Cask conditioned at the 32nd Cambridge Beer Festival, gravity dispense. Black colour, low head. Roasty aroma, hints of dark chocolate. Flavour is decidedly roasty with coffee notes, quite dry. Not very complex, but beats Guinness any day! Rerate: 500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.0%. Black colour, big and creamy brown head. Pleasant aroma of dark roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate, hints of smoke and tar. The flavour has roasted malts, mild coffee and dark bitter chocolate, some fruit in the finish, with a roasty bitterness and moderate hops in the aftertaste. Good beer, but would probably profit from a higher ABV.

500 ml bottle, from Gulating Ølutsalg, Stavanger. ABV is 3.7%. Crystal clear golden colour, moderate white head. Disappointing aroma of wort and dust. Light bodied as expected. Citric flavour, with a sharp and slightly metallic bitterness. Very far from Orkney's best ale.

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.0%. Crystal clear pale golden colour, big to moderate white head. Moderate aroma of fruity hops, hint of apricots. Light bodied and refreshing: The flavour has distinct fruity hops on a moderately sweet bakground of malts, ending in a well balanced resinous and grapefruity bitterness. A nice little summer ale this one.

500 ml bottle, from Coop Mega Kleppe. ABV is 4.5%. Beautiful clear copper colour, large to moderate head, slightly off-white. Aroma according to the commercial description: "sweet nutty malt, cedarwood and dark fruits" - I agree! Flavour / "on the palate": again referring to the commercial description: "Rich nutty malt, sweet smooth blackcurrant and lemon mousse leading to blackcurrant leaf and wood notes with a dry woody, spicy nutmeg finish." I agree again! - but I am not too happy with the woody part. Still a fairly decent beer.

500 ml bottle, bought at Peckham’s, Glasgow. ABV is 3.8%. Amber colour, large off-white head, leaves a nice lacing. Malty aroma with notes of caramel, some fruit too. The flavour has a decent balance between malts and hops, notes of toffee and moderate fruit, hoppy finish. Quite good.

Cask (return system) at The Abbotsford, Edinburgh. Copper to chestnut coloured beer, moderate head. Lovely malty aroma with loads of butterscotch. The flavour is malty with plenty of caramel and some butterscotch, low bitterness. Rerate: 500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.0%. Copper to mahogany coloured beer, big off-white head. Pleasant aroma of lightly toasted malts, caramel and floral and fruity hops. The flavour is first very malt-accented with caramel and biscuits, then spicy and moderately fruity hops come through, leaving a nice bitterness in the aftertaste. Definitely a good Scottish ale this one.

Flavour is spicy, oaky, malty, chocolate, there’s vinous qualities (old sherry, marsala). Nutty / dusty hops finish. A great beer! Rerate, 330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.5%. Dark ruby coloured beer, low off-white head. Nice vinous aroma with notes of dark dried fruits, hints of oak. The flavour is rich, sweet and malty, notes of figs and molasses. Spicy hops and nuts in the finish. Not quite as complex as the cask version, but still a good beer.

(330 ml bottle, ABV 6,2%). This fine beer is cloudy deep golden with an enormous creamy head. It has an intense, overwhelming but lovely aroma of ensilage, horse stable, leather and spicy fruit cake. The flavour is complex and spicy, hops stand out, the aftertaste is dry but could have lasted a little longer. Still, this is clearly a world class beer. Definitely moreish!

355 ml can, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 8.2%. Cloudy / opaque yellow to orange colour, moderate white head. Lovely aroma of citrus fruits / Citra hops, also notes of spruce, hints of tropical fruits. Medium sweet flavour with the same elements, and a decent and resinous hop bitterness.

Aroma of pine, grapefruit, marmalade, malts and dust. Citric and piney flavour, not too sweet, well balanced grapefruity and resinous bitterness in the finish. Enjoyable beer.

Strong aroma of American hops, fruity notes, hints of pine and marmalade. The flavour has also loads of hops, but they are fairly well balanced with the malts. There is a substantial bitterness in the finish and long aftertaste, with piney and grapefruity notes.

355 ml can, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 6.5%. Very dark brown to black colour, small tan head. Strong aroma of coconuts, chocolate, vanilla and suntan oil. The flavour is not very sweet, but has plenty of coconut, chocolate and vanilla. Moderate hops. The guys at Oskar Blues Brewery have the nerve to call this an "Irish Porter" - I had no idea that coconuts grow in Ireland, but what do I know. The beer is well worth sampling anyway.

355 ml can, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.8%. Clear golden colour, large white head. Aroma of yuzu fruit and other citrus zest. The slightly dry flavour has also notes of yuzu and citrussy hops with a hint of pine, also a hint of blueberries. Medium bitter finish.

Excellent complex aroma of American hops, notes of pine, oranges, grapefruit, tropical fruits. The flavour has loads of American hops from start to finish, with fruity (grapefruity), piney and resinous notes, but it is not too bitter (despite respectable 85 IBUs), as the hoppiness is nicely balanced by a sweetness of malts and orange marmalade. Resinous bitter aftertaste.

355 ml can at Cardinal, Stavanger. ABV is 6.0%. Clear orange colour, moderate to small white head. Aroma of guava, tangerine and other undefined fruits, seems a bit "artificial" though. Sour flavour, same elements as the aroma, also lactic acid and lemons. Not my cup of tea. I expected something better from Oskar Blues.

The flavour is a massive attack of fruity and piney American hops, fairly light bodied and dry for its strength.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Golden colour, moderate white head. Aroma of citrus, pine needles and tomcat. Medium dry and refreshing flavour, with distinct grapefruity and piney hops throughout, ending in a solid bitterness.

355 ml can, from Vinmonopolet Jørpeland. ABV is 5.3%. Pale golden colour, moderate white head. Fairly nice grassy and herbal aroma. The flavour is a tad too sweet for my liking, but still fairly crisp due to decent hops. Hints of honey and herbs.

355 ml can, from Det Gode Brygg, Sandnes. ABV is 4.0%. Golden colour, slightly hazy. Small white head. Nice aroma of citrus, particularly grapefruit, and pine and spruce. Citric and fizzy mouthfeel, light bodied. Citrus flavour, refreshing, moderate bitterness.

Rerate, 355 ml can, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.9%. Golden colour, moderate white head. Attractive aroma of tropical fruits, citrus and pine. Well hopped flavour, but not overdone. Notes of citrus and other fruits make the beer very drinkable, the moderate piney bitterness seems just right for a session. Original rating: RBESG 2016 in Barcelona. On tap at the BrewDog bar. Golden colour. Well hopped aroma and flavour, notes of tropical fruits and citrus, some pine. Easy drinking - a fine "session" IPA that could easily become a regular of mine.
