UK bewer sales flat-CNN International report
General Beer Discussion by BRADPEAR
The Brits are drinking less beer, and consuming more wine and spirits. With the quality of English beer and ales...No serious, if this report is true. The reason is beer is considered old hat and low class. To fight this, the breweries are dumping tons of pounds into changing this image, and even going so far as smaller pint glasses for women, and more lagers. Another filler story on CNN? Not according to this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/1468932.stm I have seen it here in Deutschland as well. More and more young folks want stronger drinks, and of course cannabis kicks beers ass any day of the week, and there sure is a trend toward more and more of that here, YES! In Reply To #1 That sucks, but at least it seems like craft brews in the US are doing ok. Referring to Foam's recent post: "America's craft brewers sold 7 percent more beer in 2004 versus 2003, making craft beer the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. alcohol beverage industry, according to the Brewers Association, the Boulder, Colo.-based trade association for U.S. craft brewers."
In Reply To #1 Old hat and low class?...In the words of Steve Martin, WELL EXCUUUUU-UUUUUUZZZZEEE ME!.... What do they consider low class?....A pint of Boddingtons?....A stein of Paulaner?.....Honestly, I just don't get these Euros?....They get their own unified currency, and all of a sudden they become these ultra snobs, for more than one reason.....Please!
In Reply To #3 ??? the article is about the UK. There are no Euro there. The Uk is damn sure not Europa, yea the great northeast education showing again! The article reflects a marketing fact. The brewers in the UK are taking this serious. Craft sales in the US may be up, but they are a small part of the market. From what my friends in the industry tell me you got this situtation-young drinkers, aka alcho-pups. In most of the free world, you can drink bier and some mixed drinks at 16. That means you have an age group coming off soft drinks to "hard". Enter alcho-pop, for the alcho-pups. The idea is to get these young drinkers on a track other then bier early and often. As they mature, beer will indeed be old hat, and they will move on to consume vodka, whiskey, and tokillya. Its all alcohol, only the taste and method of comsumption change. In Reply To #4 I guess that "Northeast Education" stemms from being in a BLUE STATE, eh?......;-).... Also, maybe they should raise the legal drinking age in England to 18 like here in the US?...Alco-pops are just plain awful!.... This message was edited by Oiznop at 3/19/2005 12:28:08 PM.
