After drinking a few of these (12 oz bottles at 48 °F) over the course of a few days and reflecting on what a classic ESB (e.g. Fullers) should be, I think the Bridgeport ESB is a respectable, perhaps even fine, example of the English style. I am a hop head so the “Bitter” accolade always throws me. An ESB should not be heavily hopped (too bad). Appropriately, malt dominates this brew and style. So......the ale is transparent with a golden honey color. There is very little head, apparent effervescence or lacing. However, some effervescence is released on each sip which accentuates the somewhat watery mouth feel (tends to fill out toward the back of the palette). Aroma is dominated by roasted pale malt (think open hearths in a country cottage and hot breakfast cereal/oatmeal) with honey and fruit undertones Taste is malt, fruit and diacetyl, some hop bitterness with perhaps a bit of alcohol. Finishes dry with some lingering bitterness.

Straw transparent color with moderate white head that dissipates too soon (not unlike a mass produced lager in appearance - hmmm not good). Aroma is very light and dominated by wheaty-grassy malt and just a wisp of sweetness. Ample carbonation gives some texture and lively mouth feel. A crisp light taste is dominated by wheat malt. Non offensive to the most sensitive of palettes. Overall - fairly one dimensional, not much going on here. Serve this ice cold with a slice of lemon to your girl friend who hates beer - she'll love it!

This is a very easy drinking, middle of the road ale intended for the masses. With the sophistication of bubble gum and soda water it is completely non-offensive and best quaffed in the summer months. If your looking for something distinctive and true to classic style don’t look to Shiner. They sold out to mass marketing long ago. I’m sure this Hefe is exactly what the brewers intended which turns out to be - not bad! In my opinion - probably the best Shiner has to offer. Perhaps I got a fresh sixer (who knows – no brew date!), but the aroma and taste were exactly as stated on the bottle and probably in the correct order “wheat, honey, orange and lemon peel” Do you want honey in your Hefe-Weszen? Maybe not, but this stuff is very drinkable. If I were Shiner CEO I might change the name to “Honey Hefeweszen”. What ever the name - I’ll probably buy it again.

  • Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

Pours your standard clear (slightly hazy) pale ale amber orange color. Little head, little effervescence and moderate lacing. Don’t know when this four pack of 12 oz bottles was brewed/shipped. No marks on the bottle or packaging - Why is that? Hops, hops, hops! Not bad if you like HOPS (I do!). Aroma – HOP city. Mouth feel is that of a average non-exuberant pale ale. Oh! – did I mention the HOPS! Everything here is secondary to the – HOPS, but that’s OK if you like - HOPS (I do!). Aftertaste is dry and dominated by – HOPS. All in all, a damn good IPA – a mans IPA. Yes, yes evokes memories of lazy days in the British officer clubs with slow moving ceiling fans in the far flung outposts of empire during the Raj.

Yeaaa Baby! 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark opaque ruby red with small short lasting cream colored head and very little lacing. Aroma is rich – reminiscent of a decadent chocolate desert or, amazingly, like a “tootsie roll” for you baby boomers. Inviting! Taste is a blend of semi sweet chocolate (next bottle please – this stuff is going down like an ice cold coke on a hot day), coffee, and cola. Slightly effervescent on the tongue – great texture and mouth feel. Not too sweet or heavy. A bit dry on the finish. In short, a new favorite.
