I cannot think of a better excuse for Twitter than beer exploration. It provides nearly instantaneous feedback, almost like you are chatting with 1000s. It is highly searchable, for example, I can write a quick search and find the latest # tap list @ Churchkey. When I go to Churchkey and get the last chalice of De Dolle Stille Nicht (http://www.beerpal.com/De-Dolle-Stille-Nacht-Beer/2934/), I can upload a Twitpic picture and a gloating message that the keg just kicked. I can also tour through my past Tweets and it's a bit like a journal or logbook. Kinda cool. I used to post a lot of beer-related stuff on Facebook, but then I realized that some of my friends and family (including under-aged youth) were possibly getting the wrong impression about Uncle Foam. Like anything else, there is a downside to Twitter. Personally, I do not care for the inane play-by-play some people post on Twitter. "I h8 my alarm clock >:(" "mmmm...bacon :-)" "I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go! /:( " "Can I pour the coffee directly into my brain?" "I <3 bubes (o)(o)." etc. In a perfect world, all people would have actual human friends and no reason to share via a phone. But, I digress.

Agree with you Foam; my tweets are more beer-heavy than my Facebook for the same reasons. Breweries/brewpubs/beer bars on Twitter will update and post things that never make their websites. Easy to inform your followers of special releases and such. Can be used productively.[:)] Not hip to the "I'm stuck in traffic" posts.[:(!][V]

As one who doesn't use twitter or facebook, I hate it when a brewery (and this happens too often) has a website and never updates a damn thing...but they have twitter feeds and facebook updates daily. what about those of us who don't use those? it's just lazy (and pointless) to have a website with no/out of date/inaccurate info. why bother with a site then?

Breweries that have an in-house information officer / media director will obviously try to cover all the outlets and keep everything current and fresh. Lacking sufficient manpower for public affairs, there are two reasons why a Brewer might spend more time on Twitter / Facebook than a traditional website. One, there is an urgency associated with new media. Twitter / Facebook are like a conversation that is spoken and used in the moment. No one goes back over last week's Tweets--it's irrelevant. Websites are like a book that is written and put on the shelf for reference. Maybe brewers get caught up in the moment. Two, Twitter skews young. Brewers may be courting the younger crowd. (No offense intended!) After all, a 20-something that becomes a loyal customer is more valuable than a 40-something one. I am 40-something (40-10, to be exact). The younger crowd may have less disposable income, but basically, even 20-somethings can afford beer and the key thing for brewers is being seen as a brand of choice among the customers who do a lot of free advertising for you.

you did make good points, but why bother, say, putting a "what's on tap" on your website, and never updating it. one local example...silver Peak...3 locations, all of which have a different beer menu at any given time...one "WOT" on the site. even then, it hadn't been updated for more than 6 months until recently when someone pulled their head out of their keester and made the website relevant again. websites are easy to change/update. if they are treated like a finished product, why bother? I'm a librarian. If we didn't update our reference materials (hard copies, websites, databases...we'd go out of business. you can't just sit on old reference material if it's become incorrect. THAT's lazy.

I've pretty much given up on paying attention to any draft lists, whether on facebook or websites. I've look at them for 3 different places in the last month and even ones that were updated the day before were still incorrect the next day. All it did was piss me off after looking forward to a particular beer that probably kicked within 24 hours of my arrival. And as far as Twitter goes, I never gave it a 2nd look after seeing how much useless jabber there is as Foamdome summarized lol. I don't mind Facebook because at least I can play some of the games and I can see a lot of other interesting info about old friends. I do pay attention to a couple local breweries on FB just to watch for special events coming up, which is sometimes useful.

the fargingbastige6 is now on twitter: @CurtisFaulk Plus most breweries are on Twitter now, updating frequently. Good to follow them if only for beer release news or specials. Several BeerPals tweet often also.

Ya beat me to it, Lou... I was reading the thread. I am on twitter and have found that by following certain organizations/outlets, a lot of what may interest me, finds me rather than me finding it. Also, I can post stuff that I find interesting as a) a quasi-journal as Foam suggests and b) for others who may (one day) follow what I'm up to. Facebook seemed more a PITA than twitter - to me.
