottle, as Peroni Nastro Azzurro Stile Capri, from Helgø Meny Stokka. ABV is 4.2%. Clear pale golden colour, moderate to small white head. Aroma much like a typical n/a beer, just a hint of lemon extract. More distinct lemon in the flavour, not too sweet and kind of refreshing, but there is hardly any hop bitterness. Swill.

Pale golden colour, light bodied, an average / run of the mill lager in every sense. Nothing offensive about it, but Peroni Nastro Azzurro is better. It's so average it could be named "Neville Chamberlain" without bringing shame to the name.

500 ml brown bottle, as Perry's Somerset Morgan Single Variety Cider, from The British Corner Shop. ABV is 6.0%. Very pale straw colour, pours sparkling with a small white head. Pleasant and fresh aroma of apples with some tannins, hints of honey, flowers, oak and sulphites. Moderate carbonation in the mouth. Medium sweet flavour of apples, moderate tannins, hints of oak and sulphites.

500 ml bottle, from The British Corner Shop. ABV is 6.1%. Pale straw colour, pours moderately sparkling with a small and shortlived white head. Pleasant aroma of Redstreak apples, hints of honey, flowers, oak and moderate sulphites. Slightly sweet but still fairly crisp flavour, notes of apples with some tannins, oak and sulphites.

June 2016: 330 ml unlabelled bottle at Mikkeller Bar, Aarhus. Brown color, large white head. Aroma and flavour very much like the ordinary Orval, with "farmhouse" and "spicy" notes, distinct hops. It is quite impressive that so much flavour can be put into a beer of this moderate ABV.
