51 Berkshire Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale United States American Pale Ale 3.1

Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

Fairly standard EPA nose with a bit more biscuit and malty notes. Pale to medium gold body with a very nice head, good retention, OK lace. I loved he mouth of this, very creamy with carbonation just so. Quite full bodied for its style. I also really liked the flavor but said to myself, this is gonna get slaughtered on BP. I think the extra in "extra pale" has to do with very subtle (most will say under) hopping. Really good malt backbone is the predominant taste here but its nicely balanced, very smooth and drinkable! A really clean biscuity brew, check this one out! RERATE 6/8/13 A bit too sweet for an APA and a touch timid overall. Some grassy notes really a bit off for the style, knocking this one down a bit. RERATE 5/29/14 Just getting worse, came in a can this time (not necessarily a bad thing) , very small short lived head, nose that does not last, mouth thinner, funky buttery notes in the taste, still drinkable.

52 Big Tree Brewing Mr. Waterbury United States IPA 3.7

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Big Citron nose knocks you out when you open it. Moderately hazed body pale apricot with small white head that leaves little lace. Nice medium mouth slightly slippery low but decent carbonation with a little tingle. The malts are sweet the citra is intense and not very balanced the finish is dry it's quite drinkable.

53 Bios Vlaamse Bourgogne Belgium Flanders Oude Bruin 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Nose: dark cherries, sour apple, sweet tarts. Cordovan body with a thin beige head ..good retention and some lace. Mouth is thin with a nice tingle. Alcohol totally masked, hits sour, ends sweet, some raspberry, for sure some sweet-tarts, this is odd but i get a bit of beef fat (in a good way) then ending is pretty clean, after taste is light citrus. This is really pretty damn tasty. Would not be my regular drink but its a nice change of pace.

54 Bird Post United States Witbier 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Mild nose: pepper, cream cycle, tangerine. Fogged, VERY pale lemon-colored body, not a lot of head, no lace. Mouth is light but not watery, very nice carbonation, slightly slick. Flavor is growing on me.; Tart, lemon, bitter greens, sour finish, not your usual APA but tasty!

55 Black Isle Export Oatmeal Stout United Kingdom Imperial Stout 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Chocolate and licorice notes as well as grape juice in the nose. A vigorous pour produces a decent frothy camel-colred head with good retention and decent lace. Body is opaque very dark brown with a hint of ruby. Mouth is medium and a bit chewy and quite fizzy, maybe too fizzy. Licorice is the predominant flavor for sure with some bitter chocolate and burnt grain at the ending. This rounds out a bit after a few swigs, that initial Licorice hit is a bit shocking, but now I am starting to enjoy the brew. There is some black cherry flavor hidden in there, starts sweet and goes bitter in the middle with a surprisingly clean aftertaste. 2nd Black Aisle I have had and both are high quality beer making.

56 Black Isle Organic Export Scotch Ale United Kingdom Scottish Ale 4.2

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Added this beer as it does not appear to be the same as the Black Isle Scotch Ale, the abv on that is 4.5, this export is 7.9 Aroma of toasted carmelly malts, cotton candy, and some vinous notes. Deep brown body with ruby hints that is not quite opaque topped with a moderate head that is off white and leaves a long lasting skim coat with little lace. The mouth if fairly full, slick and tingly, carbonation nicely done, really fills the palate. This is a sweet beer with a clean finish, quite well done. Leaves hints of coffee at the end with some tobacco. Up front its ripe dark fruit and toffee. The hops are minimal and indistinct but they balance the flavor nicely. Not normally my cup of tea but this is a very nice beer. Alcohol a bit present as a warming in the finish. Suspect this profile will round out and be a bit more complex as it warms. Well done!

57 Blizzard of Hops United States IPA 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Mild nose, pine, papaya, grains of paradise. Clear gold body with nice continuing carbonation, frothy white head , moderate lace. Medium mouth, good tingle, fully coating..Pine and fruit combine in the mouth and are hard to pick out separately which is a nice change. A bit of warming alcohol at the end. Leaves the palette coated. but fairly neutral aftertaste. This is a one note beer but its a rndeally really nice note, very quaffable!

58 Blue Moon Belgian White / Belgian Moon United States Witbier 3.5

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

REviewing the bottle, but I like the draft better. Not much nose and what is there is orange and citrus. Ok appearance, decent head over a nice foggy dark gold body with nice effervesance. Poor lacing. Mouth feel is well done, smooth medium full, foamy. Flavor in the bottle not nearly as strong as the draught. Its deinately a bit insipid. Hits dry, goes sweet with some orange , slightly carmelized, corriander, tart finish, perhaps a bit more hops than one would expect. Drinkable but nothing to write home about, I am kicking it up to a 7 here because the draught flavor is MUCH better. Funny for a beer I drink often this one is getting fairly low marks!

59 Blue Point Hoptical Illusion United States IPA 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Nose is minimal and fades fast, whats there is standard. Pours a deepish gold body with a fair head that leaves decent lace. Mouth is OK, could have some more tingle and is medium bodied. Flavor is mild for an IPA but well balanced, alcohol well masked. Hops are a bit perfumy, cloying at first but OK after a while, malt is solid, finish is dry and bitter. A decent sessionable east coast IPA with just a slight medicinal taste. 2/3/2016 more hops bittering and a hint of licorice in the finish.

60 Blue Point Rastafa Rye Ale United States Rye Beer 3.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Mild nose, citrus hop notes, pepper, and bread. Surprisingly light in color, a medium gold with a hint of orange, very nice frothy head. Very nice effervescence continues long after the pour. Nice frothy lace. Mouth is light and slick, almost watery, highly carbonated. Very unusual flavor profile. Lots of orange citrus upfront, a slight oily tartness towards the end, fair amount of bread in the middle. Alcohol is present and warming. Overall interesting and a bit thin.

61 Blue Point Spring Fling Ale United States Amber Ale 3.5

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Very ale like in appearance and flavor, this lager pours a deep copper clear body with a thin off white head that has moderate retention and no lace. Ale like nose of carmel malt and spicy hops. Medium bodied mouth is nicely carbonated. Tastes like a copper or brown ale, lots of carmel, a touch sweet, finish is fairly dry. Not complex, no standard lager flavors, good session brew.

62 Boddingtons Pub Ale United Kingdom Bitter 3.6

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Nose similar to Duvel, lots of funk some grass. Described as a pale gold but I would say a pale amber with rocky white head and medium lace. Medium mouth, creamy, and a bit lacking in carbonation. Sweet and sour flavor with not much complexity, decent session brew.

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

a whole lotta pine in the nose with some citrus overtones. A moderately pale golden color slightly foggy with a white frothy head and decent lace. Mouthfeel is fuzzy, tingly and nice. Flavor.. hops, hops, hops! Oragne peel, pine tar, coal and just a hint of figs. Bitter bittr bitter! Not complicated at all, straight up front hops, followed by hops and ending with hops. The alcohol is well hidden but its got a good kick. this one is for hop heads. (burps grapefruit)

65 Breckenridge Vanilla Porter United States Spiced Beer 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9

Vanilla, prune, and citric acid in the nose. Pours a clear very deep ruby with an offwhite head with god retention and no lace. Mouth is creamy with a full body. The unbeerlike flavor is appropriate for the style. Vanilla and chocolate dominates with a nice hop tingle at the end, alcohol is warming, pretty nicely done although not my cuppa.

66 Broad Brook Brewing Hopstillo IPA United States IPA 4.4

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Big ass citrus nose on this sucker! biscuit and jam undertones. Pours a lovely, though hazed, medium apricot colored body topped with a big rocky head that is white, lingers, and leaves fantastic lace, take away the haze and this would be a 10. Mouth is s touch chewy/creamy for an IPA but very nice and medium to full bodied with spot on carbonation. There are tropical hints in the flavor profile but it has some nice burnt malts backing it, the bitter hits at the finish after tropical fruit with a hint of pine. This is a damn good brew from my home state! The alcohol has a nice delayed warming.

67 Broad Brook Brewing Porter's Porter United States Porter 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Mild nose of cotton candy and roasted malt. Dark brown body topped by a caramel colored moderate head that leaves a skim coat and slight lacing. The mouth is a bit thin and a bit watery. Flavor is coffee chocolate black cherry. A little cotton candy finishes slightly sweet. Suspect the flavor profile would round out nicely if allowed to warm more. The local was really serving it at a colder temperature than it should have. Unfortunately I have to get home and cook dinner for the wife so I won't taste it at a proper temperature.

68 Broken Symmetry Stratus United States IPA 4.3

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

So let's just start by saying this is a really wonderful beer. The nose is a tropical New England IPA nose it's tropical and it's got some Clementine and just some hints of grass very little malt in the nose. Pours a very light-colored copper body but a really nice white head that leaves a good skim coat and very good lace. The body is almost clear unusual for a New England IPA, into my eyes quite pleasing. The mouth is medium-bodied with spot-on carbonation and nice slipperiness. Display her profile is really a classic IPA profile it's got a lot of pine resin and just a hint of that newfangled tropical coming through. There's a whole lot of green in this taste compared to most New ENGLAND IPA's. Tobacco leather caramel corn bitter salad greens a little bit salty. This beer is blowing me away

69 Brooklyn Ale (Pennant Ale) United States English Pale Ale 3.9

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Generally it seems to me that Pale Ales are underrated here, perhaps the style is just not very popular; milder than APA's or IPA's. the nose on this is a mix of big malts and cirtusy hops, fairly standard for the style. A nice clear light copper body with a good frothy off white head, moderate retention and lace. Good mouth, a light medium body slick, nice fiz. Carmel malt flavor provides a decent backbone with a stronger hops bite then might be expected, this tastes more like a light IPA than a Pale Ale. Finish is dry and clean, alcohol not present (and I miss it.) This is a very acceptable session brew but there are better American Pales out there, I like Geary's alot more. Nothing wrong here, just a bit unbalanced, not enough malt but very drinkable. Rerate: 12/12/08 What was I thinking/drinking? Lovely malt backbone, great hops balance at the end, really nice brew!!!!!

70 Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout United States Imperial Stout 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A very floral noise which is something of a surprise, with some citrus and some fig, the nose is almost winey. They aren't kidding about "black" this stuff is opaque even with a bare 60 watt bulb behind it. Slowly develops a nice dark brown head that is sizable and lasts well (good job considering the Abv)Good lacing. Mouthfeel is creamy and full and a bit fizzy. Flavor is predominated with alcohol, its the first and last taste. I get quite a few complex flavors, concord grape, rum, strawberries, burnt coffee in the end taste, fairly clean finish with booze burn. There is also chocolate in the mid taste. There is a sourness to this brew as well, in fact sour and alcohol are the main tastes and there is also a bit metallic in the finish. This is a brave experiment that doesn't quite succeed, IMHO but it is worth tasting. I will probably cellar the four bottles I have left and check them out in a year or so, if it mellows a bit and loses the metallic taste it will get a higher rating. I have now noticed that BP is classifying htis as a Rauchbier and from the flavor I can understand that, the taste that I find metallic may well be a smoky flavor. The brewery itself classifies this as an Imperial Stout; they do mention specially roasted malts, perhaps this actually is a hybrid of rauchbier and stout, an interesting experiment.

71 Brooklyn Blast United States Imperial IPA 3.9

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Huge hops nose blast of pine followed with some floral notes and some dark ripe fruit, maybe a hint of vanilla. Peachy body that is foggy (unfiltered?) topped with a nice white head with medium retention and decent lace. Mouth is a bit foamy, medium bodied, slick, and a bit creamy. Big flavor follows the nose. Apricot, pine, some walnut, oddly a bit of grassy funk, alcohol quite present. Bitter finish that is not quite dry.

72 Brooklyn East India Pale Ale United States IPA 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Strong nose of pine and lemon with malt present. Pours a large egg-white head with tight foam that leaves very good lace. The body is clear and the copper color is slightly pale, this is a very nice looking beer! Mouth is medium and a bit chewy, nice tingle, coats the mouth nicely and the IBU's really kick the rear outside of the tongue. This beer is quite bitter (in a very good way). Flavor , well there is a big mouth of grapefruit, some sweet fruit, some pine notes, a late-in-the-taste carmel flavor, with may be a hint of concord grape. A dry bitter finish follows the sweetness. Also a hint of nuttiness in the finish. Another excellent offering from Bkly, probably the best large brewer in the US.

73 Brooklyn Lager United States Lager 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Drinking this right after a lovely Bklyn Pennant Ale which is the wrong order to drink em in, oh well...here goes. Mild nose but nicely blended hops which are citrusy, a touch of vanilla, and a wee hint of roasty malts. Very nice color for a lager, light copper clear body, very lovely frothy head with good lace. Mouth seems just a bit thin but well rounded. Very little taste up front but finishes quite dry and bitter not much malt flavor but some interesting pepper and lemon peel. Perhaps a bit of chemical in the late taste but still ends clean. Overall a good American lager, a good brew to slip to a Bud drinker, very easy to drink. Like all Bklyn beers this is wonderfully balanced.

74 Brooklyn Local 1 United States Belgian Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

I have had a couple of the big bottles and the flavor seemed to vary somewhat. Pop the cork and it pours a hazey medium copper with a big head and nice retention with good lace. Complex nose with alcohol, spice and yeast all present. Mouth if full and smooth. The first time I tried this the taste was quite yeasty and reminded me of a good organic lager. Second time around ( and maybe the first time was me, not the bottle, it wasn't the first beer I had that evening) it presented a very complex profile; still plenty of yeast with lots of clove-like spiceyness and a lot of fruit... figs and earthyness. Finish is rich and not quite dry. In a blind test I might have thought this was a heffe. A very well done American version of a Belgain Strong. By the way, local 1 is the stage hands union in NYC, coincidence?

75 Brooklyn Oktoberfest United States Marzen / Oktoberfest 3.8

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 8

Very solid malt hit int he nose followed by pine and pepper, very nice nose! A very reddish deep copper transparent body is topped off by a nice beige head of medium retention with moderate lace and a lovely skim coat. Mouth is medium bodied with a delayed sting and is nicely slick without cloying, carbonation is spot on. Flavor takes a moment to develop in the mouth, there is a strong malted back bone with a surprising amount of fruity notes, tart apple and deep fig, follows nicely bitter and finishes a tiny touch sweet, only negative is a slight chemical taste to the finish.
