Beer's to your health!

General Beer Discussion by SUMMERWINEFAN

Okay, we've all seen media reports that wine and beer are good for us. Here's some more good news: According to a new Canadian study, beer can lower risks of both heart disease and cataracts by up to 50%. How? Both wine and beer contain polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that protect us from hardening of the arteries and the associated stresses to the eye lenses. According to Organic Style magazine (April 2005 edition of my wife's subscription, so stop snickering!), "For maximum benefit, drink darker beers...which are brewed with higher concentrations of barley malt and have more than twice as many antioxidants as light beers." And here I thought I was drinking this stuff just for the taste...

Sounds good to me! Except for the misconception of the darker beer. They didn't research far enough to realize that darkness of the malt (degrees Lovibond?) is basically due to how long it was roasted. I guess they've never had a Belgian Tripel! What they should have said is "Stay away from the junk made with rice and corn."

In Reply To #2 Hmmm, the Bocks the Terrier makes are all pils malts, and some very light Munchen. The dark color comes from the decotion method used to mash. I bet those folks that wrote the article are hipp to the rip.
