  • Madison River Salmon Fly Honey Rye
    rated 3.1 15 years ago

    Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

The Honey Rye poured a beautiful, filtered amber color, that was slightly more orange-tinged than yellow. Though the beer looked to be a fruity and sweet concoction, especially considering the statement of the use of Montana honey, this Madison River creation was actually more on the milder side. The nose was slightly sweet with just a dash of honey poking through, but mainly just hints of barley tickled the nose. The taste sensations were nothing overly astonishing or overbearing, with the bitter beer flavor being the most noticeable accent near the front of the beer. The honey flavor wasn’t overly pronounced either, with a subtle nudging of sweet hitting the tongue before settling into a nice current of rye that added a different flavor profile than your standard IPA or malt-based beverage. www.barbeerians.com

I have to believe that this is as close to a German Oktoberfest beer that you can get in Montana, if not the U.S., and the drinkability of this dark lager is pretty high, mainly due to the overall pure and smooth texture that leaves you refreshed after each sip. Bayern’s beer is really growing on me now. Give it a try for yourself, and I think you too will become a convert, if you haven’t already switched by now. www.barbeerians.com

  • Lone Peak Hippy Highway Oatmeal Stout
    rated 3.6 15 years ago

    Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

This dryly robust stout isn’t going for broke and isn’t looking to be a meal in a glass. Rather, Hippy Highway treads along at a nice, even pace without the added sweetness other stouts can have. Comparing this to Deschutes’s exquisite Obsidian Stout isn’t far-fetched, but Hippy Highway clearly doesn’t pack the same sort of alcoholic emphasis. If you’ve ever been reluctant to try an oatmeal stout over regular dark beers, give the Hippy Highway a try. You might be surprised to find that after a long day of road-tripping, the only highway you’ll be ready to see again is Hippy Highway. www.barbeerians.com
