Poll: Beer Trends
Poll Discussion by CLASH
Which beer trend in the last 5 years have you enjoyed the most? -Barrel Aging -American Black Ales/Black IPA -American Wild Ales/Brett Beers -Single Hop Experiments -Microbrewery Collaborations -New Imperial Styles (Wits/Ambers/Browns) -None of these, keep it old school! I will break down this poll option by option. But first I will explain to you I've been in the craft beer game for about 10 years now. When I first got started these options did not exist or were rare, at least in the US craft beer scene. -Barrel Aging .... Seemed to really take off in the mid 00s. The fad has died off but barrel aging is here to stay. -American Black Ales/Black IPA .... I won’t say Stone started it but the 11th Anniversary Stone sure did seem to launch it. I don't recall many from this style prior to about 2007. -American Wild Ales/Brett Beers .... No clue what started this but this trend is still raging. Yeasty/Brett U.S micro beers were not widely popular until a few years ago. -Single Hop Experiment .... This is taking a beer, usually an IPA, and tweaking hop profiles. See Yazoo who has done close to 100 of them! -Microbrewery Collaborations .... It is now commonplace for a micro or two or three to get in on one beer. This was not always the case. -New Imperial Styles (Wits/Ambers/Browns) .... Imperial Stouts have well been around forever. Imperial IPAs have been around since the 90s. I’m talking about Imperial Wits, Wheatwines, Imperial Reds, and Big Brown Ales etc. Ten years ago Arrogant Bastard was cutting edge now 100s or even 1000s are doing the same BIG BEER thing.

My favorite is probably the Wild Ale trend. Before that you were looking at some fairly pricey Belgian exports for that sour craving. My least favorite is the Black IPA deal. I think this might be on the down slope but in 2011 every damn brewery had one and IMHO alot of them sucked. It is really easy to mess up combining citrus and coffee/chocolate flavors. I usually don't put lemons in my coffee ya know [xx(]
Point taken, Clash. What I meant to say, was "In a Universe of consistently stellar polls, this poll is the bright and shining Sun." All your polls are well above average [:D]

It seems like I have seen a Black IPA at every brewpub I have visited in the last couple of years. We are in the middle of the trend, IMHO. Some have been better than others, but I have yet to try a great one. OJ and coffee flavors do NOT mix well.

Ha I wasn't being snarky, I didn't mean to came off that way. But there is a level of forum snarkiness lately so I could see it. I was being serious that I've really struggled with decent polls lately.

-Barrel Aging Now a mainstay in the marketplace. I like a well done BA beer, but it's starting to become overdone. -American Black Ales/Black IPA Only a small percentage are crafted well, New World Porter was the original hoppy dark masterpiece IMO. Not a style I typically like or seek out. -American Wild Ales/Brett Beers A lot of amazing stuff being made, great style to get cozy with. -Single Hop Experiments Nice idea, but seems it would work best at local brewpubs, not so much distributed in bottles. Unless you do what Sam Adams did a couple years ago with the mixed 12 pack. -Microbrewery Collaborations Not a fan of all the collaborations, prices on most offerings are not justified. -New Imperial Styles (Wits/Ambers/Browns) Taking classic styles out of the guidelines they work best within. More often than not a boozy contradiction, although a diamond in the rough is sometimes enjoyed. Why mess with what is tride and true, just more strong ales I suppose. -None of these, keep it old school! No way Jose, I'm still a fan of constant exploration and we'll always have tons of classics to fall back on.
-Barrel Aging Ontario is just catching on to this, and not being a fan of bourbon/whiskey/rum to begin with, none of the ones I've had have thrilled me. I want beer.....not bourbon, whiskey, or rum. -American Black Ales/Black IPA Surprisingly Rye Pale Ales are a bigger hit here than the Black IPA, and out of this list, this seems to be the one I enjoy most -American Wild Ales/Brett Beers These have been all the rage for the past year and half, and I can do without it. -Single Hop Experiments Only one microbrewery that I'm aware of is trying this in this area, and they are almost impossible to get (even Sassy couldn't walk all that way!) -Microbrewery Collaborations These too have been happening in abundance with a lot of brewers in the Toronto region in close proximity to one another. Some have been good, and some have been really really bad. -New Imperial Styles (Wits/Ambers/Browns) No more Imperial Reds/Ambers....please, I beg of these people to stop now! -None of these, keep it old school! This is what I picked. I would rather see people concentrate on making a great beer, irregardless of style, that I can enjoy. Otherwise I may as well wait for the La Trappe/Rochefort/Budweiser Imperial Quadrupel Dark Wit with Lime

Way to not read on Mitch! Anyways: I have also noticed coffee in more than just porter and stout lately. Drank Tree Brewings new Espresso IPA last night. It was pretty good. Had Mikkeller SpontaKoppi not long before that, bizarre but I love pushing the limits and creativity! Also had a couple Coffee Brown Ales... I want to see single coffee beers! (Though like Single Hop beers, they are less good when not tasted directly beside others, as they are really for interest more than quality beer.... (think Bordeaux vs. Merlot)) not that some aren't great, (Mikkeller Nelson) Beer Blending also seems to be a trend.... haven't had more than a couple, cant really comment.
