3176 Herslev Bryghus Gorms Bryg Denmark Spiced Beer 2.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

500 ml bottle, brew #449, from Ølkonsortiet, Aalborg. ABV is 5.5%. Amber to copper colour, slightly hazy. Moderate head, slightly off-white. The aroma has notes of ripe berries and caramel, hints of honey, but also unpleasant notes of rotting green apples and ammonium. The medium sweet flavour has some malts, caramel and rotting fruits, and has an overall coarse character of not very successful homebrew, possibly infected. Low bitterness. This is undoubtedly the least attractive brew I’ve had from Herslev.

3177 Herslev Bryghus Hvede Denmark Hefeweizen 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, kindly brought home from Copenhagen by my wife. Brew #208, ABV is 5.7%. Cloudy golden colour, big white head. The aroma has the typical hefeweizen notes of banana and cloves, also notes of other undefined spices, and some less pleasant notes of rotting fruits. Typical hefeweizen flavour, zesty, fruity and refreshing with notes of cloves and banana, noticeable hops in the finish.

3178 Herslev Bryghus Oktober Bock Denmark Bock 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

500 bottle, from Vinmonopolet Vika. Batch #461. Unfiltered and unpasteurised. ABV is 7.5%. Hazy amber colour, large off-white head. Sweetish but nice aroma, ripe fruits, malts and some caramel. The flavour is also fruity and malty, medium sweet, with tolerable hops in the finish. The alcohol is not very well hidden, but that’s okay - after all, this IS a bock. Quite enjoyable.

3179 Herslev Bryghus Pale Ale Denmark English Pale Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, kindly brought home from Copenhagen by my wife. Brew #199, ABV is 5.9%. Hazy deep golden colour, huge white (slightly off-white?) head. Lovely fruity aroma of Amarillo hops, notes of citrus, hints of resin and tropical fruits. The zesty flavour has distinct and fruity Amarillo hops from start to finish, on a decent malty background - well balanced. Not too sweet. Moderate but sufficient bitterness. A pleasant drop.

3180 Herslev Bryghus Pilsner Denmark Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. Brew #421. ABV is 5.5%. Some sediment in the bottle. Extremely pale yellow colour, slightly hazy, huge white head. Sweetish aroma of malt sugar and grassy hops. Despite some malty sweetness in the flavour, there are enough hops to make the beer feel fairly crisp. Very bitter finish and aftertaste.

3181 Herslev Høst Bryg Hyben Denmark Fruit Beer 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet Vika. ABV is 6.2%. Orange colour, large off-white head. Strong aroma of of rose hips and wild rose petals, as expected, and some undefined sweetish fruity notes that I am not entirely comfortable with. The flavour is better than the aroma, medium sweet and fruity, rose hips again, moderate but noticeable hops. Fairly drinkable.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

500 ml bottle, kindly shared by my beerpal Christian. ABV is 11%. Brew #20, "brewed 2006, bottled 2007, drinkable from 2008, good at least until 2012"". Very dark ruby colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Lovely aroma of dark dried fruits (incl. raisins), oak, dark malts, vinous notes. The flavour has much the same elements as the aroma, with tolerable hops in the finish.

3183 Herslev Økologisk Hvedeøl Denmark Hefeweizen 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. Brew #432. ABV is 5.6%. There has been a recipe change for this beer, it is now a German-inspired Hefeweizen, not a Belgian-inspired Witbier as before. The recipe now seems to be much the same as their ordinary Hvedeøl, only with organic ingredients. Some sediment in the bottle. Cloudy pale yellow colour, huge white head. Distinct spicy aroma of cloves, also hints of banana and citrus. Refreshing flavour, not very sweet, notes of cloves again, hints of banana. Moderate hops. Highly drinkable.

Very nice aroma of fruity hops (tropical fruits), also some piney notes. Plenty of carbonation in the mouth. Distinct hoppy flavour throughout, notes of pine, grapefruity bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. Good beer!

3185 Herslev Økologisk Juleøl Denmark Belgian Ale 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. Brew #384. ABV is 6%. Dark brown colour, slightly hazy, big cream-coloured head. Nice aroma of Christmas spices and caramel malts, hints of oranges. Rather light bodied for a 6% beer. The flavour is somewhat acidic and citrussy, notes of Christmas spices, not much sweetness, very moderate hops. Drinkable, but far from the best Christmas beer I’ve had.

3186 Herslev Stjerne Bryg Denmark Belgian Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

500 ml bottle, Christmas 2010, brew #379, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 8.0%. Ingredients include barley malts, wheat malts (6 different malts, the base malt grown in the brewery’s own field), cane sugar, Belgian ale yeast, aniseed, coriander and 2 American hops. Dark brown colour, slightly hazy, big and lasting beige head. Moderate aroma, notes of malts, caramel, anise and coriander. Full and rich mouthfeel. Malty flavour, medium+ sweetness, caramel, distinct notes of anise, subdued hops. I am not a fan of anise, but this beer is not too bad.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

330 ml bottle, as "Kapittel Watou Dubbel" (no "Het" anymore), bought in Frederikshavn, Denmark. Chestnut colour, large light tan head. Lovely caramel aroma, also hops and dark fruits, hints of sherry, spices and oak. Flavour has also caramel sweetness with lightly roasted malts and moderate oaky and spicy elements, nice. 330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9%. Mahogany coloured beer with a nice beige head, no haziness. Malty aroma and flavour with notes of brown sugar, dried dark fruits and caramel, hints of spices. The aftertaste is spicy with a moderate hoppy bitterness. Not quite in the league of the trappists, but certainly a good beer.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, bought in Frederikshavn, Denmark, as "Kapittel Watou Pater" (no "Het" on the label anymore). ABV is 6.0%. Clear and beautiful reddish brown colour, large and lasting light tan head. Nice malty aroma with notes of caramel and bakery, hints of wood, Christmas spices and dark fruits. Flavour is malty sweet but also fruity and zesty, quite nice. Some spices in the background. Definitely not a bad beer, but a tad too sweet to make me ecstatic.

3193 Het Kappitel Watou Blond Belgium Belgian Ale 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

330 ml bottle, bought in Frederikshavn, Denmark, as "Kapittel Watou Blond". "Het" seems no longer to be part of the beer’s name, or have they different labels for different countries? Anyway, the beer pours hazy golden with a large head. Typical Belgian blond ale elements in the aroma: Yeasty, fruity, spicy, oaky, hints of barnyard. Flavour is mildly spicy and hoppy on a moderately sweet and malty background. Not a "big" beer, but nice.

3196 Hiisi Iku-Turso Imperial Stout Finland Imperial Stout 4.6

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

April 2019: 330 ml bottle, probably at Kaisla Beer House, Helsinki, ABV 9.0%. Black colour, tan head. Both aroma and flavour are very well balanced, AFAIK without any unusual ingredients - this is an imperial stout the way it should be. Notes of roast malts, chocolate, coffee and liquorice, hints of tar. Not too sweet. Moderate hops. The best beer I had in Finland.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

February 2014: 330 ml slimline can, as 1906 Año Reserva Especial, produced in Spain for Hijos de Rivera. www.club1906.es . ABV is 6.5%. Ingredients include maize. Golden (nearly deep golden) colour, moderate white head. Fairly decent aroma of grassy hops. The flavour is "dusty", bland and boring, but not offensive.

3200 Hijos de Rivera Estrella Galicia Spain Pale Lager 2.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

330 ml bottle, as Estrella Galicia Premium Lager, from REMA 1000. ABV in Norway is 4.7%. It has the black & red label of the ordinary Estrella Galicia, not the green label of Estrella Galicia Pilsen (which is 4.7% ABV even in Spain). To make further confusion, the label says in Spanish that it contains gluten (which is logical, as the beer contains barley malt), while there is also a sticker in Norwegian, saying that the beer is gluten free. I suspect the Norwegian importer may have misunderstood something here ... At any rate, the gluten content is probably fairly low, as maize (corn) is also an ingredient. Pale golden colour, large to moderate white head, nice lacing. Heineken-like "skunky" and grassy aroma (which I can’t say I find offensive), hints of citrus. Initially a fairly clean and crisp flavour ( I drank it very cold), with a distinct and rather sharp and unpleasant bitterness in the finish, metallic in the aftertaste. Little hop flavour besides the bitterness. Not a great beer, but I’d probably prefer it if the only alternatives were the blandest of Spanish supermarket pale lagers.
