51 Brugse Straffe Hendrik Rousse Belgium Flanders Oude Bruin 3.8

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Bought at the Dépanneur de la Rive in Cap-Rouge, Quebec. Written JUL2007 on golden bottle cap. Pours a dark ruby-red colour with a big fat creamy tanned head. Long retention, chunky lacing and heavy carbonation. The aromas are of roasted malts, caramel, dark fruit and some nuts. Slight tarty mouthfeel. The taste is quite light, with some nuts, mild bitterness and very light cherries and other dark fruits in the aftertaste. No sourness found here, feels more like a dubbel than a flemish sour. Maybe they changed the recipe, who knows. Still a well-brewed beer.

52 Brugse Straffe Hendrik Blond Belgium Belgian Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Bought at the Dépanneur de la Rive in Cap-Rouge, Quebec. Written DEC 2006 on plain golden bottle cap. Pours a cloudy blonde-caramel colour with a white foamy head and good retention. Kind of looks like a witbier. Lots of carbonation and lacing is sloppy all around the glass. The nose reminds me of a pilsner. After breathing a bit, the aromas turn to spices and yeast. Fizzy mouthfeel. The flavours are also yeasty with some decent dry hoppy finish. Quite a refreshing brew and a nice mix between a witbier and a pilsner.

53 Sterkens St. Paul Double Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontario. This dubbel pours a deep red colour with slight orange. The head is tanned with decent retention and nice foam lacing that stays. Flaky sediments are all over the brew. Aromas of dark fruits and quite nutty. Same for the flavours, nutty throughout with light notes of chocolat malt and a slight taste of smoke and oak wook in the aftertaste. Thin-bodied with some light tart on the tongue. A very well-balanced and light dubbel that is quite refreshing.

54 Rochefort Trappistes 6 Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontaio. Pours a deep caramel-brown with light red highlights. The tanned head is medium size and creamy with decent retention, but leave a thick coating on the brew. Lots of yeast chunks are at the bottom of the glass. Good creamy lacing. Aromas of alcohol at first pour, but gone as soon. Light fruits like apples. Creamy and medium-light bodied. Taste starts off on a strong bite, but goes to a smooth bitterness finish. Found in the aftertaste are green apples and some mild dark fruits. Also, mild nuts. Quite refreshing and drinkability is excellent for this lighter Rochefort.

55 Mort Subite Cassis Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Sampled at Vineyard in Ottawa, Ontario. Best before date is 16-01-06. Pours a clear red-pink-orange colour with a small fizzy white head. The lacing is thin and also fizzy, found in spots here and there. Candy nose of blackcurrant with a side that is medicinal. Watery mouthfeel. Starts off like a good tasting cough syrup, then goes to a sour finish. Some metallic flavour is found in the aftertaste, like rust and blood... or maybe just bad water. It does eventually go away. Not as bad as that sounded. The cassis aroma and taste are very nice and pleasant, well mixed, for a good fruit beer.

56 Florisgaarden Chocolat Gardenbeer Belgium Belgian Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontario. Best before February 2006. This witbier with chocolate pours a hazy caramel-amber colour with an off-white medium head and thin lace, but all around. The soft nose is of chocolate with hints of caramel. Thin-bodied with a slight pasted mouthfeel. The taste is of chocolat and candy, that is not too sweet, and not really bitter. Also in there, is orange mixed in, with a touch of nuts and candy diminishing in the aftertaste. Had this one for dessert, right after having Burger King (oh yeah !)... and it was delicious.

57 Mort Subite Peche Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Sampled at Pub Italia in Ottawa, Ontario. Pours a honey colour, looking like peach juice, slightly hazy. The off-white frothy head is long lasting and lacing is great, with big chunks all over. Light peachy aromas with notes of honey. Medium-bodied with a mild surypy feel. Sweet tasting, but not overly, with beautiful peach flavours. A touch of apples and grapes is found, with a little tiny bitterness in the finish. Good dessert beer, but still prefer their raspberry one.

58 Augustijn Abbey Ale Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Best before date written on back label is 23/03/07. Pours a cloudy golden-orange colour with a big white head. This one is fizzy and starts disappearing fast, but then, steadies down, and stays for long period. Lacing is good and patchy. Small amount of sediment at the bottom of the glass, and high quantity of tiny bubbles for the carbonation. The nose is mostly of Belgian yeast with a touch of refreshing fruits, like citrus, pears and apples. Medium-thin mouthfeel that is dry. The taste is mild in bitterness with the fruit showing in the aftertaste. Hints of vanilla are also found. Very refreshing and drinkable.

59 Gulden Draak Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Comes in a white 330ml bottle. Pours a dark red colour with a huge tanned creamy head. Retention is excellent and carbonation is very active. Lacing is chunky and fat. The nose shows the alcohol, but yet very well-mixed with red apples. Dry mouthfeel in the middle and without feeling a burn, alcohol is there. Smooth bitterness is present in the taste, with the apples showing up in the finish. Very nice drinkable strong Belgian ale, especially at 10.5% ABV.

60 Bornem Double Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Came in the Exclusive Belgian ales gift pack, with 5 other brews. Best before 01/02/07. Pours a dark red-brown colour with a big fluffy tanned head. Retention is very long and good thick lace. The nose is milder than expected, with some spices, notes of coffee, raisins, plums, caramel and red apples. Smooth mouthfeel and medium bodied. The taste is also very light with some dark malt, dark fruits, slight bitterness and a clean finish. Very well brewed, just a tad too light on the palate and nose to be an awesome Dubbel.

61 Bornem Tripel Belgium Abbey Tripel 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Came in the Exclusive Belgian ales gift pack, with 5 other brews. Best before 16/02/07. Pours a cloudy golden honey colour with an orange hue. The head is white, fluffy, enormous and leaves good chunky lacing. Alcohol is present in the nose, with some Belgian yeast, sweet honey, green apples and hints of lemon. Slightly tarty mouthfeel. Spicy taste, with some of them apples, and a dry finish. Too bad, some metallic touch shows up somewhere halfway. Pretty good other than that.

62 Bruegel Belgium Belgian Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Best before date is 08/02/07. This Belgian amber ale pours a, well... deep amber colour with an off-white head that is bubbly and creamy. Retention is very good and lacing is not bad. Carbonation is well and alive, with tiny bubbles. Good spicy nose with some grainy malts. Smooth mouthfeel. Taste is caramel, light green apples, spices and a mild nutty finish. Maybe a bit too light. Good lingering raisin taste. Quite nice though for a light Belgian ale.

63 Affligem Tripel Belgium Abbey Tripel 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 9

Best before date is 21 06 07, written on the side label. Pours a beautiful hazy golden-amber colour with a nice slight off-white creamy head. Very good retention, with some thick also-creamy lacing. Mild carbonation, but where the bubbles are coming from, they come lively. Great nose with some Belgian yeast and citrus. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel. The taste is pleasant, but very mild. Not rich with flavours, like other tripel. Starts off with the yeast, then the bitterness comes along, mixed with the fruits. Some dark fruit flavours appear in the aftertaste. Gets better as it warms up. A very nice tripel, but still does not beat Chimay Cinq Cents.

64 Affligem Dubbel Belgium Abbey Dubbel 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Best before date is 22 06 07. This dubbel pours a deep red-brown which is hard to see through, except for the grape red highlights. The tanned head is lightly creamy, but goes away fast. Some crystal-foam lace is left, here and there. The first aroma I get from this brew is one of Oud Bruin, sour and vinous. Then, after sitting there a few minutes, it smells more like syrup, molasses, spices and hints of dark fruits. Still, a coat of lace tops the brew. The taste is nutty with mild bitterness and a dry finish. Good mix of apples and dark fruits. Notes of cherries with some of the spices. Not the greatest in taste and aromas for a dubbel. Still something worth trying from time to time. Gets better as it warms up, but still Westmalle Dubbel is better.

65 Rochefort Trappistes 8 Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Wow ! The LCBO had this one... very awesome. Tagged on the label, 14 09 10 and 14:49. Pours a deep brown with ruby red highlights. Many sediments that are pale in colour are at the bottom. Carbonation is very lively with tiny bubbles. The tanned head is big and foamy-creamy with great retention and lacing. The smell is of apples and some hop mixed in. Notes of chocolate are way in the back. The mouthfeel is lighter than the Rochefort 10, but still has some hold on the tongue. The flavour is really complex. Starts off with some nuts, then, bitter chocolate, coffee, light fruit and spices. Bitter and dry. Wow ! I must say. Bought 6 more for the cellar.

66 Petrus Speciale Belgium Belgian Ale 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Came in a gift-pack for Christmas 2005 at the LCBO, with 2 of these, 2 Triple, 2 Oud Bruin and 1 glass. Pours a golden-copper colour with a big fizzy head. Medium retention, patchy foam lace and light carbonation. The nose is grainy with malt and has a touch of vinegar found in Flemish sours. None found in the taste though. Just malt with hints of lemon, apples and hop in the aftertaste. Crisp and clean, almost dry mouthfeel. A lighter Belgian ale with a great unique taste that is pleasant.

67 Petrus Tripel Belgium Abbey Tripel 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Petrus Triple pours a golden colour with tiny sediments floating all around. It is still clear, almost like a golden lager-look. The white head is fizzy-creamy, big, but dissipates fast enough, leaving a nice wavy lacing around the glass. Light carbonation, just like their Speciale. Aromas of hop with some sourness in the back and very mild vinegar. Dry mouthfeel. The taste is malty and slight lemony with a mild bitter finish. Not much aftertaste and quite smooth. Not much of a triple, but a good Belgian strong ale.

68 Liefmans Goudenband Belgium Flanders Oude Bruin 3.4

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Bought at the Dépanneur de la Rive in Cap-Rouge, Quebec. Best before date on paper around bottle is 2008/12, date on metal top says Feb2015 and the one on the cork is 2.005. Pours a deep brown colour with some red highlights. Pulpy sediments are all over in this one. Head is small, retention not long and lacing is minimal. The first smell you get from the bottle is raspberry, kind of like their frambozen. The aromas I got from the glass were caramel, molasses, cola and a very light touch of raspberries. The mouthfeel is mildly on the tart side. The taste is on the lighter side, with some fruits like cherries, raspberries and apples in the aftertaste. Almost sweet with some mild notes of sourness. What lingers in your mouth is the strong spot of the mouth. Weird, as a Flemish sour, this one does not have much (or any) sourness, nor vinegar maltness. It tastes more like the mix of Liefmans kriek and their frambozenbier.

69 Vondel Flemish Brown Ale Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 2.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

Comes in a 4-pack with a best before date written on the cap, OCT2010. Pours a crazy off-white foamy head that has pretty good retention and leaves also foamy lacing. Colour is dark raspberry red with vivid carbonation. No sourness in the nose, just strong alcohol and some grain malt. Maybe some light cherries, but still not pleasant enough. Lots of red apples, like MacIntosh, in the taste with slight burn in the finish. Some raisins in aroma and flavours. An average brew, but will try back in a few years, as I have two more to cellar. For now, to strong for nothing.

70 Leute Bok Belgium Belgian Ale 3.4

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Had at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontario with a date written on the back label, as 12/05/06 (hoping it is the date it was bottled). Pours a cloudy brown colour with slight beige in it. Very nice creamy off-white with devine retention. Tiny bubble carbonation forms all around the glass. Lacing is silky. Aromas of cider vinegar with fruit (green and red apples) and lightly nutty. Light to medium-bodied. Nutty start that quickly turns into a sour middle and finishes with the fruit, leaving an apple aftertaste. Quite mild overall, and watery, but a good-looking beer with its great head that last the whole experience.

71 Abbaye de Floreffe Blonde Belgium Belgian Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Came in a mix pack of the brewery, with 8 different bottles in all. Best before date says L05102007. This blonde one pours a clean golden-amber colour with a nice frothy white head and decent retention. Slow carbonation is all-over and lacing is pretty good. The nose has that distinctive Belgian yeast smell, with light fruit, grain malt and spices. The mouthfeel is a bit on the weak side. The taste is mild with the yeast showing up, and grain, spices with hardly any aftertaste. Just one of those easy drinking Belgian swill.

72 Satan Red Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 5

Sampled at L'Autre Oeil in Aylmer, Quebec. Poured a clear caramel-red colour with a decent creamy white head that dissipated fast enough and left small lace, in patchy waves. Aromas of mild raisins, grainy malts and some slight unpleasant ones, like rust, wet socks and vegetables. The mouthfeel was slick and medium-bodied. Mild roasted malts and fruits, with decent bitterness and a dry finish. A different kind of red ale and well-made like most Belgian beers, but unfortunetaly, not remarkable enough to have again.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Sampled at L'Autre Oeil in Aylmer, Quebec. Poured a beautiful hazy caramel-red colour with a big tanned creamy head. This one had excellent retention and decent wavy lace. Great aromas of red apples and other fruits, like plum and raisins, mixed in with caramel, molasse and some coffee. Smooth full-bodied creamy mouthfeel. The taste is simply incredible, with some roasted malts, raisins and the red apples show up in the aftertaste, with some mild bitterness. Great butterscotch-coffee finish. An excellent well-brewed beer I would enjoy anytime. My favorite dubbel so far.

74 Achel Blond 8 Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Purchased in a 330ml bottle at Pub Italia in Ottawa, Ontario. Poured a cloudy beige-gold colour with a white head that dissipated fast enough, but leaving a creamy coat over the brew. The lacing is decent. Mild nose with some fruit, like pears. Light, but yet full-bodied. The fruit is present in the taste too, with the addition of green apples and hints of nuts. Overall, pretty light Trappist ale that is quite refreshing.

Had this one at Vineyards, back in the day. Was one of the best tasting beer I had tried at the time. Came in a bottle wrapped up. If they had not discontinued it, I would buy shitloads of this stuff. Had good cherry presence. Goodbye Alexander, now we we have his brother... the Grand Cru.
