51 Gritty McDuffs Original Pub Style Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 2.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 6

Sweet malt in the nose, moderate amber color, OK head, watery mouth, way too buttery, not much abv i am guessing, finish with a touch of hops bittering, completely mediocre beer.

52 Berkshire Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.1

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Fairly standard EPA nose with a bit more biscuit and malty notes. Pale to medium gold body with a very nice head, good retention, OK lace. I loved he mouth of this, very creamy with carbonation just so. Quite full bodied for its style. I also really liked the flavor but said to myself, this is gonna get slaughtered on BP. I think the extra in "extra pale" has to do with very subtle (most will say under) hopping. Really good malt backbone is the predominant taste here but its nicely balanced, very smooth and drinkable! A really clean biscuity brew, check this one out! RERATE 6/8/13 A bit too sweet for an APA and a touch timid overall. Some grassy notes really a bit off for the style, knocking this one down a bit. RERATE 5/29/14 Just getting worse, came in a can this time (not necessarily a bad thing) , very small short lived head, nose that does not last, mouth thinner, funky buttery notes in the taste, still drinkable.

53 Captain Lawrence Fresh Chester Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Aroma, well had this in a wood fired pizza joint so it was tuff to tell, some pine, some malty sweetness. Pretty looking beer, average copper color, very nice head with very good lacing. Mouth is pretty full bodied and nicely slick with a fairly low level of tingle which is appropriate for the style. Flavor is buttery and musty which is again appropriate for the style. There is a (I think) stronger malt backbone to this then the brewer's description mentions, again appropriate to the style as it befits its English Pale birth line. It is more heavily hopped than an English Pale, some flavoring hops but predominately bittering hops. The finish if both bitter and slightly malty-sweet. This is very high on my list of American Pales, perhaps the leader.

54 Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Nice nose here, initially all malt but after a moment lots of citrus and pine hops (maybe a bit too much for a Pale Ale. Clear light amber body that is almost pinkish somehow (odd that)! Topped with a frothy white head with OK retention and quite nice lace. OK, its tastes a bit more hoppy and sweet then I like my Pales. A bit thin in the mouth, perhaps a bit under carbonated. First nose after pour spoke of a proper malt backbone but I don't taste it much here. Actually less malt presence than I would expect in a good PA. Slightly off medicinal aftertaste. Maybe tastes like a can (and I have had some great beers in cans!) Canned less than 2 months ago so that should be fairly fresh. I'm giving this beer bad marks for; not really being a Pale Ale, more like a watery PA, odd color, watery mouth, off taste. I wonder if I just got a bad one, can't wait to read other reviewers I respect here. Rerate 6/7/14 as above but I now get a good malt backbone, still a bit too hop-predominant for the style, but damn good drinking. Carbonation level is spot on this time and not medicinal. If htey called this an IPA I would kick the marks up even a bit more.

55 Terrapin Rye Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.3

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Malt and rye in the nose and some sweet flowers. Pours a pale copper with so so head that provides OK lace. Good mouth, medium and a bit chewy, would prefer more carbonation. Rye predominates in the taste, with hops at the end, all good but this beer needs more complexity; needs something sweet in the middle and a little more hops for flavor, the hops are mostly bittering. Could be an interesting brew but just misses.

56 Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 4.0

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Very little happening in the nose. Light copper body with a white, moderate head that leaves a bit of lace. Mouth is medium bodied and a touch under-carbonated for my tastes. Malts are a bit on the sweet side, some carmel, hops are citrus and pine, not much spice. Finish is a bit sticky and sweet. Overall a fairly mild APA but well brewed and very sessionable, and available in the only smoking bar at the Atlanta airport (concourse A).(airport pricing) re-rate on draft this time hitting the spot on a hot and muggy evening not sure what was going on before when I reviewed it from the airport in Atlanta but damn this is really tasty salad hop character a little hint of wheat body is just fine leaving decent lace completely drinkable just be a spot on

57 Flying Dog Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 2.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 5

Nice nose if fairly standard, fruity, citrus, a bit yeasty, maybe a a bit bright for the style, as in where's the malt? Light orange/copper body that appears still is topped with an OK white head that leaves moderate lace. Mouth is very watery with carbonation missing. Flavor, what can I say, i think they took "Pale" way too literally. No objectionable flavor notes. Ultimately non-complex, some sweetness that is suspicious in that is a sweetness without flavor, a little bit of bitter at the end, and very little in the middle. Certainly lacking in the flavor of any grain bill, solid malt backbone needed to produce a pale ale is completely missing. Drinkable and so is my tap water.

58 White Birch Hop Session Ale United States American Pale Ale 4.5

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 9

Nose of vanilla, cookie dough, and a balance of citrus and pine from the hops. Brewed in small batches and unfiltered (this bottle was brewed a month ago) it presents a slightly foggy honey gold body with a nice white head that is frothy with excellent retention and decent lace. This sucker has a wonderful mouth on it, slippery with wonderful carbonation its medium bodied. Flavor...what can I say, PERFECTION, and I have had a lot of APA's. Hop-heads (and I am one) might complain but there is a ton of hoppy goodness in here but it is perfectly balanced. Very solid malt backbone and an absolutely clean dry finish..the magic here is that it presents as sweet and yet not sweet. The perception is of a sweet IPA but its only for an instant and then gone..magical indeed. Hop notes, like the nose, are balanced (and I suppose thats where the "Anglo" in the name comes in) between resiny and citrusy, hitting slightly sweet and citrusy and the start and finishing with an absolutely clean bitterness leaving the mouth entirely clean. I've got 15 minutes to get to the store and clean them out, this stuff is AMAZING!

59 Berkshire Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Deep malt nose, slightly roasted, carmel, prunes, vanilla. Dark clear copper body with a decent offwhite head that has good retention and minimal lace. Mouth is a bit slick, foamy, not quite chewy but close. Flavor is deep, a bit of astringency in mid taste with a sweet but clean finish.I taste some banana, dark ripe fruit, a hint of pepper and maybe a touch clove-like. Alcohol is present. Lots of malty goodness here, with very minimal hops just to balance. Sweeter than most APA's but pretty darn tasty! Reminiscent of lagunitas Brown Sugga.

60 Highland St. Terese's Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7

Nose is a touch faint...but really nice. Malty biscuit pepper, some floral elements, maybe lavender. Clear pale copper body topped by a nice white had with good retention, nice lace and good skim coat. Mouth slightly thin, a bit too carbonated. Taste is a bit thin as well; everything muted. Needs more malt presence; hops bittering is about right for style, maybe a bit too sweet, just thin, no alcohol present. Majorly sessionable I suspect. No objectionable notes, just too timid.

62 Founders Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.8

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Vanilla, lemon, lavender and a touch of bread in the nose, nice nose. Pours a foggy pale copper body topped with a moderate white head with some retention and little lacing. Carbonation is very nice in the mouth which is medium body and coats the palette nicely. Flavor profile is spot on for an APA. Considerable malt backbone, none of the butteryness of an English Pale, nicely bitter for the style, fairly neutral in flavor with the hops just predominating, dry finish with a bit of bitter. Well done.

63 Goose Island 312 Urban Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Nice nose on this bad boy, quite hoppy for a Pale Ale, some pine and citrus, a hint of malt, could be a bit more malty in the nose. Pours a medium gold body with a very nice white head with good retention and very good lace. Mouth is a touch thin for the style with nice carbonation level. Flavor is not as bitter as the hops in the nose which are mostly aromatic, a bit more bitter and less butter than an english pale which right for the APA style. Moderate malt flavors a hint of sweet with a dry bitter finish with a touch of arming from the alcohol. This is nicely done!

66 Atlantic Bar Harbor Summer Ale United States American Wheat 3.2

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Just back from a tour of the brewery where I picked up a six, very nice tour and tasting of a very small brewery btw. Nose like a pils; yeast, grass/wheat, some lemon. Fairly pale gold body topped by a minimum white head with little retention and no lace. Mouth is medium bodied, carbonation a bit underdone. Flavor is mild, a good bit of sweetness, touch of hop bittering at the end, grassy with some citrus, extremely drinkable but nothing special....my wife liked it.

67 Slumbrew Sittin' on Hop of the World White IPA United States American Wheat 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Had to choose a category for this ale, it really is a hybrid. Long-lasting nose of peaches, grass, vanilla, and a hint of pepper. Very nice in the glass, a light copper body topped with a medium but long-lasting head with moderate lace and tiny bubbles that continue to rise long after the pour. Mouth is full-bodied, slick, slightly creamy, with lovely carbonation. With talk of peach puree I was (needlessly as it turns out) worried about the flavor. Its a fairly straightforward flavor with some peach adding a nice sweetness, the hops combined with the wheat malts provide more tartness than bitterness. This brew has tang and a dry finish with just a slight herbal aftertaste (possibly a hint of peach pit in the aftertaste). The alcohol is well masked. Hybrids can be scary, this is a very successful hybrid.

68 Magic Hat Circus Boy United States American Wheat 2.4

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

I will come back and revise this review at some point. This is a review from memory. Took a siz to a dinner party a few nights ago. Was excited as I love hefes and I like Magic Hat Brewery a lot so my expectations were high. I am also at a disadvantage as I had them out of the bottle. This beer failed miserably. Very pale nose (might have been enhanced by a glass but I really did try to work the nose out of the bottle.) Appearance, who knows. Mouthfeel nothing special, certainly not silky or velvety. Flavor!!!!!!! BAD!!!!!!!! I like thier #9 alot and this tasted like an off version of #9. It had that apricot flavor which I hav to say is nice i the 9 but SUCKS in a Hefe! Carbonation was strong in a bad way, none of that fine soft fiz that a hefe is all about. And all the key notes of a hefe seemed absent, clove...yeast, pine, citrus all missing! I am pretty sure in a blind test I would not identfy this as a hefe and might not identify it as wheat. VERY DISSAPOINTING!

69 Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen United States American Wheat 1.4

Aroma: 3 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 2 | Overall: 2

Harpoon makes some good brews but this is NOT one of them. One wonders what they were doing when they released this Hefe. Aroma: the nose is short lived and while it hints at all the lovely properties of a hefe it is VERY mild. Appearance: The body is a bit of the yellow side of golden and has that lovely hefe unfiltered appearance but the head is terrible. What is the point of a hefe with a small head that disapears rapidly and leaves third rate lacing? None that I can think of. Mouthfeel: Not soft or satin or sliperey, not a hefe mouth at all! Flavor: I have never had a hefe that tasted skunky before this brew is a first! Extremly uncomplicated, bitter without fruity or yeasty balance, bad...bad...BAD! Harpoon should drink some good European hefes and go back to the drawing board because this beer sucks! (OK LOOK, its better than Bud but bud is what it is, this beer claims to be a hefe IT IS NOT!

70 Magic Hat Hocus Pocus United States American Wheat 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

I like Hat's offerings a lot but hated "CircusBoy", their hefe and my previous review was of Harpoon's hefe, also a great dissapointment,so it was with trepidation that I approached Hocus Pocus, Magic Hat's seasonal wheat offering. Its pretty damn drinkable! Aroma starts all yeast but later developes nice fruit...lemons and oranges, with a hint of black pepper. Pours a clear medium gold with a head that is big but maybe a bit to much about froth. Head dissipates rapidly and leaves nice lacing. Carbonation is nicely done providing a silky mouth feel with a nice tingle.Flavor makes this beer very drinkable. The wheat is up front with a very smooth malty balance, it hits tart, sweetness and fruit follow and ends crisp and clean with a tiny hint of sour. This could be a major session beer for a hot summer day. (This review is completely rewritten...the first beer out of the six was not nearly this good, maybe it was me, maybe there is a consistancy problem. Original review vcame out in the very low 2's and now its up to a 3.9...thats a HUGE difference!) When drinking this one I had just finished some very hot salsa and HocusPocus went great with it. I highly recommend this Magic Hat offering.

71 Samuel Adams Summer Ale United States American Wheat 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Aroma is lemom grass, honey, clover and yeast. Its a very mild nose. Pours a deep amber body that is foggy and starts with a large foamy head that dissipates moderately leaving moderate lace. Mouthfeel is fuzzy, tingly, light and clean. Flavor is mild but lovely balance. It hits floral and a subtle hint of lemmon, hopps and wheat are present, moves to honey and follows with a nice bit of bitter, leaving almost no aftertaste. This is a very well done beer, perfect for a summer cookout and a strong contender for session beer of the season.

72 Samuel Adams Dark Depths Baltic IPA United States Baltic Porter 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Call it a Porter...why not! Nose...brown sugar, molasses, prunes, coffe. Not quite opaque dark brown body is topped by a very nice, frothy beige head with very good retention and very good lace. Mouth maybe a touch thin for a Porter but fills the buds nicely. Carbonation is subtle. With all that nose the flavor is a bit one-noted in that its the same start to almost the finish. Odd, most of the taste actually is in the finish where the hops come into play. There is some chocolate and prune in the front end, and the finish is long with some sweetness of toffee and then a big astringency that is NOT unpleasant, finish is drying and cleaner than expected.

73 Framing Hammer United States Baltic Porter 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Hints of coffee and chocolate and raisin in the nose. Pours an opaque deep deep brown body with a caramel-colored head that is decent and has nice retention and very nice lace. Mouth is creamy and full bodied with a nice slickness. Favor is on the sweet side with again, hints of chocolate and coffee and cotton candy but its nicely battered as well, very nice hop level at 45 IBU. Finish is surprisingly clean and balanced. 10% abv is well masked, the alcohol is just a bit warming. WELL DONE! Side Note; BeerPal forces porters to be listed as ales and then describes them as usually lagers, which this one is,,,,, whats up with that?

74 Goose Island Matilda United States Belgian Ale 2.9

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4

(I will have to rerate with a new bottle at some point, this one must have been off, label Oct 2014, abc upped to 7%))A bit winey in the nose, lots of hay, vanilla, apple, licorice, subtle clove. Medium peachy/amber clear body topped with minimal head that lasts well and laces OK. Mouth is surprisingly creamy yet a bit light bodied. Oh God, the flavor... this is just not right!!!! Bubblegum and clove are followed immediately by a really nasty hit... what is it??? Motor oil? Aspirin? Ends with an artificial-tasting sour note. This is on Odd duck from Goose Island.

75 Allagash Little Brett United States Belgian Ale 3.3

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

(to be fair this bottle was born a year ago)OK, first off I had to pick a style (on that other beer site it would be called an American Brett, here Belgian seems the closest fit.) Pineapple and grass in the nose. Pours a thin head over a very pale straw body with no lace. Mouth is thin but not watery, perhaps a bit under-carbonated. I have become fond of this flavor profile. Pineapple and grass, maybe a bit of tobacco, just slightly sour with a fairly clean finish. Its more than the sum of its parts.
