What Beers Would James Bond Drink???
General Beer Discussion by OIZNOP
I am thinking of making this a story idea for yet another article for the site....Don't get me wrong, I realize that agent 007 is basically a martini drinker (shaken, not stirred) but if there were no martini's (or other non beer bevs) available, what would our cinema hero low these last 42 years imbibe??.....here are my thoughts broken down by movie:
Dr. No: Story lined in Jamaica: Red Stripe...Ugh, something tells me Mr. Bond would spit this one out!
From Russia With Love: Baltika or Aldaris Porter....
Goldfinger....Not sure, it was story lined in Kentucky, so I don't know of any Kentucky brews...
Thunderball: Again, story lined in Caribbean....Would 007 trade a tropical cocktail for a bottle of Caribe???
You Only Live Twice: Japan....Definitly Sapporo or Asahi Black...However in the movie, he turns down a martini for a sake...
On Her Majesty's Secret Service: Story lined in Switzerland, I would have to guess Samiclaus...
Diamonds Are Forever: Story lined in Vegas with a brief stop in Amsterdam...Definitly Heinekin and Budweiser (I am afraid)....
Live and Let Die: Filmed in NY, New Orleans and the Caribbean...Take you're pick here, 007....If I could remember the name of that New Orleans brew, I would say that, but I forget what it is...
The Man With The Golden Gun: Hong Kong and Bangkok...I am not familiar with any beers from this part of the world...are they any good???
The Spy Who Loved Me: Egypt, & Italy....For sure Moretti La Rossa, but in Egypt, 007 would be hard pressed to find any alcohol!..However, 007 is seen ordering a martini at a bar while his russian operative coutnerpart, agent XXX has a Bacardi and Coke....Hmmmm!
Moonraker: Italy, and Rio De Janiero: again Moretti for Italia, South American beers, not sure of any...
For Your Eyes Only: Greece...I am not aware of any good Greek beers...I hope the Ouzo supply doesn't run out!
Octopussy: India ....Help!....Actually, I take that back...I forgot about Lion Stout from Sri Lanka....I guess it could be considered the local brew in that region!
A View to a Kill: Paris & San Francisco....Without question, one of the beers from Anchor Brewing...as for France, Belzibuth???
The Living Daylights: Czechoslovakia (b-4 the split) & Morocco ...Oh wow, send Mr. Bond a Budvar or a Pilsner Urquell...Not sure of Morocco though....
Licensed to Kill: The Bahamas & Florida.....Oh boy!....A glass of pizz water please!
Goldeneye: St. Petersburg Russia: See From Russia With Love....
Tomorrow Never Dies: Germany (ah, now we are getting somewhere), Vietnam (well there goes that idea!)....
The World Is Not Enough: Azerbaijan, Turkey....Head Shaking, haven't a clue...
Die Another Day: Iceland & Cuba.....AAAAAUUUUGGGGHHH!!!!!
There you have it beer pals, help fill in the blanks!...remember, the only alcohol available for our hero is beer in each of these exotic locals from his movies....What do you think?...Of course when Mr. Bond is home in London, well then the beer choices are just plain endless!....No problem there.....Buy me a pint!

Good Idea! In New Orleans he may go with Dixie Blackened Voodoo. I sort of see him as being very brand loyal to an English brand like Tetley. That is if he could get it. or maybe Carlsburg. Since many of the places he goes used to be colonies He maybe able to find British brews.
Great concept, Oiz! This'll be a fun post, and I look forward to another great article. There are a couple brewpubs and micros in Kentucky. Bluegrass Brewing in Louisville is quite well known. Their Bearded Pat's Barley Wine is great (Gold @ GABF, 1997). Would give Rogue's Old Crusty a good chase. Unfortunately, I just can't picture a suave way for James to ask his bartender for a Bearded Pat. Upstate Dave is right on with his Narlins suggestion: Dixie Blackened Voodoo. It's got that mojo thang working. Mojo and the House of the Rising Sun all in one... Greece is a problem. However, yet another interesting factoid gleaned from BeerPals: I learned that Amstel is actually brewed in Greece. Would that work? Everyone thinks of Amstel as Dutch. Hmmm, maybe too confusing... Oriental Brewery's eponymous and ubiquitous OB is the default choice for Southeast Asia. Let's hope someone comes up with something better! From France comes Trois Monts. I'm sure James would appreciate a beer whose very name suggests three mounts. As for Turkey, there's always Efes (as in Ephesus, or Ephesians). There's a reason Turkey is not well known for beer. It's called Efes.

THAT'S IT!!!...DIXIE BLACKENED VOODOO!....I remember having it a very long time ago, but I could not remember the name!.....Thanks to you both!.....I seem to remember Carlsburg being subtlely advertised in one of the Bond movies....I think it was the Living Daylights!.....As for Greece, etc., I am gonna have to do some research!.....To the library!......

In Reply To #1 Kingfisher is another option for a beer from India. If James was inclined or had to drink beer in India I would hope that her majesty would keep him well stocked with a good IPA from the mother country. Seems like beer would travel better than a cocktail shaker.

True, but India is not a colony anymore, and hasn't been since 1948 (???...Not sure on that date)...However, that should stop 007 from bringing his own IPA to India, like her majesty's troops used to...

In Reply To #1 What ales you man? James drinks Boodles gin, have not you ever herd "in the evening the Englishman reaches for the Gin bottle and thinks of London"? No, then consider this: If the ole boy was a ale drinker he would spend too much time taking a piss and being hung over to be any service to Her Royal Highness. Ale indeed!
