Sports MMA vs KILLER MMA...???

Non-Beer Discussion by KENDOSURF

[:)] Sure, we're all familiar with The Octagon...spectator mma, good show! I have some experience (not UFC level), but I don't have a definitive answer...Sports competition, or are these warriors truly Deadly? [?] [;)] Let me start with something I know. Belts, tips, badges, slashes, certificates. They have their place, although some senseis shun them altogether. I can agree. JeetKuneDo's adherents will often be among those who eschew such trappings. http://www.blackbeltmag.com/category/jeet-kune-do/ [^] I like the approach my own (main) instructor used. Never mind the crap, just use the 10 Basic plain colors of the Traditional Belts. They are: WHITE-YELLOW-GOLD-ORANGE-GREEN-BLUE-PURPLE-BROWN-RED-BLACK. I think it's OK to have a grading system, but one shouldn't get too caught up in it. Two schools can have very different standards...thus A's BROWN belt may be equivalent to B's ORANGE belt. There is no true standardization. [:(] [B)] I was taught "Killer Karate" style. That is, I learned how to quickly incapacitate an attacker, rather than how to perform in a tournament. Instead of Katas, only Fighting Sequences. Physical conditioning to the point, not for an attractive physique. How to maim or kill instead of how to score points with punches. Of course we didn't attack each other with full force assaults! Light contact with emphasis on technique...and then punch and kick the shield to develop power. All in all, it can be FUN! [8D] btw: I'm a GREEN belt. As I explained in another thread, my instructor moved away after getting me to that level. Last I knew, he was the lead singer for the Syracuse NY band GREY TIDE.

Jiu-Jitsu is grappling. I like this video. I learned mostly stand-up techniques with grappling secondary. [8)] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L1Cb-rDKQI Dan taught me that the most effective self defense technique is to RUN away, not WALK away. A wise sensei. [;)] As a Christian, I must try to keep cool always, and not be led by my emotions. That doesn't mean that I must be a doormat for anyone who wants to walk all over me, but I must use calm-intelligent-restraint. If I become the aggressor, then I'M THE BULLY !!! [:0][:0][:0] The biggest guy I ever stood down (without a fight) was a 7' 6" barroom bouncer who grabbed me from behind with a "come-along" (a cowardly, but non-injuring action). Hopefully the guy learned from our encounter. [:)] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_jiu-jitsu Is primarily a self defense art. Enuf said for now? [?]

[8)] Well, I guess this thread is an interesting enough sideline for Beerpals to read, but there's not much in the way of replies. I'll leave it to y'all...if posts appear, it may make for a DISCUSSION thread...?!? [:p]

[:0] WHOA! JASON SCOTT LEE, 20 year student of Jeet Kune Do, visits a Shao-Lin temple for two weeks of intensive training. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2I0mF2FoGY I've had quite a bit of martial arts schooling. Sports competitors like RONDA ROUSEY receive lots more, albeit focused on UFC mma. But these monks LIVE & BREATHE it. There's a six year old boy here, who most of us would not want to take on in hand-to-hand combat. Watch and be amazed! [;)]

[8)] As all too often happens, another interesting video got pulled. [:(] [^] But here's a working link! http://streams.cinezen.me/?title=secrets-of-shaolin-with-2012&host=Openload.co&link_id=60714&member=0 Add: jason-scott-lee- after with- in link above. Vid quality isn't as good as the first one, but it is watchable-OK. [:)]

Been awhile since I last followed Ronda Rousey's career. Discovered that she is now a scripted celebrity in the WWE (formerly WWF). Seems that after Holm & Nunes busted her up in consecutive matches, she lost interest in the UFC. https://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Ronda-Rousey-73073 https://www.wwe.com/superstars/ronda-rousey https://www.sportskeeda.com/wwe/is-wwe-real-or-fake

Nothing wrong with wanting to help the microbrewers, but many will be leery of providing personal info online, to an unknown source.
