  • Clay Pipe Midnight Special Pale Ale

    Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 8

Pours a golden yellow with a very nice white head. Both retention and lacing are impressive. Aromas are fruity malt, some honey character, hops, and just a hint of caramel. Sweetness somewhat dominates the palate but it is balanced out quite well by the bitter hops in this. Honey is a definite characteristic as quite a bit of fruitiness (grapes, cherries, pears, green apple). Mouthfeel is nice and makes this one really easy to drink. Overall, an interesting and quite enjoyable take on the Pale Ale style. I feel pretty fortunate to have been able to try this as I understand that the run on this was extremely limited.

Pours a deep brown with some ruby tints. Head is somewhat large, tan, and sticks around for a while. Lacing is nice as well. Aromas of espresso, some fruit (figs, dates, plums), and just a hint of chocolate. Somewhat musty, which isn't nearly as bad as one would think. Taste is impressive really. Loads of sweetness up front, followed by just a hint of brandy, maybe some scotch flavors. Roasted and chocolate malts, along with a pleasant hop bitterness balance this one out quite nicely. Alcohol is apperent, but very very minute in the massive flavors that meld with it. Some fruitiness as well (see above) Mouthfeel is great. Carbonation isn't overwhelming, but is certainly well qualified in the beer. Overall, an excellent beer. I have 2 other McKenzies chilling in my refrigerator and if this is any indication of their abilities, I just can't wait to try them.

Pours a very hazy pale golden color with a small white head. Retention is as to be expected with the style, but collar is nice. Smell is fluffy wheat, spices (coriander), orange an other citrus. Taste is sweet malts, wheat, orange, coriander. Slight hop bitterness in the finish. Exceptionally drinkable and very smooth. Overall, very nice, definitely worth a try if you can get it. I could easily drink this one on cold winter nights or on hot summer days, very quenching and just overall, very good.

  • McKenzie 5 Czars Imperial Stout

    Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Pours an opaque black. Very thick light brown head tops this one. Retention is impressive and lacing is just so so. Smell is coffee, bakers chocolate, slight vinious qualities, and just a hint of smoked malts. Not much fruit in this one, but it still smells pretty damn good. Taste is espresso, dark chocolate, very slight smoky character. A little yeastie character and just a bit of port wine. Hops are present, but not overwhelming. Mouthfeel is nice. Carbonation is nice, not slick or oily at all. Overall, an excellent Imperial Stout. I would recommend it to anyone. The only reason the drinkability suffers a bit is because this is a fairly heavy flavored beer and I just don't think you could drink more than one in a night...it sure would be fun to try though.

Pours an almost neon orange with a purely white head. Retention is okay, but lacing is quite good. Smell is wheaty malts, some citrus, spices, some herbs (lavender). Very floral, and just a hint of sweetness. Alcohol is undetectable. Taste is a definite wheaty presence. Lavender and camomile are very present in the taste. Extremely floral. Just a hint of hop bitterness as this one finishes out. Some citrus flavors in there as well. There is a definite bite to this one as should be expected of a beer like this. A bit of yeastiness also lingers. Slight, very slight, alcohol heat in the finish. Mouthfeel of this one is kind of weird. Carbonation is okay, but this is still somewhat syrupy, which I'm not particularly thrilled with in a Saison. Overall, an interesting take on the style to say the least. It's enjoyable, but I'm not sure how much of this one I could drink in one sitting (22 oz seems to be enough though).
