126 Sunny Ridge Pilsner United States Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Grass, barnyard funk, hint of honey in the nose. Quire clear light yellow body for an unfiltered and unpasteurized brew topped with minimal white head and little lace. Mouth is medium to light bodied, nicely fizzy. Flavor is what one expects, grass notes, light biscuit, some sour fruit towards the end, very dry clean finish. Some esters in the aftertaste.

129 Kent Falls Yeesh! United States Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Classic pils nose, grassy touch of vanilla, Clear pale gold body topped with a white head leaving a nice skim coat very good lace constant effervescence. Moderate body perhaps a bit too carbonated. Flavor is classic czech pils, big ole grassy meadow, slightly off-putting aftertaste is a bit too astringent, a hint of aspirin. Overall a pretty good attempt.

130 Friars' Brewhouse Monastery Ale United States Brown Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

REceived as a secret santa gift. Not much info out there, they don't have a real website. Big malty nose with sweet roasted caramel notes coming through. (since I posted it I called it a Brown Ale, but they are rumored to claim that it is brewed in a Saison/FArmhouse style, go figure.) Floral hops in the nose, lavender? Great nose. Pours a deep copper body that is clear and topped by a reasonable head with unbelievable retention and nice lace. The mouth on this is creamy and full-bodied, slightly slick, chewy, and has a low fizz factor. Tastes like a brown ale gone slightly sweet. You get hit with major roasted malt, a cotton candy sweetness, followed with floral hops. The finish is just slightly bitter. The aftertaste has a slightly objectionable chemical taste high on the roof of the mouth so it gets a 7 (I think its a strange way the hops are combining with the sugars), otherwise would have been a 9. Fun beer!

131 Rogue Farms Fresh Roast United States Brown Ale 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Black Cherries and rich roasty malts in the nose with some dank woody notes.Pours a very dark opaque brown without and ruby hints and topped with a modest head that is caramel colored and leaves no lace. The mouth is surprisingly thin and the carbonation is low but I kind of like it works. Taste is fairly mild but complex. The overall presentation is sweet malts with deep roasted grain. The finish has slight hop notes, tart apple and the aftertaste is slightly burnt toast. Although the alcohol is not high it is present at the end is is slightly warming.Very sessionable but missing some depth.

132 Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Very small and short lived beige head with minimal lacing over a deep deep copper colored body . Perhaps the carbonation is not as well done as most Dogfish products. Nose of citrus, figs and cotton candy. Mouth feel is delightful… all silk and velvet with a decent tingle but just a bit thin. Flavor is nice, the first tatste is porter-like but becomes more aleish as time goes buy. It hits sweet with a good carmel flavor then goes astringent and hoppy with a nice bitterness that leads to a sweet flavor of toasty malts. Well balanced for a sweet ale it finishes surprisingly clean and fairly dry. Alchohol is barely present in the taste but leaves a nice heat in the belly. This would probably be a great beer to introduce less adventurous quaffers to a whole new world of elixers. Its very very aproachable! RERATE 11/22/2016 Nose has nots of licorice and bourbon. Vigorous pour now produces a thick frothy head with good retention and lace.

133 Newcastle Brown Ale United Kingdom Brown Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Big big nose on this brew. Sweet fruits, figs, raisins, orange and nice spice notes mostly pepper ... a winey nose. Pours a real nice frothy pale carmel-colored head. Medium to dark brown clear body with not much continuing fiz, somehow thin in appearance. Excellent lacing. Mouth feel is thin and a bit flat, the carbonation is underdone. Flavor was strong on the first swig but seems to dissapear as I continue drinking. There is a lot of toasted malts and very mild hop flavors, it hits sweet then tingles a bit with the touch of hops, but stays sweet throughout and ends fairly dry. Not complicated and a touch winey. No doubt an easy session brew.

134 Abita Turbo Dog United States Brown Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

I suspect the bad reviews come from folks who are drinking this too cold! This brew is quite different once it warms to what I think of as English pup temperature then it is when fresh out of the fridge. When cold, this beer tastes to me like a slightly watered-down stout; mostly just bitter coal tar taste. Bring that bottle outta the fridge for 10 or 15 minutes before you open it and its a whole different animal! Pours very dark brown with ruby undertones present when held to light, not quite opaque. Pours with a nice caramel colored head that has only modest retention but delivers very nice lace. Nose of figs, coffee, and dark chocolate; a mild nose but nice although not long lasting. Mouth is medium bodied and, for a beer that appears quite still in the glass, quite frothy... the carbonation is very tight. When very cold this beer tastes nothing but bitter but when allowed to warm slightly the flavor really rounds out; the crystal and chocolate malts come into their own and balance the hops quite nicely. It hits slightly sweet, goes bitter, and finishes chocolate goodness with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Really a masterful job of balancing. There is a bit of a sweet-sour thing going own that reminds me of Belgium and may be responsible for the reviews that detected mettalic (its not!)This may be the only beer that I have given a higher "overall" number to then I did to any other category; not overly complex yet this beer is more than the sum of its parts. Well done Abita!

135 Sweetwater Sweet Georgia Brown United States Brown Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Sampled while waiting for a connection at Atlanta airport so ignore the price. Deep copper witha dirty head with good retention and average to good lace. Sweet nose from malt and hops. Mouthfeel was quite foamy and slightly watery, maybe a bit over carbonated? Nice flavor, very drinkable, wlightly sweet, not complicated, and more hops bitterness than expected in the style (probably to balance out the sweet malts). this is a pretty drinkable beer.

136 Peak Organic Nut Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Not a lot of nose; slightly malty/sweet and fruity with citrus and a hint of pine. this is "organic" and there is a lot of residue floating in the dark copper body. Dirty white head that has moderate retention and moderate lacing. Mouth is a bit thin IMHO carbonation well done. Flavor is uncomplicated but fairly standard altbier stuff. I can't really taste the chocolate malts and I might like a bit sturdier malt backbone,it hits slightly sweet then goes a bit sour ends with a fairly strong hop bite (not hophead strong). The finish is very clean and dry, I might try the next one a bit warmer and see if the malt comes out more. Tastes like more to me and I suspect you could drink a lot of these, good session beer and overall a nice job.. A few days later RERATE I let it warm just a bit this time before pouring suspected the first one was too cold but I was too thirsty! Huge foamy head, great lace, nose a bit more fruity but still a bit weak, very nice taste, chocolate malt just detectable, great hop, malt balance, real nice beer!

137 Saranac Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Fairly strong and very hoppy nose, pine, citrus and maybe a bit of raisin. this amount of hops nose in an American Brown is optional but I think its overdone here. Very deep brown with hints of copper body that is clear, nice head off white, not long lasting, but leaves a nice skim coat. Mouthfeel is thin, too thin I think for the style. I am not getting enough malt in the flavor. I pick up cirtus hops initially, mid taste is some almost non-existent crystal malts, there is a somewhat nasty astingency high up in the rear sides of the mouth, finishes dry and just a hint of sweet. The label promises a traditional Brown with lots of malt flavor nicely balanced with hops but that just isn't happening for me. This is quite drinkable but I think it misses the style here and there. Ok, now I have read the other reviews, many mention maltiness but I still don't taste it, oh well. LATER AS it warms the malt is coming through a bit more which is nice but the mouth is getting ever more thin, just not a well made beer.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

100th review and just bottled first batch of homebrew! Sweet nose, lots of malt and citrus very well balanced. pours a dark copper slightly foggy body with carmel colored medium head, nice retention and moderate lace. Medium mouthfeel is slick, coats the mouth nicely, tight well done carbonation. Flavor is sweet chocolate and figs with nice balance on citrusy hop. finish is slightly bitter with a sweet/sour aftertaste. Really excellently balanced for a sweetish beer!

139 Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale United Kingdom Brown Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Big wonderful nose on this one. Raisins, chocolate, caramel, touch of citrus. Frothy off-white head of decent size sits atop a dark copper, light brown body that it clear. Laces well. Mouth is medium and chewy, nicely slippery, excellent carbonation. Crystal malts dominate in the taste mixed with some nice hoppy citrus, and there follows an additional malt flavor with some hints of prune and pepper and rosemary. Finish is slightly sweet and fairly clean.

140 Woodstock Inn Pigs Ear Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Nose of coffee, coal, and toffee, maybe a touch of pine, if you have ever had psoriasis this smells like most of the old coal tar ointments. Dark brown body , moderate to slight head leaves a decent skim coat with some malty indications. Mouth is fuzzy but not in good way (OK this is not my favorite style) and medium bodied that turns watery fast. Some high back of the mouth citrus hop notes present themselves right up front and get followed by a sour fruit flavor with some clinging sweetness. The end is tart and the aftertaste is a bit fruity. I'm scoring it as high as I can for a style I am not fond of.

This is very good ale! Nose is sweetish with lots of malt and significant hops, red/brown/mocha body topped with a nice foamy tan head and decent lace. Mouth is medium and creamy with very nice carbonation. Taste is rich and deep, lots of sweet malt and well hopped finish, reminds me a bit of a tamer version of their brown sugga. Lovely brew!

Had with a lobster roll and then again at a tour of the brewery, nice tour and tasting. Crystal malts dominate the nose. Pours a medium brown body with a decent head, little lace, ok retention. Mouth is medium and slippery. Crystal malt predominates, feels very low alcohol..not sure I believe the 5.2 and actually website says 4.8. VERY drinkable, hugely sessionable.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Bread dough, vanilla, baking spices, in the nose. Deep Ruby Brown body with an off-white head leave the skim coat and a touch of lace. Mouth is both creamy and tingly nice carbonation level fully coating. There's a lot going on in the flavor with fairly distinct phases. Start creamy with just a hint of dark fruit in the middle and a touch of charred malt and chocolate towards the end. Aftertaste is slightly sweet slightly oily and slightly bitter, very drinkable.

144 The Quill United States Brown Ale 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Nose of roasted malts, overripe dark fruit, and lactose. This is a very nice looking beer at least on draft. Keep clear copper body with a lovely beige fluffy head that leaves fantastic lace. The mouth is creamy and full-bodied very nice carbonation level. This one hits sweet and ends with dark bitter chocolate and coffee ground flavors. I'm definitely picking up some lactose in the middle of this is also just a hint of sour and some astringent bittering at the end. This is a really good beer.

145 Cigar City Maduro Oatmeal Brown Ale United States Brown Ale 3.6

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Sweet malt, chocolate, coffee and some high pine notes in the nose. Dark brown not quite opaque body is topped with a caramel colored skim coat that leaves pretty nice suds and some lace. Mouth is pretty light almost watery not a lot of carbonation in the tongue. Flavor not nearly as sweet as the nose black coffee comes through and dominates the aftertaste. There's some deeply roasted malt flavors. Just a hint of dark fruit in the beginning. Very very drinkable somewhat drying.

146 Clown Shoes Burnt Caramel United States Brown Ale 3.6

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Nose of toasted grain, cookie dough, raisins, brown sugar. Very deep copper body is quite clear with a tan head that leaves a skim coat and no lace. Strong tingle and a fairly creamy mouth medium bodied. Flavor reminds me a lot of Lagunitas Brown Shugga. Starts with dark fruit overripe, then a big hit of sweet cotton candy followed quickly find a hint of bitterness and ends up fairly dry. I touched too sweet overall but not a bad brew.

147 Anchor Steam United States California Common / Steam 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 9

Wow, haven't dropped an anchor since I stumbled upon beerpal and started rating brews, and what a delight. I was suprised to detect almost no hops in the nose, a very bready, malty sent. The beer poured a nice off-white head that did not last long and produced moderate lace over a very clear and copper body. Mouthfeel is light (not in a bad way) crisp and clean with moderate carbonation tingle. The flavor is uncomplicated, starts with a little carmel malt sweetness, hits a solid hops bite on the back of the palate, and follows with a touch of peppery spice and a bit of sour fruit. Aftertaste is fairly dry with a lingering sourness. Seems I am only giving this beer 7's but I think the overall gets an 8. Somehow its better than the sum of its parts. this is definately a beer that tastes like more, it could be a major session beer, I could pound a lot of these and i am not a pounder! I would also think this would be a great introductory beer to anyone who is only used to macro-swill. Re-rate: having a second one; my numbers came out to 3.6 and I think it deserves more. Just cahsed some beef taquitos with salsa verde and this brew is damn nice with Mex. but thats not the reason for the re-rate. On a scale against all beers 3.6 is reasonable but it seems that I really should factor in the quality within the style, maybe not the steam style so much as session brew style. So I am kicking up the overall and mouthfeel. The bottom line is there is just nothing wrong with this beer!

148 Samuel Smith Organic Chocolate Stout United Kingdom Chocolate Stout 2.7

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 4

Oh My, the nose just screams chocolate, some ripe fruit (their yeast) sends this to Kalua or Brandy Alexander, maybe some cinnamon, not a nose for the faint of heart. Nose is long -lasting. Pours opaque very dark brown body with minimal head (point off for this) that is beige and leaves a bit of short-lived lace. Mouth is thin (I seem to be hitting a lot of thin-mouthed stouts lately) and perhaps a touch under-carbonated. (Interesting that Samuel calls this a malt beverage with natural flavor added, one wonders where in the brewing process this happens, does chocolate go in just before bottling?) I am going to let this warm in the glass for 10-15 minutes before grading the flavor, cold its chocolate and perhaps raspberry with decent bittering. OK... very poor balance, chocolate is overwhelming and tastes like an extract, not like quality chocolate. Some bittering and some citrus-like notes buried in the crappy chocolate taste. Just tastes artificial. cloyingly sweet top to bottom.

149 Harpoon Chocolate Stout United States Chocolate Stout 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Wow, this nose is Sweet Vermouth when first poured, then chocolate notes invade (think Kahula), its a very prominent nose (like mine but thats another story.) Pours a minimal medium beige colored head over a very opaque and very dark brown body that looks oily during the pour. Some lace. Mouth is medium and slick with tingly carbonation, a carbonation much more apparent in the mouth than in the glass. Flavor of coffee and, oddly, olives? with doses of chocolate. Hits fairly sweet, finishes with a bit of hoppy bitterness and leaves a sweet aftertaste. Not really my cup of tea.

150 Founders Breakfast Stout United States Coffee Stout 3.9

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Having a late night breakfast, best time for that isn't it. I am not getting much coffee in the nose, some chocolate, some sweet fruit, chocolate covered strawberry? Aroma does not last long. Opaque very dark brown body topped with carmel colored head that is nice and frothy with good retention and very good lace. Mouth is a bit think for my taste, not creamy and certainly not something that " you can drink this ale with a fork." Carbonation is nice, just wish it had more body. Flavor is quite nice. Good bit of sour fruit, its the predominate flavor in mid taste. Some nice hop bitterness in the front end, hints of chocolate towards the end with a dry finish that hints at coffee. No flavors as big as the brewers description above would indicate. Alcohol very well masked with just a slight warming after. Don't get me wrong this is very tasty. Actually pretty vinous. A sweet brew with a dry finish. Very very drinkable, perhaps too much so, could be dangerous. Better as it warms, coffee predominates, pretty complex, pretty nice brew.
