General Beer Discussion by FLASHPRO
It looks like I might be going to Brussels this month! A short weekend trip from Ireland since the plane tickets are so cheap. It's taking forever to plan because my internet access is so limited, but I plan on goign to the Cantillon Brewery and a couple huge beer bars. Depending on train access and hotel prices I might try another Belgian city as well, but I only have from late friday night to sunday evening. Sorry I haven't been active on the site lately, nor have the ability to fix problems on the site. We're doing 50 hours a week now [xx(] and I still have no FTP access

Everyone's heard of "hand tossed pizza." It just means the pizza dough is tossed by hand. Antwerp really puts the "hand" in hand tossed! The name Antwerp means hand tossed, but not tossed by hand. Antwerp literally means hand, tossed--as in, "I cut the mean giant's hand off and tossed it into the river." This bit of local history gives new significance to the popular Antwerpen brew, Palm. That said, were I in your shoes, I'd invest 100% of the limited time in Brussels. Why not put the time and money you would commit to transportation into a deeper appreciation of NATO's capital? Don't worry, you can find Palm and DeKonnick in Brussels, too!

I'm at work here on a Saturday so at least it's a little more quiet and i can sneak in more internet time [:D] I booked a hotel in Brussels that's about 1.25 miles from Cantillon and the Delirium Cafe (2000+ bottles). A guy at work said he lived in Brugges for a little while and that it's a neat place to visit. He told us how to get there via train, but i'm not sure if I'll be up to that. Like you guys said, this is a very short trip and I'd rather not spend more time in transportation that I have to.
On a side note, Delirium is opening two more cafe's... one of which will be in Pittsburgh, PA. I hope they keep with their 2000+ selection in the States.

You can definitely occupy your time in Brussels. Cantillon is a must as is Delirium Cafe but don't forget about Bier Circus. Also, if you want beer to bring back, go see Nasser at Beer Mania. Antwerp and Brugge are great beer cities. If you have the time I'd suggest both. I think Brugge is more "quaint" while Antwerp packs a good punch. Check this website out for suggestions: http://users.pandora.be/filip.geerts/beerpubmap2.htm Filip has all the spots here. Mike

Compromise. Town of Mechelen is halfway between Bruxelles and Antwerp. It is also where Gouden Carolus d'Or is brewed. http://www.eurotravelling.net/belgium/mechelen/mechelen_culture.htm For places to go in the area, check out Filip Geerts' site (link provided by the one and only Beer_God). http://users.pandora.be/filip.geerts/beerpubmap2.htm Places such as this: Den Stillen Genieter Nauwstraat 9 2800 Mechelen Tel: 015 21 95 04 Number of beers: 350
I already looked into Bier Circus but for some reason it's closed on weekends! [V] Also, I don't think I mentioned it before, but I'm not going alone and therefore can't make this a 48 hour beer tour. My coworker drinks only 4.80 euro Coors Light at the pubs here [B)] and I feel lucky enough to get Cantillon Brewery and Delirium Cafe out of this trip. The funny thing is I recently found out that she went to Monk's Cafe dozens of times and never got into any other beer. Oh well, it's hard to knock some sense into some women. At first I was thinking I could try some sort of fruity beer, but I forgot that she hates fruit. She won't even drink fruit juice. The other day she was saying that maybe she needs to see a hypnotist to cure her fear of fruit haha. This will be some trip.

[:D][}:)] unfortunatley, it's very rare to meet a girl with beer knowledge, as most of them just assume that "all beer tastes the same", and most of the time they don't even drink beer anyway, they drink these ridiculous vodka coolers, and then not to enjoy the taste, but to get "wasted". at least this is what i've perceived.

Not anymore! They've moved to a new location and are open on weekends now - 6pm to midnight, if I'm not mistaken. http://www.infobruxelles.com/bier-circus/Pages-siteAg/accueilAg.html Open weekends according to their site. Mike
