7151 Wychwood Goliath United Kingdom Bitter 2.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Comes in a brown bottle at the LCBO and written on front label... "The beer to slay a mighty thirst". Alright sailor... let's do this ! Pours a slightly hazy amber colour with a big creamy off-white head that has great retention and thick lacing. Just a few tiny bubbles for carbonation. Not much smell at first, but then, lots of hay and biscuit malt appears, with notes of fruits. Very smooth and silky mouthfeel, with hardly any carbonation. Feels like an English cask brew. Watery taste with hints of caramel, hops, grain and fruits. Not a bad session beer at 4.2% ABV... kind of slaying away at my thirst.

First off, beautiful presentation !! I know, I know... clear bottles for beer is a no-no ! Obviously, the brewery wanted to show the nice copper red this ale is. Also, the bottle and label make this a magnificant gift to give beer lovers. Bubbly head and rich aromas. Slightly bitter taste, but goes down very smooth. Hints of molasse and pleasant finish.

7153 Wychwood Hobgoblin Gold United Kingdom Blonde Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Pours a golden colour with bubbly off-white head that stays a while, leaving some decent foamy lacing. Nice aromas of fruits, mostly citrus, but not just the zest, but the inside too. Piney notes as well from the hop. The hops are actually quite present in the taste as well, over the grainy malts, to finish with some mild zest. Just not too bitter. A nicely hopped, light-alcohol easy-drinking golden ale. Well done Wychwood !

7154 Wychwood Imperial Red United Kingdom Extra Special Bitter 3.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Part of their Christmas sampler for 2014. Pours a clean deep amber colour with a frothy off-white head, that fizzes out of the bottle, but stays up a decent amount of time. Creamy-foam lacing is left. Grainy cereal aromas with some hints of corn at first, but some spicy hops do come out. These hops appears in the taste as well, giving some metallic notes in the middle. Thankfully, the grain, light caramel malts and corn keeps things balanced a little. Decent refreshing red ale, but wish it did not have the rusty taste and corn in the mix.

7155 Wychwood King Goblin (Special Reserve) United Kingdom English Strong Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Pours a clean deep amber colour with a light beige foamy head, average retention and dirty lacing. Matly cereal nose with some toffee notes and a bit of alcohol. No burning from it in the mouth though and medium-bodied. A little more hop in the taste, well-blended with the caramel malt, adding some slight bitterness and dryness in the finish. Hints of roasted malts are also tasted in the aftertaste, with some fruits (apples, raisins) and then coffee and nuts. Not a bad brew and worth having once a year at this time of witches.

This one is outdated by a year (so will grab another new one from the LCBO this week and see the difference). Pours a light golden-amber colour with a creamy-bubbly white head that has good retention and leaves soapy lace. The malt seems still good, with grainy notes, but the hop has gone bad. Still pretty refreshing and easy-drinking session blonde ale.

7157 Xbeeriment Black Force One Denmark Imperial Stout 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Purchased at the LCBO a year ago. Pours a real dark brown colour with red highlights. Big beige creamy-frothy head, long lasting with some good lacing. Beautiful peaty malt nose with dark fruits, roasted malts, licorice, sweet chocolate and mild coffee. Smooth mouthfeel, medium-bodied. The taste has lots of anise over the roasted malts, which is not showing as sweet as the nose gave out to be. Alcohol is very well-hidden behind the darkness. Complex and definitely worth trying. Wish I would of bought more to cellar.

7158 Xbeeriment Hoppenheimer Imperial IPA Denmark Imperial IPA 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

From the private SAQ import. Pours a cloudy amber colour with a big warm yellow cap, great retention and loads of fluffy lace. Fruity malts with lots of caramel and even butterscotch at one point. The hop is present, but the whole thing seems more like a normal IPA, not like an Impy IPA. Notes of grapefruits eventually appear. Alcohol is very well-hidden, goes down quite nicely. Grapefruit zest in the taste offering a little dryness. Orange hints linger in the aftertaste. Really smooth overall and different for the style as previously mentioned. In a good way.

7159 Xbeeriment Madraz IPA Denmark IPA 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Private SAQ import. Pours a cloudy golden-amber colour with a great white, creamy-foamy head, great retention and lots of thick soapy lacing. Smells hoppy at first, with some dark grass, but then the grainy malts appear, adding caramel notes, honey and oranges. The hop is bitter in the taste, but not too overpowering, with hints of oranges. Was not a fan of the hop aromas at first, but this beer is quite drinkable and well-balanced.

7160 XO Beer France Biere de Garde 4.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

First off, I am not a Cognac drinker. But is this shit good or what ? Poured an orange-golden colour with a descent head. Good retention and good lacing. Man, is the aroma of this brew heaven ? It was kinda floral mixed with an orange-something-else purfume. Also, hints of raspberries. Heavily carbonated with tiny little bubbles. Taste was a mix of cognac and raspberries. Not a good session beer, but a damn good after-supper one.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Sampled at the Pub St. Alexandre in Quebec City. Poured a deep amber-orange colour with a small head with no retention and some patch lacing. The nose was nutty with caramel in the back and some fruit too. The taste was mixed between orange and caramel with a very smooth mouthfeel. Syrupy with a beautiful candy mouth. Just like the XO Beer Cognac, a great mix of beer and strong liquor.

7162 Yanjing Beer China Pale Lager 2.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Bought a six-pack of this at the LCBO, and had a few for our jam straight from the bottle. Was pretty decent. Now, from the glass. Pours a light golden colour with a big foamy white head, good retention, lots of small lacing lines and average carbonation. The aromas starts on grain malt, but ends up on the hoppy side. Crisp mouthfeel, but not watery, with a medium body. The taste is like the smell, starting off with the grain malt and going into a mildly bitter finish. This beer is nothing exceptional, but a bit better than the other swill Chinese brews we get here. Found it pretty hoppy from the bottle. Written on back label, imported by Hi-Bridge Consulting Corp. from Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

7163 Yankee Jim Genuine Draft United States Pale Lager 2.4

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

All natural premium beer - says the can. Looks pretty trashy to me. Pours a golden colour with a decent head that leaves good lacing. The carbonation is made of medium size bubbles and seems natural (for a lager). Well for swill, this one has malt to its nose. The mouth is smooth with slight sweet malt. Better then the Lucky Lager I had last night.

7164 Yankee Jim Honey Ice United States Lager 2.4

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Pours a lighter than average golden colour with a big white head. This one disappears fast enough, and only leaves a little wet lace around the collar. Medium-sized bubbles are all stuck together, around the glass... lots of them. The nose is nice and fresh right after pour, but then, the aromas change to some chemical smell (not lethal) with a little lemon thrown in there. So, lemon, but I don't smell the honey. Mouthfeel is very, very smooth... just like it is written on the can... "extremely smooth". Does not taste much, except a little alcohol (well covered by the honey I guess) in the finish, and the grain (cereal, corn) really stick out in the aftertaste. Not a bad swill, that is very smooth.

7165 Yankee Jim Honey Lager United States Lager 2.2

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

My last of the Yankee Jim series (unless they create another one). Pours a golden-amber colour with an off-white foamy head. Quickly dissipates, but some light lacing is left. Crazy carbonation at first, then becomes a flat watery mouthfeel. The nose is grainy in malt with touches of honey and something kind of gross and weird (like rust). The taste is not too sweet, starting with some bitterness and malt, finishing on a grainy note. The honey calms down the bitterness and is amplified in the aftertaste, way later. Not a bad swill and easy going.

7166 Yankee Jim Ice United States Strong Lager 2.1

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 4

This Yankee Jim Ice is actually not bad, for an ice beer. The colour is not as nice as the Genesee Ice (reviewed tonight). Plain golden lager colour with not much head and lace to show for. The aroma is of sweet malt. In the taste, there is some bitterness. Crisp finish. Not too shabby.

7167 Yankee Jim Ice Bock United States Strong Lager 2.0

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

Pours a golden-yellow colour with a frothy white head that is pretty big, and stays a little while. Not much carbonation and even the mouthfeel feels flat. I can just barely make a little burp (s'cuse me). Can't really feel any alcohol, except for the buzz. Mild malty nose and grain really shows up in the aftertaste. Nothing really bad here, just a decent swill to get shitfaced.

7168 Yard House Belgian Amber Tripel Belgium Abbey Tripel 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Had this one at the Yard House in Vegas, at the Red Rock Resort on my trip there in the fall of 2011. Great creamy head, almost looking like nitro was involved in this one. Decent retention and small lacing. Golden-amber coloured. The smell reminds me of Kilkenny, with caramel malt and fruity notes. Creamy mouthfeel with a little stickiness. Pretty sweet tasting at first with some fruit in the middle and slight hop in the finish. The aftertaste is spicy. A pretty nice Tripel brewed by Silly.

7169 Yazoo Hefeweizen United States Hefeweizen 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Purchased in Nashville on my trip there. Pours a cloudy yellow-beige colour with a white foamy head, good retention and lots of lace. A whole bunch of tiny sediments are everywhere, floating around. Beautiful wheaty nose that is refreshing with notes of witbier yeast and cloves. Wet oily mouthfeel and medium-bodied. The taste is a nice blend of the wheat, bananas with hints of bubble gum in the aftertaste. A great first experience for Yazoo... must try more while I am here in Nashville.

7170 Young's Dirty Dicks Ale United Kingdom Bitter 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Poured an amber-orange colour with a fine head. The nose was fruity and hoppy. The taste, as well, was fruity (on the orange side). Could also taste the light caramel malts. Had a mild bitter finish. A pleasant english ale with a cool name, and a good story behind it (written on the label).

7171 Young's Double Chocolate Stout United Kingdom Chocolate Stout 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Awesome ! The LCBO got some of this, so I can finally review it. Had it many times, but never made notes of it. Even enjoyed one during Earth Hour a few days ago... but was in the dark (so no writing). Pours a black colour with no visible red highlights (except for the slim bottom of the glass). Quite a big head for a stout. Beige-brown in colour, very creamy, long lasting and creates good chunky lace all-around. Smooth chocholat nose that is more on the bitter side, than on the sweet side, with notes of coffee, nuts and vanilla perfume. The mouthfeel is quite smooth and creamy... has a beautiful flow, and not really heavy. I think the taste might of been toned down since I first had it many years ago, when it use to be full-flavour and rich. Now, the flavours are still chocolaty, but not so much in your face. Again, it tends to be more on the slight bitter side, than on the sweet side. A bit of the hop surfaces in the finish. Still, quite a great dessert beer that is worth trying everytime you get a chance.

7172 Young's Old Nick United Kingdom English Barleywine 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Best before date on label is 22 Feb 07. Pours a clean deep amber colour with a great tanned frothy head that is long lasting. Decent web lacing comes out of this, and carbonation is slow with tiny bubbles. The aroma is mild at first, but becomes much better and strong as the beer gets warmer. Written to drink at room temperature. The bar I was at served it cold. Nice caramel nose that overpowers the dark fruit. Very smooth mouthfeel with no burn at all. Good hoppy taste without being bitter. Caramel malt is present with roasted malt in the background. Alcohol slightly shows up in the finish, but disappears as fast. The aftertaste is kind of dry. Like most beer from Young's (I've tasted)... greatly brewed and easy to drink for any level of beer lovers. Very, very smooth.

7173 Young's Special London Ale United Kingdom English Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Dranked at L'Autre Oeil in Aylmer, Quebec. Bottle conditioned with a best before date that reads: 13 Apr 07. Poured a slightly hazy, clean (no sediments) amber colour. Beautiful creamy off-white head with excellent retention and decent lacing rings all-around. Nice fruity citrus nose with good hop. Full-bodied mouthfeel with a dry aftertaste. Had a metallic start, but disappeared quickly after the first sip. Great hoppy bitterness with the fruit (grapefruit, orange). Not sweet because of the hop though. Extremely well-brewed ale with the perfect balance between bitterness and fruity. Quite a refreshing brew... and was great with the nachos we had there.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

This ale poured a golden-amber colour with a good head, and some lacing. The nose was weak with confusing aromas. Could mostly smell the alcohol. Tasted fruity, but not much on the honey side. Smooth mouthfeel. Good, but deceiving for a brew from Young's Brewery.

7175 Yuengling Original Black & Tan United States Porter 2.9

Thanks to my parents for bringing this back from the States. Pours a brown colour with a frothy beige head and a little lacing. Roasted malt scent with some notes of dark fruits and other fruity yeast. The taste is milder with the dark fruits, burnt malts and yeast. Mild bitterness in the finish. A decent macro brew that mixes a porter and a premium lager.
