3401 Isle of Skye Hebridean Gold United Kingdom Bitter 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. Full name is "Isle of Skye Hebridean Gold Porridge Oat Ale". ABV is 4.3%. Deep golden colour, creamy and lasting off-white head. Pleasant fruity hops in the aroma. Smooth mouthfeel. The flavour has moderate malts and acceptable hops, hints of nuts and maybe some toffee. The porridge oat is just there as an airy notion in the background. Dry hoppy finish. Easy drinking, nice enough.

3402 Isle of Skye Red Cuillin United Kingdom Bitter 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, now available in Norway (bought at Vaaland, Bryne). ABV is 4.2%. Amber coloured beer, moderate off-white head. Aroma of malts, English malt vinegar, fruits and silage. The flavour is malty but also very fruity, hints of berries and malt vinegar, "dusty" hops in the finish. Not really brilliant.

3405 J.W. Lees Harvest Ale United Kingdom English Barleywine 4.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Vintage 2003. 275 ml bottle at the White Horse at Parsons Green, London. Unusual, overwhelming and lovely aroma of port wine, raisins and dried figs, hints of barnyard. Very sweet, like drinking a sweet sherry with carbonation. Warming mouthfeel, as expected from an 11.5% beer. It’s definitely not a beer I’d drink every day, but it sure was an interesting experience. The sweetness makes this an alternative to sherry or port, rather than another beer. 275 ml is definitely enough for one sitting. I understand that some people find it cloying, but with a beer this rich in aroma and flavour, I accept the sweetness.

Cask conditioned at the Alexandra Hotel ("The Alex"), Derby. Pale golden colour, low to none head. Light bodied, thin mouthfeel. Some hops in the aroma and flavour, but not remarkable. This is an ale for the girls!

3407 J.W. Lees John Willies United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 5.0%. Deep golden to amber colour, huge head. Moderate aroma with a little malts and a touch of cooked vegetables. Soft and pleasant mouthfeel, moderate malts & hops make this an easy-drinking bitter, slightly fruity but nothing really remarkable. OKish.

500 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgård, Denmark. ABV is 7.5%. Mahogany coloured beer, big off-white to beige head. Very nice malty aroma with notes of caramel and dark dried fruits, also some oaky and vinous notes. The flavour is malty sweet and rich, notes of caramel and dark dried fruits again, vinous and oaky notes too, moderate hops in the finish. A lovely strong ale!

Shared 500 ml bottle at local tasting, thanks to Ole Anders. ABV is 5.2%. Dark reddish brown colour, moderate beige head. Strong aroma of honey, also notes of brown malts and sourish fruit. Medium sweet flavour of honey and brown malts, unfortunately not balanced by sufficient spices nor hops.

3410 Jack's Abby Mass Rising United States Lager 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

355 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8,0%, IBU 100. Unfiltered and unpasteurised. Hazy golden colour, large white head. Lovely aroma of American hops, notes of tropical fruits, wood and pine, some malty notes too. The flavour has some malts and caramel sweetness, but is first and foremost hoppy, with fruity and piney notes, and a solid but not too extreme bitterness in the finish. In a blind test i would have guessed that this was a double IPA. Must be one of the better golden lagers I’ve had.

250 ml bottle, sure where I got it, possibly from Matkroken Stokka. BB date 26.03.14. ABV is 4.5%. Deep red colour, small off-white / pinkish head. Strong aroma of sour cherries, almond essence and marzipan. Moderately sour, fairly sweet and very fruity flavour, with loads of cherries and almond essence. Would like some more acidity and less residual sugar.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

250 ml bottle, from Matkroken Stokka. BB date 02.01.2015. ABV is 4.5%. I expected something bright red, but the colour is peachy to orange-brownish. Large off-white head. Strong sweetish aroma of ripe and over-ripe raspberries. Fruity flavour, sweet, but not as much as I feared. Raspberries and other undefined ripe fruits. Hardly any bitterness.

3415 Jacobs Jule Ale 2009 Denmark Belgian Ale 3.8

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, 2010 vintage, bottle No. 25823, from Voldby Købmandsgård. ABV is 6.5%. I don't think there has been a recipe change from 2009, the commercial description is basically the same. Mahogany colored beer, large and lasting beige head. Sweetish malty aroma, notes of caramel and molasses, just a hint of orange peel. The well balanced flavour is also malty but not too sweet, moderate notes of caramel and treacle, also hints of mild spices and orange peel, moderate but sufficient hops. Quite enjoyable.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

330 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgård. ABV is 7.5%. Copper colour, large to moderate off-white head. Fruity / citrussy aroma, also notes of caramel and brown sugar. The flavour has moderate notes of citrussy hops on a caramel and brown sugar base. Very moderate bitterness. Not very complex. Clearly drinkable, but not my favourite Christmas beer. Wouldn’t buy again.

3418 Jacobsen Bramley Wit Denmark Witbier 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

750 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. Very pale colour, slightly hazy, large white head. Moderate but nice aroma of apples, citrus, coves and coriander. Very light bodied, thin mouthfeel. Flavour is dominated by a distinct acidity, probably provided by the sour Bramley apples, but there’s not much apple flavour beyond the acidity. Traditional witbier elements (coriander, orange peel) are very subdued. Minimal hops. Refreshing, but no masterpiece. Does not live up to its price.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

750 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. Copper coloured, good creamy off-white head. Pleasant malty aroma, notes of chocolate, toffee and nuts, hints of roastiness. Smooth and mellow mouthfeel, low carbonation. Flavour has caramel, toffee and some chocolate, slightly sugary. Faint notes of English malt vinegar in the background. Very moderate hops. No masterpiece, and not worth the relatively high price.

3420 Jacobsen Extra 4.5% Denmark Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 2.5

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

330 ml bottle, Norwegian version (4.5%), courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Also bought at REMA 1000 grocery store. Drank it a bit too warm. Golden colour, low head. The aroma has moderate notes of malts and dust. The flavour has an acceptable presence of malts, but there is nothing "extra" about the amount of hops. Still, a tolerable bitterness in the finish and aftertaste.

3421 Jacobsen Golden Naked Christmas Ale Denmark English Strong Ale 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

750 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.5%. Copper coloured beer, big beige head. Moderate aroma, hints of Christmas spices and caramel, maybe also a touch of lemon peel. The flavour is medium sweet and malty, notes of caramel and Christmas spices again, some fruit, moderate hops and peppery notes in the finish. There is also a faint touch of liquorice root, but I’d hardly be able to identify it if I did not know that it was supposed to be there. Not a bad beer.

330 ml can, at Tylstrup Kro, Denmark. Hazy yellow colour, moderate white head. Aroma and flavour of mango and other tropical fruits, a tad too sweet. The bitterness could with advantage be firmer, but this is not a bad beer as it is.

Sampled bottle, RBNAG 2007 in Grimstad. Limited edition, bottle No. 008603. Brewed with extract of hips. Golden colour, decent head. Pleasant witbier-like aroma. Light and fresh flavour, moderately fruity, nothing spectacular but nice enough on a summer’s day.
