26 Georg Schneider’s Wiesen Edel-Weisse Germany Hefeweizen 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Just a hint of banana in the nose and also a hint of smoke and sour orange and clove and pepper. Foggy gold body is appropriate with a somewhat smallish white head for the style with mediocre retention and lace. Mouth NOT as slippery as I would expect, but does have excellent carbonation, if pretty full for a hefe and almost chewy. Very sourdough yeast flavor, very different lots of orange and clove and lemmon and just very tart and sour, a ton of wheat in the flavor, and a bit of bubble gum. Hints of nuts along the way. Finishes with a surprising amount of hops bite that heads towards grapefruit. This is an odd hefe but very tasty!

27 Radeberger Pilsner Germany Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.3

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

Nose took a while to develop; hey, honey, peach. Pour a crystal clear pale yellow body topped with a pur tight white head that doesn't last and leaves a modicum of lace. Mouth is a thinish medium body. Flavor is clean and a bit timid. (This is what Bud, Miller, etc, should be to be a decent macro). There is a touch of sour fruit and the hopps are spot on for style, a nice balance between bittering and herbal notes. Underwhelming but very drinkable.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Drank this for the first time last night followed by several other brews at an Oktoberfest dinner I threw, (yes this is not an Oktoberfest brew) so didn't have the chance to really study and rate it. However I can say it is under rated here IMHO. Will not some impressions here and come back for re-rate in the future when I can spend some serious time with this wonderful lager. Mostly malt in the nose with a hint of hops, beautiful pale golden body with tight white head. Soft medium mouth with perfect carbonation. I love the taste of this one, lost of malt; bread and biscuit with a fair amount of grass and hints of lemon, very nice balanced with he hops, dry finish, extremely drinkable!

29 Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock Germany Doppelbock 4.1

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Sweet nose of raisins and figs and molasses with a good bit of anise as it warms. As it warms there is some chocolate/coffee tones. Small dirty brown head that subsides leaving a skim coat sits atop a very dark brown body with a hint of ruby. Mouth is full and a bit chewy with a very nice fizz. The flavor is complex with malt and hops masterfully balanced. Taste starts dry goes a bit sweet and bitter at the same time in mid taste, finishes tart/sour and aftertaste is very dry. There are tastes of raisin, chocolate, coffee ... lots of toasty malt notes with a perfectly balanced hop bitterness. The alcohol is a bit present at the end with a nice warming. This is very similar to Aventinus and its hard to say which I prefer, will have to do a side by side tasting! Wonderful Brew, absolutely World Class!

30 Moosbacher Weissbier Germany Hefeweizen 3.0

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Light nose of lemon and a hint of spice with some sour yeast. Medium amber body topped with a smallish white head that doesn't last and has minimal lace. Mouth is a bit watery, not slippery as I would have expected. Flavor is lemon, hints of cardamom, touch of pepper, finish is sour. Not as spiced as most heffes and a bit of a let down but drinkable.

31 Ayinger Ur-Weisse Germany Dunkel Weizen 2.9

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 6

Aroma is Cotton Candy, Beeman's gum (yup I am that old), fruity banana esters, and some pepper. Appearance if a properly foggy orange-copper body topped by an only decent (for a weizen) off white head with mediocre retention and no lace, very disappointing. Mouth is slick but lacks the tingle that should be present, again disappointing. So, OK, first dunkel weizen for me, had a lot of hefes, which i am quite fond of. Should this beer be as sweet as it is??? Sweetness dominates that taste but it does have banana and clove lurking underneath as well as bubblegum, all appropriate except the sweetness? Slightly cloying floral finish to this which is odd, violets? Aftertaste is wet and fairly balanced, aftertaste may be that best part of this beer.

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Fantastic head, complex and highly appealing aroma full of fruit and spice, easy on the mouth and incredibly soft for this strong a brew. Tastes as good 30 seconds after you swallow as it does when it first enters your mouth; just a wonderfully clean after-taste. This is that rare beer that sips just as good as it guzzles. The only way I have been able to "nurse" one is by pouring it a third at a time into my glass. And its worth savoring, you get the great head on all three pours and the flavor evolves as it is allowed to breathe a bit. Just an truely fantasic brew...absolutely top 5!

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

This is one odd Heffe! Nose of pine and lemon, i get no banana and no clove/corriander, maybe a little pepper. A bit on the pale side a foggy yellow body is topped by an OK white head that has poor retention and zero lacing. Mouth is thin which is OK for Hefe but it is also watery, not OK, could use more tingle and more slipperyness. Flavor...what flavor? OK you can taste lemmon and pine at first and then it goes a bit yeasty and finishes too sweet and almost grassy. I like my Hefe upfront and this is just timid to the core. I liked there Pils alot but this is a failure. OK its very drinkable if you are not expecting a Hefe, its Hefe-lite!

34 Spaten Oktoberfestbier Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Reviewing the bottle but it is quite similar to the draft. malt and biscuit and vanilla in the nose, no real hops nose at all. Clear medium amber body is topped by a decent head with little retention but nice lace. Mouth is medium bodied, fills the mouth nicely and is clean and the carbonation is done nicely. Nice carbonation level. Wow is this drinkable! Hits a little sweet with nice roasty maltedness, gives a quick hop tingle then finishes a bit sour. This could be a major major session beer, somewhat befitting its purpose!

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Malty biscuity nose, pale golden in color with average head and retention, nice lace. Light in the mouth, uncomplicated in flavor, good malt backbone, not too sweet, enough hops to make it interesting, finishes a touch bitter. I could see drinking a lot of this, good session, good for a lager but their is a touch of skunk. I do wonder though. The beer I am drinking is from a 6 of 12 ouncers and is called Oktoberfest (not Oktoberfestbier) and its in a scary green bottle! I don't know if this is a different animal then what others (BeerLover) have reviewed and the brewer's website is of no use at all; it doesn't even list mention brews!

36 Schneider Weisse Tap 5: Schneider-Brooklyner Hopfen Weisse Germany Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I really like this beer! Soft, floral nose also has lots of fruit in it; figs and cherries. There is also malt in the nose with some carmel notes. Huge merangue head thick and frothy that lasts. the lace is large, not fine, but nice. Cloudy pale golden-amber body. Mouthfeel is full with lots of satin slipping around, not chewy but quite enjoyable. The flavor is unique; half hefe and half imperial IPA---its an interesting battle and the brewers have pulled it off nicely! Flavor is very complicated. Lots of fruit, black cherry and orange. A bit of piney flavor as the aroma hits the tongue that quickly dissolves into a decent malt backbone. There is a bit of honey in the initial taste as well. The whole thing is nicely heated with the small presence of alcohol (mot of it nicely masked.)The finish is VERY clean but leaves a sour aftertaste.

37 Erdinger Festweisse Germany Hefeweizen 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Very unusual brew! Really big nose lots of malt and some hoppy fruit, not bananas or other esthers normally found in a hefe. large eggwhites head befitting the hefe style atop a very cloudy light peach/amber body. Light on the lacing. Mouthfeel is a bit fullish and not as slick as a normal hefe. Not a complicated flavor but nicely balanced for a fest. Not much hops, lots of malt, and some yeast... again befitting the hefe style but clove, and tropical fruit esters notably absent, this really is between hefe an marzen/oktoberfest. Quie interesting, very drinkable. A faint sourness to the finish which is dry.

38 Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier Germany Rauchbier 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Moderate short-lived foamy white head sits over a pale golden body. Lots of malt in the nose and a touch of vanilla and lightly burnt toast. Mouthfeel is thin and clean and, to my taste, a touch flat. The flavor is timid (it is a lager after all). Hits slightly sweet, which follows with an odd flavor from the smoke (reminds me a bit of smoked salmon...there is almost a slight fishy taste to the beer!). There is a decent, for a lager, hops bitterness and it ends with a slightly off-putting chemical taste, over all kind of fish and chips meets New Your street vendor roasted chestnut smoke. Or maybe its just smoked skunk. Ok its not my cup of tea. I am not eager to buy this again but I see BeerGuy got a good head from his pour so perhaps I wonder if this bottle had been mistreated. Eagle and Hannah rate it well to so I really should revisit some day. RERATE: 8/23/2013 Very nice lager..can only assume previous rating was on a poorly handled brew. Smoke barely detectable, really smooth and clean, chemical taste mentioned previously not detectable. Liked this a lot!!!!!!!!!

39 Paulaner Oktoberfest Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Mild toasty, malty nose with carmel/toffee tones, and a bit nutty; smells like dessert! A clear and very deep copper body with a dark beige head of medium size and retention and minimal lacing, it really looks like a beer! The mouthfeel is full and round with minimal carbonation. I can be a hop head but I really do like this flavor. It hits sweet but rapidly goes a bit more bitter then the nose predicts then goes candy sweet. Alcohol is fully masked. Finish is slow to develop but is nicely tart/sour. A brew of medium complexity with excellent balance for its type. And very sessionable.

Grapes and figs in the nose along with serious citrusy hops. Very dark amber body with minimal head and lace. Very fullish slippery mouth, flavor is sweet carmelized sugar at first hit followed by anice, pears, raisins, pepper and a strong sour and bitter finish, after taste of piney hops.

41 Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Marzen Germany Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Nose of roasted malt is mild, pours a smallish off-white head with poor retention and no lace sitting atop of a clar pale copper colored body with odd hints of yellow and green. Mouth is a nice medium body coats the palate well, but carbonation is under done. Flavor starts slightly sweet and malty, goes to hints of pear and fig, has a bit of a hops bite towards the end and finishes peppery and just a touch sour. Fix the carbonation and this would be a much better brew.RERATE 11/2011 Been drinking a lot of this on draft and its excellent, carbonation is fine, malt presence is very large, best Oktoberfest I have had.

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

this is a great hefe, really sets the style for others to match, the spicing is subtle yet present. Complicated and long-lasting nose...wheat, yeast, lemon, pepper and a deep not quite banana. Beautiful clouded gold body with a lovely very white head that has amazing retention, no lacing to speak of. Mouth is medium bodied with a bit of slipperyness and a nice tingle. Flavor is dead on style, lemmon, bready notes, alcohol fully masked, just the right amount of sour to play with the sweetness, no significant hops presence, and a crystal clean finish. This is a classic.

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

This is a mighty fine drink of water! Almost no nose but a touch of grassy aromas and a hint of biscuit. Pale yellow body is clear with a moderate white head and no lace. Mouth is VERY thin and lacking in carbonation. Flavor is somewhere less than mild and uncomplicated. There is a hint of bitter hops and a fair amount of grass with a slight sour finish. I would have guessed adjuncts in this brew but the brewer says no. Better than most water. RERATE 10/22/2016 Beer hasn't changed much but I think I was harsh originally. I get some brief short lived peach and biscuit in the nose so +1 there. I am getting decent lace this time so +1 there. Mouth is still thin but carbonation is decent so +2 there. Finish seems more dry then sour but very little taste here, but also very little off-putting taste. +2 there. Overall +1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Yummy, another good hefe! Opening nose of a typical hefe lotta tropical fruit and vanilla and bread and spice. TAstes like it smells with a soft slippery mouth feel. Pours a deep foggy golden amber with a big frothy head that disaptes rapidly, doesn't lace very well. Interesting, after it warms the character changes. The nose goes more towards spice and the hops begin to come out in the flavor, it becomes more complex.it hits sweet and sour and leaves a slightly bitter hopsy aftertaste. Not my very favorite hefe but variety is the spice of life. Had this tongiht with a spicy sweet Thai Cury and it paired better than I expected though, with theat particular meal, a stronger hops finishmight have been nicer.

A wonderful Hefe! A very prominent aroma as it should be. Pine forests and lemon grass, vanillia, bread and ripe berries, a great nose! Classic appearance, all, foggy and fine coming at you in a lovely unfiltered deep gold. Pours a great fluffy head, exactly right for its type with moderate endurance. Nice lace slides back down rapidly but leaves semi-circular wisps so you remember it was there. Mouthfeel is velvet carbonation. Taste is all Hefe..slightly astringent almonds, wheat and spice, hinting at raisins and tropical fruit followed by a wonderful bread/yeast flavor that is perfectly balanced. This is a real upfront hefe; not timid at all. Finishes extremely clean with a tiny hint of sour, burbs great too!

The quintessential euro-skunk! This used to be a favorite of mine before I drank any good beer and stacked up against Bud I guess you could understand that. Aroma is minimal-skunk, average color and head, moderate lace, slightly slimey mouthfeel, flavor is very light on the hops and in fact very light any flavor except skunk. In an average American bar (a place I spend lots of time in) this used to b the best beer you could buy. Now even my local working man's hangout at least offers some Sammie's.

47 Pinkus Pils Germany Bohemian / Czech Pilsener 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Well if you blindfolded me I might think I was drinking a very mild wheat beer. This may well be due to the fact that I haven't had much experience with true pilsners. Pours with a thick, not quite white, full head that lingers for a moderate time. Leaves a lovely lace on the side of the glass. The nose is what really reminds me of a wheat beer, to me its a slight smell of anise although I suspect its the same note that others refer to as figs. Mouth feel is silky, spectacularly so. Taste is soft and well balanced, the hops are hidden but there. I could take it a little more hoppy but the balance is wonderfully even. Notes of bread and lemongrass in the early taste (bespeaking the balance of the yeast and hops) citrus and grassy flavors in the mid tatse turning to a slighting bitter hoppy flavor and finishing with a VERY clean palate with just a hint of sweetness. The early Bavarian style pilsners were brewed with a hard water whereas the Czech pilsner used a soft water. These differences affected color and flavor significantly as they tended to require different yeasts. I believe this beer is a standard for the Czech (origianl) style of pilsner. This beer is extremly easy to drink, a really high-class session beer at its best. Revisited 1/10 Whats going on, the lace is gone...won't mark that down yet, will revisit again.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Pours out a nose of pepper, yeast, clove, and vanilla. In the glass its a medium copper body (perhaps a bit too much clarity) with a creamy head that dissipates rapidly to a nice layer of lace with a small ring of foam around the edges. Lace on the sides after a swig slowly and fully slips back down the glass; its a little slippery on the glass and in the mouth which is a quality I enjoy in a good Hefe. Mouth feel is slick, sof,t slippery and thin. This beer is well balanced and just a touch mild for a Hefe. It hits sweet, flowery, and peppery... then goes to a lemony tart and sour...finishes delightfully dry and leaves a mildly tart pepper in the aftertaste. It burbs great too!
