151 Struise Tsjeeses Belgium Abbey Tripel 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

2013 edition with a best before date of 31/12/2018. Blew up on me when opened and went all over the place. What was left from it was cloudy amber with lots of sediments floating around. Foamy light-brown head, lasting long enough and with thick soapy lacing. Fruity aromas with apples, mild peaches, caramel, yeast and the sugar. Not as sweet for the taste, but the apples and caramel are present. Some decent smooth bitterness and grass flavours in the finish. Well-brewed, but not something I would have again (not my style).

152 Kerkom Hop Verdomme IPA Belgium IPA 3.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 5

Pours a hazy golden-amber colour with a frothy warm cap that stays, leaving some soapy lace. Sweet-and-light sour aromas with some fruits, grass, honey and Belgian yeast. Hoppy taste of grass, but not your typical American one. Notes of oranges. Interesting, but not one I would have again. I like Belgian IPA, but this is not one of them. The balance is a little all over the place.

153 Leffe Royale Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Part of this years "Our best of Belgium" Christmas pack with 3 brews and 3 glasses. Pours a clean rich golden-amber colour with a decent head in the Leffe Chalice with some nice lacing. Aromas of fresh hay, bananas and caramel. Dryness in the nose from the alcohol and yeast. The taste is balanced between the grain, caramel, grass, spices and background of mineral water. Interesting and nice black classy bottle, but not as good as some other Leffe.

154 Struise Pannepot Grand Reserva Oak Aged Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Vintage 2009 bottle from a SAQ import. Pours a real dark colour with red-copper highlights and a mocha head that stays a bit, leaving a little creamy lacing around. Lots of dark fruits (plum, dates, raisin) in the aromas with a roasted malt base, sugars and some notes of anise. Pretty much the same for the taste, but not as sweet as expected. Alcohol very well-hidden, but mouthfeel is kind of wet and boring. Complex overall, but not my cup of tea (or glass of beer).

155 Fantome Hiver Belgium Saison 3.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Purchased in Vermont. Pours a cloudy golden-amber with loads of chunky sediments floating through it. Foamy warm cap, big, still coming out of the bottle, long lasting and foaming the rim. Aromas of sourness (almost vinegary), weird yeasty and a little fruitiness. The taste is like plastic, with the hops that might be chemicals, more than grassy natural. Spices showing on the head, that is about the nicest thing of this brew. This bitter plastic feel is not good. Not a fan.

156 Malheur Brut Noir Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Enjoyed at the Pub Italia with PaleAleRider. Best before 01/01/2015. Pours a darker brown colour, but not on the black side. Light beige head, bubbly, good retention and a little lacing. Yeasty nose reminding me of Champagne. Then, other scents comes out: nutty, raisins, caramel and dates. The taste is quite smooth with some lighter fruits, but still dark notes, yeast, caramel and roasted malts. Very smooth mouthfeel with just a little warmth. Not sure why they call this one "Black Chocolate" in the US, as I do not feel much chocolate malt. After eating some food, seems like a mix of coconut and vanilla lingers after the soft grassy finish. Quite nice overall.

157 Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple Belgium Abbey Quadrupel 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Single from the LCBO. Pours a slight hazy golden-amber colour with a warm foamy cap, great retention and some soapy lacing. Fruity nose of malt with mild burnt caramel. Real smooth mouthfeel with just a little warming in the gut. Yeast aromas do eventually come out well-blended with some hints of grassy hops. Malty base for the taste with caramel and fruitiness, but some decent hops balanced things. Notes of burnt caramel. Gets cloudy by the end. A nice quadrupel overall, that goes down smoothly. Just nothing to wild.

158 LeFebvre Hopus Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Single bottle from the LCBO with 8.3% ABV. and best before L14112015. Pours a cloudy golden-yellow colour with a white head, good retention and some patchy foam lace. Aromas start off on the malty side, but eventually, grass appears with mild yeast. The herbal notes come out a little bit more in the taste, giving some decent bitterness. This creates a small dryness in the mouthfeel. Spicy flavours making this one a total Belgian hoppy beer, and not a North American experience.

159 Liefmans Cuvée Brut Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Beautifully wrapped green bottle with the typical Liefmans paper. Label on bottle is quite nice and classy. Pours a deep red colour with an orange hue. The head is almost creamy, has a little pink to it, with good retention and some nice thick lacing. Candy aromas with the cherry and yeast combo. Some sourness as well, but in the taste, it is quite mild. Again, more on the sweetness and candy-side. You can start smelling the wood with time, from the oak. Does get better after breathing. A decent kriek, but a little too much sugar to be a great one.

160 Boon Framboise Belgium Fruit Lambic 2.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Single bottle from the LCBO and my first Boon brew. Best before date is Nov 27 2018 written on back label, but not sure this one is not infected. Smell like wet feet and the flavour is not really good (yes, feet again). Alright, there is a bit of what is expected like some sourness, some sweetness, Belgian yeast and some light tartiness. Clean deep copper-red colour with a pink frothy head, average retention and minimal lacing. Of course, this one does not list sugar in the ingredients like some of the Liefmans, so maybe this is what a more natural fruit lambic should taste like. Just a little too unbalanced for my taste. Thankfully does get better with time.

161 Lindemans Gueuze Cuvee Rene Belgium Gueuze 2.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

Originally rated in 2011. Green bottle has a bottle cap and a cork, on top of having foil over them. Take a while to get through, but then you get a really fizzy carbonated hazy golden colour beer with a big head that stays a long time and leaves patchy lace. Big wood (oak) aromas with some sour citrus and notes of yeast. Wet mouthfeel with small tannins. The taste is pretty sour, but finishes quickly with the wood continuing a bit. I love gueuze lambic, but this one is a bit all-over and not well-balanced.

162 Vedett Extra White Belgium Witbier 3.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

4-pack from the LCBO in green Duvel bottles. Pours a hazy yellow colour with a big white frothy head, good retention and wavy lacing. Wheat nose at first, but eventually the lemon citrus sourness comes out. Smooth Belgian Ale yeast is also present here and in the taste. Mild lemon flavours with the orange in the background, but not really zest, and not much of the coriander. Nothing bad, but just lacking the nice attack of a witbier.

163 St. Bernardus Blanche (Witbier) Belgium Witbier 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

4-pack from the LCBO. Pours a cloudy beige-yellow with a massive white head and some creamy lacing. Nice wheat, orange aromas with notes of citrus and coriander. The taste is pretty mild though with a little Belgian Ale yeast and the spices-orange in the background. I like St. Bernardus and I like Witbier, but this is nothing to crazy. Better than lots, and it changes at every sip. A little lacking in the flavours.

Celebrating review 2300 tonight, and also advancing to #15 in top reviewers. Really love their Blauw version, so been pumped to try this for a while. Pours a slightly hazy golden colour with a white head, good retention and lacing. Aromas of Belgian Ale yeast well-blended with the grassy hops giving hints of mints and lemon. A lot of the same for the taste, again, very well-balanced. Alcohol very well-hidden. A beautiful blond version of the Blauw !

165 De Leite Cuvée Soeur´Ise Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Big foamy pink head with great retention and soapy lacing. The brew is cloudy, cherry red coloured with a slight amber hue. Citric nose with some soft cherries and other fruity notes. The taste has some sourness, but not as strong as a standard lambic. Mild cherries with some tartiness from the yeast. Hints of oranges and other citruses. A stronger lambic that is quite refreshing and lightly fruity. I was expecting a little more punch though. Nicely brewed overall.

166 De La Senne Zinne Bir Belgium Belgian Ale 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Cloudy golden colour with loads of tiny particles, a little amber hue. Nice frothy-creamy white cap, good retention and thick foamy lace. 5.8% written on label. Citrus aromas at first, with some Belgian yeast and some mild spices. Taste of citrus zest with some nice grassy hops to give this ale some good bitterness. The dryness gets a little stronger in the finish. Oranges are also part of the citrus here. Quite a hoppy beer for a Belgian one.

167 De La Senne La Jambe de Bois Belgium Abbey Tripel 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Pours a hazy light golden-yellow colour with loads of tiny particles all over. The head is frothy, warm-white, has good retention and thick foamy-creamy lace. Aromas of citrus, Belgian Ale yeast, light spices (pepper) and some nice mild hops. Citrus flavours as well with some light grain, but this is where the hops come alive. Dry bitterness of grass with hints of plastic. Gets sharper as you drink. A hoppier then normal Tripel. Not bad.

168 Liefmans Fruitesse Belgium Fruit Beer 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Called "Fruitess on the Rocks" as they suggest to pour over ice cubes. ABV. is showing 3.8% and 6-pack from the LCBO. Red-amber colour, on the dark-side with a long lasting pink head and some decent lacing. Very sweet nose with lots of candy fruits (mostly strawberries, but other berries). The taste is sweet as well with the fruits, cherries mostly adding some nice sourness to blend things. I love these fruity beers, but they are very candy-like, more then a true fruit beer.

Bottle enjoyed at Todd English pub in Vegas. Pours a hazy golden-amber colour with lots of apples in the aromas and taste. Notes of Belgian Ale yeast. Quite a nice easy-drinking Belgian ale with loads of natural apples.

Pours clean deep amber colour with a hauge frothy light-beige head, good retention and foamy lacing. Belgian Ale yeast smell with spices, hops and some hints of dark fruits. The taste has some sourness from the cherries, mild spices and the Belgian Ale yeast. Some dark notes lingers. Goes down quite easy and all very well-balanced.

172 Lindemans Peche Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Under the name "Pêcheresse" in a green bottle with a cork and cap, under foil. Golden-amber colour, slightly hazed with an off-white frothy head, good retention and some creamy lacing. Sweet nose with the fruity peach aromas and some grain in the background. The taste is where you get the sourness with the peach notes. Oily mouthfeel, so not too sticky. An interesting peach lambic that seems pretty real.

173 Lindemans Framboise Belgium Fruit Lambic 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Pours a hazy red colour with a foamy pink head, great retention and lacing. Raspberry aromas with some Belgian Ale yeast. The taste shows more the fruit with its sweetness, tartiness and sourness. Not too sweet though, to be too rich to drink. A very nice Belgian fruit brew for such a low alcohol content.

174 Rodenbach Vintage 2007 Oak Aged Ale Belgium Flanders Red 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

2013 edition, matured for 2 years in Foeder 149. Pours a slight hazed deep amber colour with a copper hue. Light beige frothy head, decent retention and a small creamy ring. Aromas of sourness with sweetness from the grape notes. Hints of cider, balsamic vinegar and wood in the nose. Sour taste, but milder than expected with a wet finish. So, not as tarty. Fruity flavours. Not bad, but expected a little more from this one. Feels a little watered down. Maybe too well-blended.

175 Duvel Tripel Hop (2015): Equinox Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Best before 01 2017 on back label. Pours a hazy light golden-yellow colour with a foamy white cap, staying a while, giving out soapy lace. Aromas are a little off-balanced with some green leaves, some honey, some yeast and a bunch of fruits. Luckily the taste is better balanced with grassy hops, lemon notes. Ends up being not too bad, but I really enjoyed the 2013 edition with the Sorachi Ace better.
