Poll: Aug 4th IPA day, your favorite style?
Poll Discussion by CLASH
Aug 4th is IPA day, what is your favorite IPA style? -English/East Coast IPA (maltier tamer version) -American/West Coast IPA (hops and more hops) -Imperial IPA (hoppy and high gravity) -American Black Ale/Black IPA (very dark version) -Belgian IPA (IPA with a Belgian twist) Although English and American IPA are not divided on BP, they are listed in the BJCP guidelines. They are sometimes referred to as East/West coast IPAs in the U.S. Belgian IPA is not recognized either, at least not yet, on BP. But alas what is your favorite?

Imperial, West Coast (close 2nd), Belgian, Black, English...but I like em all.
Since I had to choose I went with the American/West Coast option. HOWEVER...... the English/East Coast option is totally bunk, they should have been completely separate options. I do like a bone dry West coast IPA, but overall my preference is for the Mid-West & East Coast American varieties that have a bit more malt backbone. Of course I generally prefer a well made American Pale Ale over an IPA 7 times out of 10 so this only makes absolutely perfect sense.

Yeah I went back and forth on this. East Coast is getting less like the English these days but it seems people still have a habit of referring to darker, maltier IPAs as East Coast so I went with it. This is not a scientific poll ya know [:D] But I am open to criticism because it is usually well deserved.

I had a nice New Holland Mad Hatter for IPA Day. http://twitpic.com/612uml I am a fan of hops, but I do think some of the Imperial IPAs are over the top. I mean, there is the beer you pick to win the Lupulin Slam, and then there is the beer you pick to drink. Know what I mean?
I don't have a beef with the English / East Coast category. There's clearly a difference between English and American IPAs, but "American IPA" is too broad. West Coast varieties do tend to be ultra hoppy often featuring the grapefruitalicious Cascades. This does not mean East Coast IPAs are wimpy. As an East Coast guy, let me just casually remind everyone that the East Coast brewers won the 1st Annual Lupulin Slam with the help of Sammy Calagione's invention, Randall the Enamel Animal. We have the technology...
